AIBU to end things over his constant pointless lies?

Been seeing someone for a few months and I’ve now caught him out on at least 3 stupid lies.

  1. he told me he had a dog, a husky called Bear. He would talk about this dog almost daily “I took Bear to the beach today” “just been watching tv with bear” “bear has vets tonight at 4pm” etc. first time I went to his house there were no signs of a dog at all so I said “where is bear?” He looked confused, then panicked and then said “oh he died unfortunately” so I said “when?? Because late last night you said you were walking him early this morning …”. He said he died last night so I said “and you never mentioned it? Come on …” so he admitted he didn’t have a dog but bear did exist, it’s his sisters dog. This also turned out to be a lie.
  2. He told me he had joined the Conservative Party and was considering running as a councillor. This turned out to be a complete lie.
  3. he told me today that he had gone to see the Monet exhibition in the local art gallery. Yet tonight he was on the phone and I heard him confirm with his boss that he had worked a full day today starting at 9am and finishing at 5. Afterwards I said “thought you were at art gallery today?” So he stumbled on his words and said “oh - no - well yes I was but that was yesterday, I got my days mixed up” he literally called me at 2pm saying he had just left the art gallery!! I was meant to be staying at his house tonight but I’ve come home telling him I can’t be doing with the constant stupid lies. AIBU

Do you really need to ask?

blackhorsesxx · 16/08/2026 07:52

Run for the hills

HexInductionHour · 16/08/2026 07:54

@Wilnis7 excellent 🤣🤣🤣

I think it becomes a habit after a while and they don't even think about why they are doing it. I think it usually comes from feeling insecure or inadequate, but it can also be anxiety based. My exh was a bit like this, but his lies were less ridiculous. He had lots of childhood trauma and spent a lot of his childhood let down by his parents and a lot of time by himself making up fantasies that eventually became real in his head. That then just continued as he became an adult. A lot of his lies were sort of half-truths, and all of them seemed pointless. He spent the first 8-9 months of our relationship lying about his job for example. He worked for the company he said he worked for, but he didn't have the role he told me he had.

Either way, sharing your life with someone who lies that much is completely pointless as you don't know who you are actually with. They become this false person and without trust there is nothing of value in a relationship.

It's all very sad really....if it's trauma based.
I guess most "off" behaviour is tbh.....

CruCru · 16/08/2026 07:55

This sounds exhausting. The risk is that you repeat his stories to other people (“Oh yes, Paul saw that exhibition, he really liked it”) because they aren’t outlandish enough for you to doubt.

jeaux90 · 16/08/2026 08:45

Finish it. Trust me, sociopaths are not good to have a life with.

PinkyFlamingo · 16/08/2026 08:49

What on earth does he say when you catch him out ?

ThatLilacTiger · 16/08/2026 08:58

I was good friends with a girl like this when I was younger and ended up confronting her with her lies and offering to help her stop. She doubled down so I fucked her off. Lying like this is absolutely pathetic and makes my skin crawl. I'd honestly judge you if you didn't break up.

Spiffingdarling88 · 16/08/2026 01:04

🙄 God forbid. Seriously, something wrong with people, by that, I mean you.

Thanks! 🙄 what a lovely comment!

I was meant to be light hearted, as indicated by the “but seriously” part which you clearly missed.

As it happens I would struggle to be in a relationship where our values differed a great deal, but in this case I’d say that’s the least of OP’s worries.

scatterolight · 16/08/2026 09:08

Lying like this is a huge red flag for a personality disorder of some kind. Dump and do not look back. Run like the wind. He will ruin your life if you continue.

Porkpieandmustard · 16/08/2026 09:15

I had a relationship with someone like this.
(Although the dog story is totally bonkers!).

I would end the relationship (& wish I’d ended mine sooner).

I ended up not believing anything and that’s not a good foundation for a relationship!

And of course, inevitably, he was unfaithful, which is what made me leave in the end.

Justanopinionnothingmore · 16/08/2026 09:18

Erm they are not stupid lies. They are big whoppers that a lot of energy was given to. Dump.

Myli1 · 16/08/2026 09:26

I’d have immediately binned him off at the words “Conservative Party”, but nonetheless all of these lies point to a fantasist who is never going to form a worthwhile and cohesive relationship.

momager22 · 16/08/2026 10:01

What a pathetic weirdo. He has some serious issues. Run.

waitinginwonderland · 16/08/2026 10:09

Throw him back in the sea please! Compulsive liars are irritating at best and dangerous at worst, not worth your time.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 16/08/2026 10:32

BitOutOfPractice · 15/08/2026 23:24

Well for me he was dumped at “conservative party” but seriously wow, he sounds quite ill I’d say.

😂Same

With all the toxicity with politics, it's really not funny. Especially as it seems it's always targeting the right. It's about time these sorts of comments are called out.

CelestialGazer · 15/08/2026 23:27

Tell him you can’t Bear to be with someone who is at best an eccentric liar and at worst a deluded fantasist, so you are ending it now before you waste any Monet on him.

And then block…

Superb 👏
Willing to bet a big clock he won't get it though.

Op, he's below you and that's one thing he does know.
Get rid already.

Clydebuilt · 16/08/2026 11:40

What are you unsure about?

LilWoosmum82 · 16/08/2026 17:47

Run.

ThatWasAFunDay · 16/08/2026 17:48

Why are you even questioning this? He is dishonest and also really stupid.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/08/2026 17:53

SometimesThingsHappen · 16/08/2026 02:00

Bravo 🤣🤣🤣! OP, You must include that you are quite conservative in who you share your life with! 😂

I thought the 'deluded fantasist' covered the 'becoming a Conservative councillor' part quite nicely....

Mooma1961 · 16/08/2026 18:07

Reader.... I married him.
Been in the army/SAS....NO
Former girlfriend was expecting his baby, fell from a horse and dies....NO, no girlfriend, no baby...no horse
Father cut his leg off with a chainsaw....NO
And so on
Please do what I didn't....RUN, RUN, RUN

jdb9803 · 16/08/2026 18:09

I don't get the point of the lies - would you care either way if he has a dog or has seen a Monet exhibition? He gains nothing - can only imagine the lies when there is something in it for him

Thisismyfinesthour · 16/08/2026 18:11

Let's be frank here, do you really need to ask if you're bu to dump him?
Why would anyone say he's telling porkies but hey never mind I'm sure he's a good person really.
You deserve so much better OP.
