to think that "eating fish and chips" is just lunch/dinner, not a holiday activity?!

Seen this on a few threads lately, and when I asked a couple of years ago about ideas of what to do in the evening on hols in the UK, this was the line trotted out most! "Walk along the promenade eating fish and chips". For a start I hate eating when walking, its messy and inconvenient and secondly, what about the other 6 evenings in a week or are we meant to do it every single night?

In most places these days you can't "eat fish and chips on the front" anyway because you get mugged by fucking sea gulls!

YABU as fish and chips always taste a million times better by the sea. However, I agree on eating and walking.

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 16:32

It's a holiday thing here. By the sea.

Cappuccino5 · Yesterday 16:34

Depends where you live. We live 15 mins from the sea so it’s just a standard quick takeaway to grab on the way home for us. If you’re far inland then the fish quality is awful - I understand why they like to make an occasion of it!

Flamingojune · Yesterday 16:35

Best place to eat them is by the sea to the sound of seagulls and the waves

SummitWrong · Yesterday 16:35

YABU. Its not something that a lot of people would routinely eat, and and is a very traditional sea side accompaniment. The only time we have it is on holiday
I also have a specific dietary requirement that isnt catered for in many fish and chip shops, so I make a point of looking out for somewhere suitable when we do travel elsewhere. #Fish in Edinburgh was so good we ate there 2 nights on the trot and I still dream of eating there again 🤤

Edit to add: the seagulls here hunt in packs so I wouldnt be eating it outside, but getting on the way back from a beach trip? Absolutely.

It’s not something I do when not by the sea, but it’s not exactly an “experience “

sittingonabeach · Yesterday 16:38

Sitting by the sea eating fish and chips is great (as long as you can keep the seagulls at bay)

Boomer55 · Yesterday 16:40

I’d never eat walking along, but good fish and chips, in a seaside venue, in a restaurant, is hard to beat. 👍

MickyMoonshine · Yesterday 16:43

It’s one of the things you do when you go on holiday to the seaside. I’m pretty sure it’s not the only thing they’re doing!

shhblackbag · Yesterday 16:44

It is for me, they don't know how to make it properly where I live.

In a restaurant, fine. Its the "sitting by the sea" bit, as if it is somehow an "experience" as a pp said!

The odd time we have had fish and chips on holiday it has been so bloody expensive, I would rather pay a wee bit more for a restaurant! Were we go on holiday its £20 for a small fish and chips, fuck off am I paying that!

Come now, use your imagination:

Walk along prom eating fish and chips.
Sit by sea eating fish and chips.
Walk along prom eating just chips.
Sit by sea eating just chips.
Walk along prom eating only fish.
Sit by sea eating only fish.

And live it up on the final day (if a week's holiday) by sitting in your car, peering through the rain-drenched windscreen, eating sausage in batter and chips.

Monty36 · Yesterday 16:45

You haven’t lived OP.
Fish and chips by the seaside are a requirement. You can sit on a harbour wall. Or in a fish restaurant.
And eating them on a holiday destination is a fun thing to do. The sea air, the sound of waves. Lovely.

Yetone · Yesterday 16:46

To have good fish and chips you have to be where they catch fish, just not any place by the sea.

Yes this, they taste so much better by the sea although we find a bench, it also creates lovely memory.

We’ve just spent a week in uk seaside town. In addition to getting fish and chips our evening activities included crabbing, games and a picnic on the beach, mooching about the shops, drinks and card games in various pubs and a couple of nice meals out.
But getting fish and chips was one of our planned activities.

alexdgr8 · Yesterday 16:48

You sound a bit grumpy OP

susiedaisy1912 · Yesterday 16:50

I’m 55 years old and having fish n chips when on our annual holiday was a real treat. My parents didn’t have the money for it any other time of the year. So I remember it being a special part of being by the seaside.

I thought virtually everyone in the UK ate fish and chips (obviously not vegans, vegetarians etc) but there was a thread yesterday where the OP's brother was saying no to a family birthday meal at a fish restaurant because his extremely fussy children wouldn't be able to eat anything except chips, even though traditional fish and chips was one of the main courses on offer. Lots of people responded as if this was perfectly reasonable and said they hate fish in all its forms and would never go to a fish restaurant. I was surprised.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · Yesterday 16:53

I had fish and chips at the seaside on Thursday, cost £11, seagulls didn't bother me.
I can't eat and walk though.

Sirzy · Yesterday 16:53

Fish and chips by the sea is just that bit nicer than sat at home!

We did a day out last week to a seaside town 20 mins down the road - we sat outside in the sun eating them and then had a walk along the front with an ice cream. A simple thing but lovely!

Any1ForTennis · Yesterday 16:53

I love my holiday fish and chips but prefer to 'sit in' and not be attacked by gulls. Also means I can have a nice pot of tea 😀.

I don’t eat fish (or any seafood) so my seaside ‘fish and chips’ is actually chips and mushy peas.

T8g · Yesterday 16:54

It's definitely an "event" for us, although I'd prefer to sit on a bench rather than walk, but I doubt anyone meant to do it every day of your holiday, but for a fun event to do on one of the days, yes, absolutely.

concertinacornflake · Yesterday 16:55

Why does life have to be full of 'experiences'? Can't life just be life, hopefully with pleasant days and happy times?

Eating chips by the sea is a lovely thing to do, followed by a walk, maybe an ice cream.
