to think that "eating fish and chips" is just lunch/dinner, not a holiday activity?!

Seen this on a few threads lately, and when I asked a couple of years ago about ideas of what to do in the evening on hols in the UK, this was the line trotted out most! "Walk along the promenade eating fish and chips". For a start I hate eating when walking, its messy and inconvenient and secondly, what about the other 6 evenings in a week or are we meant to do it every single night?

In most places these days you can't "eat fish and chips on the front" anyway because you get mugged by fucking sea gulls!

Sitting by the sea people watching or watching the sun go down whilst eating fish and chips is a great thing.

One of DH and I best holiday memories is going on a boat trip to an uninhabited island in the Scilly Isles to watch the sunset. We bought fish and chips before getting on the boat and then sat on the beach eating them with a bottle of wine watching the sunset. Think everyone else on the trip wished they had done the same

Fish and chips isn’t really a healthy dinner / lots of grease , no veggies, low fibre, white carbs

so you shouldn’t have it often

and it tastes great

which make it ideal for a treat

You sound a bit grumpy OP

A nice walk by the sea should fix that

Snufkin88 · Yesterday 16:58

I love sitting by the sea eating fish and chips I’d happily do it on holiday or at home but it’s kind of a stupid thing to suggest as an “activity” I agree and it’s heavily romanticised isn’t it

My mum has a nice fish and chip restaurant near her and they do a side salad so I have that as well as the unhealthy bit. It's not right on the coast but about 3 miles away so the fish is pretty fresh.

I had fish and chips at the seaside on Thursday, cost £11, seagulls didn't bother me.
I can't eat and walk though.

Where is this paradise without the bastard chip-stealing seagulls?

OvernightOats101 · Yesterday 17:02

It's not " an experience" but it is something to do?

It's common enough to grab the kids when they finish school in London, drive to the nearest beach and spend the evening there having fish and chips.

And if you are already there, why not. Most people don't eat that every night.

If someone ask what you are doing tonight, and you reply you are having pizza on the beach, it's an activity?

HoppityBun · Yesterday 17:03

It’s something that annoys me because “we has fish and chips and sat on the sea wall / pier / beach” is announced as some sort of rite of passage.

Come now, use your imagination:

Walk along prom eating fish and chips.
Sit by sea eating fish and chips.
Walk along prom eating just chips.
Sit by sea eating just chips.
Walk along prom eating only fish.
Sit by sea eating only fish.

And live it up on the final day (if a week's holiday) by sitting in your car, peering through the rain-drenched windscreen, eating sausage in batter and chips.

😅

YABU, one of the best things about a trip to the seaside is fish and chips by the water!
You can sit on a bench or the edge of the pier or somewhere if you really can’t bear to eat as you walk. You must however eat with your fingers.

You can add mushy peas or a pickled onion then you have vegetables covered too.

Yet another miserable Mumsnetter. Cheer up and enjoy life.

I am not miserable at all thanks, just wondering why on earth fish and chips by the sea is seen as so special. It really isnt!

If you don’t live by the sea eating a meal by the sea is an experience, and eating fish and chips right by the sea is the easiest way to enjoy the view, people watch etc

Sitting there on the harbour wall eating haddock & chips, watching the boats prep for night fishing, with sea gulls calling and the smell of a sea breeze.

Just brilliant. 😎

Blimey it was probably suggested as a bit of a fun thing to do.

You sound like hard work
😶

Zanatdy · Yesterday 17:14

I hate eating outside full stop as if its not seagulls its flies and wasps or sun making me boiling.

Ted27 · Yesterday 17:15

@PyongyangKipperbang

Our requirements for a complete UK seaside holiday are

  • fish n chips by the sea
  • cockles
  • crazy golf and air hockey
  • ten pin bowling
  • walk on the pier
  • cream tea
  • one good restaurant dinner
  • ice cream
  • fresh doughnuts
  • late evening paddle and walk on the beach

We aren't drinkers and don't need evening entertainment as such. We will have several quite long days out, usually with a late lunch so by the time we get back to the flat, have showers etc we are quite happy to just have a snack, chill out - read or watch TV. I'm rather partial to a late walk on the prom.

Where we go the seagulls are quite well behaved, eye you up but don't advance unless you drop a chip. Other places we have been to the gulls are thugs and we wouldn't eat anything outside. There are always idiots though who feed them and it just makes it worse for everyone else

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · Yesterday 17:15

God its just a nice thing to do in the summer. Noone thinks it's the best thing you'll ever eat in life.

Your coming across as miserable!

can you not figure that different people have different views? For many people it is a lovely part of their holiday. What’s the issue?

It's just what you do at the beach Wink The same could be said for a lot of things people do - why do lots of people like a roast on a Sunday, a fir tree at Christmas when you wouldn't stick a tree in your lounge the rest of the year? A lot of us find joy in these simple traditions.
