I admit I don’t quite get it, over the years I’ve opened a window or turned when doing the washing or been driving and been momentarily ‘argh’ at the sun straight in my bloody eyes. Why is catching an eclipse for a second different? (And I just had my vision check up so no those moments in the car/garden had no effect). Not that I would look at one but I don’t get why it’s terrible when we naturally get the sun in our eyes by mistake all the time?

There is no difference people on this thread are dramatic

Believe me or don't, the first damage can show up in 12-24 hours but it takes several weeks for the initially I flammed photoreceptors cells to subside and the true vision loss to show up. The last one I saw was 6 weeks after the day of damage almost to the day when it was picked up. If you have an OCT scan now it'll show up but the full loss of the photoreceptor cells and the blind spot in your vision progresses for weeks.

So I had a look on Vision Express website, as that’s who I went to, and their advanced test (which is what I had) does include an OCT scan. The optician said all was fine. Do you recommend I go back in a month or so to have another one, or is it futile if damage is already done?

Why? If there are no symptoms and nothing you can do about it?

And if it can happen months later, how can you know it was that particular day that caused the damage?

When the sun is shaded out by the moon and because of the novelty of the eclipse people tend to look for longer and it takes very little time for the rays to damage your retina. The damage is permanent and it takes time for the effects to become clear. There were many well qualified people explaining this in the news media.

If you think you know better and want to gamble with your vision go for it.

It wasn't a total eclipse you couldn't look at it more then a second as the sun is the sun. There was no difference between looking at that and opening your blinds or when your driving sometimes you look at the sun.

I'm guessing you didn't take a peek then. If you did, you'd have seen that it was just as difficult to look at as the sun normally. People would be struggling to do more than glimpses.

Well 65% of people agreed with me. And the people who haven't have spent the whole thread name calling and being nasty. I'm happy I'm on the side I'm on with this one. The 35% have shown their nastiness and immaturity throughout.

Somehow, I don't think anyone was duped into looking at an eclipse that had already occured...
