Seen this on a few threads lately, and when I asked a couple of years ago about ideas of what to do in the evening on hols in the UK, this was the line trotted out most! "Walk along the promenade eating fish and chips". For a start I hate eating when walking, its messy and inconvenient and secondly, what about the other 6 evenings in a week or are we meant to do it every single night?

In most places these days you can't "eat fish and chips on the front" anyway because you get mugged by fucking sea gulls!

You dont eat it while walking! You sit on the beach or on a bench.

You don't have to walk, you can find a bench and eat them.
Also doesn't have to be fish n chips, can be a nice pasty instead 😋.

I’d skip the walking - eating a fish supper by the sea side is magic

As adults alone I’d probably find eating fish and chips by the sea enjoyable - with our kids I think I’d rather stab myself in the eye with the little forks you get from the chippy!!

On a serious note though - best fish and chips I’ve ever had has been in a little ‘greasy spoon’ style chippy in Blackpool - so maybe there is something to be said about the quality of the fish being better at a chippy near to the sea

It only takes 30 minutes if you just shovel it down and leave - the whole point is to sit and enjoy it for a while. Then you can get an ice-cream afterwards and eat it on the way back to the car.

Trying not to get attacked by seagulls is what makes it a fun activity

I think being able to get pleasure from the relatively mundane, simple things in life is a great character trait. Serms a shame to sneer at it.

Fish and chips were always a ‘first night of the holiday’ tradition when my children were small 🙂

Yep, imagine being so miserable you can't see the joy in a £3 portion of chips by the sea.

Seahouses - overlooking the harbour as the sun sets - eating fish and chips on the benches is definitely an activity!

If you're at the seaside, the fish is much fresher than if you live well inland at home. Plus they taste better in the fresh sea air. Agree about seagulls though. They steal anything. One swooped down and took an entire ice cream cone from my husband and sailed away with it in its beak. He'd paid £3.50 for it and barely taken a mouthful 😡

we sat on a wall looking at the sea last night, eating fish and chips. It was lovely, and then the kids had a paddle and we walked along the beach which was quieter and cooler than it had been all day. It was a lovely evening.

If anyone goes to Folkestone Papa's fish and chips is the place to go. If you stay for your meal you can get pop and bread and butter and curry sauce and of course mushy peas.

its years ago now but DH and I used to go on holiday to Yorkshire. We used to stay near Robin Hood's Bay and it was one of the highlights of the holiday to walk down to the Bay and have what the chippy called "fish scallops" it was pieces of fresh caught cod sandwiched between two huge slice of potato, dipped in batter and fried. We used to queue for them because they were a local delicacy then walk back up the hill a bit to the pub and sit outside and enjoy them with cider. And yes we used to do this for a few nights because it was so lovely.

In Cornwall. Collect F+C, head to Cape Cornwall or other similar dark sky area. Lie and watch shooting stars after you have eaten. Chat with your mates/family and enjoy the night sky.
F+C is definitely a holiday activity.

We went to a Devon recently and wanted to exactly this, and the vendor passed it to us and literally told us to keep it wrapped until we get to the car or we’d be attacked by gulls 😥😂 not the holiday activity we had in mind!

It's not special to you. It is to other people. What's so hard to grasp about that?

£20 for takeaway seaside fish and chips surprises me. I don’t dispute what you’re saying but is that standard? Isn’t about £12 average- where do you go away?
