AIBU to discuss A level success without private school spending?

Absorbthecost · Today 10:32

Parents/carers who have not spent a penny on Educating their children and they have just received great A level results.

The sacrifices made all the struggle,

I’m interested to discuss families where the child has succeeded without need for private school

https://www.gbnews.com/money/private-school-fees-soar-vat

https://www.ft.com/content/091b214d-231b-414a-8f3e-9ef9fc021926?syn-25a6b1a6=1

Those who did pay,

presumably to secure great results at A level

The same kids off to Uni, placements easier to secure as less international competition. Uni the playing field evens.

And now time to pay for Uni,

https://inews.co.uk/news/education/university-tuition-fees-11000-2030-4705197?srsltid=AfmBOorss52PSHD6xJzisWMdeNxcXDen3IrCGS49nnGH1ZyDnmvTOh_k

A child who did outstanding (without spending a penny) the same result as a family who spent £250k + The above article is a low estimation for a selective U.K. day/ boarding.

The kids holding the same result off to the same Uni, How are families feeling!?…. Did you save to help towards the Uni Fees/accomodation.

Private school fees soar to £216,000 amid VAT raid

A private day school education from reception to A-levels now costs an average of £216,189

I have no idea what you’re asking here. Many international wealthy families still do send their kids to UK independent schools, I agree the numbers have declined and would attribute that to rising costs here, rising hostilities to immigrants here, more disruptions to international travel etc rather than a perceived drop in grades if that’s what you’re getting at?

They’re wealthy it’s not about the money. It’s the below par provision and constant emails explaining “efficiencies” Low budget.

The thought is a self driven, self motivated, resourceful child receiving the exact grade off to the same uni to mingle with the same people must today be feeling like they’ve won the lottery!

Hahaha what rubbish 😂

KarcherK5 · Today 11:39

@GrillaMilla varies hugely, many private schools are academically selective, many are not. But they will all take references from previous schools/speak to the pupil (or parents if very young) to try to gauge how their behaviour will be, and they will all simply ask students to leave if they are too disruptive. The behaviour in private schools is better largely because any kids with behavioural issues aren’t allowed to stay and keep disrupting everybody else, it’s a thousand times easier for the school than it would be for a state school to permanently exclude somebody.

Why are you still paying for something that is tje biggest waste of money?

All the smart families are holding all the top spots at the top state/ grammar schools! Tough times.

If you think that people send their kids to PS purely for the A levels, then you have no experience or knowledge of PS and whey people choose it.

No - your post is actually pretty nasty and based in ignorance about the reasons why people opt for private schools. It is not about buying higher exam grades than state school children - but about ensuring their individual children (who may be ASD, ADHD, suffer anxiety, may have been bullied, or NT but simply cope better in smaller class sizes etc) - have an EQUAL chance of achieving their potential as the ‘self driven self-motivated, resourceful child’ in most generally good state school settings. It’s not about mixing with the hoi palloi or social advantages - it’s about parental choice to support your children to the best of your ability IF you can find the money to do so.

'self driven, self motivated, resourceful child'

My child is all those things and goes to PS.

There will always be some families who decide they don’t like the school they chose and decide to move - that happens in state sector as well as private.

You seem very angry/upset about your school not living up to your expectations, and that’s a shame but it’s really not a justification to attack the whole sector.

snurtifier · Today 11:41

IME a lot of kids who are privately educated up to 16 then go to stage sixth form colleges anyway.

BellesAndGraces · Today 11:41

Absorbthecost · Today 10:51

So it’s Daycare and Uber One.

= £250k per child.

Unless you’re paying for the daycare and Uber One yourself, what’s it to you? Why the chip on your shoulder?

If you really wanted to send your own kids to a private school and couldn’t afford it, you should have looked at bursaries, grants and scholarships. Many selective schools will find a way to take on a bright child where finances are the only barrier.

Correct - the issues that drive people to private are mostly removed by Sixth form

I went to a state school and most of the children on my uni course went to private school. Yes, I ‘mingled’ with them and am still close friends ten years later but I didn’t have the same opportunities they had through their connections. They had placements through friends parents or grad jobs that weren’t advertised.

My DD did her first few years at a private school before we moved and liked the local village school. The friends she made in that short time have afforded her great opportunities, my husband got connected jobs from fellow parents that weren’t advertised. As somebody from a working class family who now has a highly paid career, I can see that clever children will achieve everywhere but the opportunities aren’t the same.

Because they believe their kids would mingle with “better kids”

ironically the wealthy international students are looking to the U.K. independent families and don’t want their kids to mingle with them.

@Absorbthecost the political climate isn’t attractive in the UK at the moment.
It’s not “constant e-mails” begging for money.

My son went to state primary and we changed to private for secondary. Not for better teachers but to avoid all the social conflicts that arise when many, not all!, children are neglected and not told that school is important + all immigrants who barely know English and that the teachers have to take into consideration. My friend teaches in state and she says that half of her lessons are spent on dealing with anti social behaviour. In my kid's school it wouldn't be tolerated- they would be told to leave if disruptive.

Didn’t Charles go Oxford?

Cambridge, but using the very tiny example of the heirs to the throne isn't really proving any points. Every exception will be made for them, and it isn't that they pay their way in. They just get in because it's THEM.
Now, if universities were letting in underperforming international-fee-paying students, that would be noteworthy.
Prince William will have paid the same fees as everyone else (£1000 a year back then, I think).

newbeggins · Today 11:44

You don’t necessarily get great grades at private school. Lots of people use them for reasons such as SEND, previous bullying etc

ThisDandyWriter · Today 11:45

Absorbthecost · Today 10:45

But everything you mention are all being cut due to appalling financial mismanagement and misappropriation of “bursary” funds.

So in reality you’re paying for nothing.

Any child can join an external club. With a greater guarantee that true talent will be nurtured and staff will be available (not cancelled as teachers don’t want to work/cover) It seems clear increasingly private school is nothing more than Day Care.

You are very odd, OP.

You make these huge assumptions and generalisations and each post makes it more obvious that you don't know what you are talking about.

Where did you read that these things are being cut? Not at either of my schools, so they clearly didn't get the memo.

Yes I am still paying. It is the biggest waste of money I have ever experienced. I congratulate the children who have swerved this ‘situation’ to me private school is Day care.

Ah, I see now. You made a shit choice for your kids and thought you’d piss in other people’s cornflakes to make yourself feel better. I don’t know you and even I’m disappointed in you.

lovingthebeachlife · Today 11:46

GrillaMilla · Today 11:37

Is there an entrance exam for private??
Or do they take anyone who can pay? Just curious!

Depends on the school but many parents perpetuate the myth that privates schools are super selective. Very very few are.

My DS got AAA at a very very low achieving state 6th form…only a few out of the whole year even applied to University. The battles he had to face to even get accepted into Uni were huge, his school didn’t predict A ever as nobody ever achieves them. So he got rejected initially as grade requirements were A*AA. He had no teacher for 1 subject for the whole of Y13 so he had to teach himself the whole Y13 content as well as revise his other subjects. Psychology if anyone is interested because no psychology teacher wanted to work in such a shit school.

He ended up taking a Gap Year and reapplying with grades in hand to his 1st choice Uni and he’s now going into his 3rd year. I would say 75% of his friends went to either a private or a grammar school and had a completely different 6th form experience than him

Especially in this climate!

We all need to get real, I can admit it.

It’s fancy Day care. The provision has been cut to the bone. Edging towards just plain Day care.

Ok - so your kids got shit A level results then!!!!

I feel really sorry for them. I hope they never read this thread because it would be heartbreaking for them that they would feel that they'd let you know and that you felt like you'd wasted all your money.

How sad that you put so much emphasis on results.

I'm predicating a 'why are my children NC with me' in a few years.
