to think that "eating fish and chips" is just lunch/dinner, not a holiday activity?!

Seen this on a few threads lately, and when I asked a couple of years ago about ideas of what to do in the evening on hols in the UK, this was the line trotted out most! "Walk along the promenade eating fish and chips". For a start I hate eating when walking, its messy and inconvenient and secondly, what about the other 6 evenings in a week or are we meant to do it every single night?

In most places these days you can't "eat fish and chips on the front" anyway because you get mugged by fucking sea gulls!

“Fish and chips on the beach”’was a very popular activity for us! Find a perfect spot. Set up the rug and the bucket and spades and everything. Have a paddle while dad goes to get the fish and chips….lovely!

We've just spent the weekend at Blackpool and one of my son's favourite thing to do was eat some chips on the prom. Definitely a special holiday thing for us.

Iknowthatfeeling · 26/07/2026 20:24

I didn't believe people actually got mugged by seagulls until my 10 year old actually got mugged by a seagull last week.

But fish and chips by the sea sounds amazing so thanks for the food noise I now have!

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 26/07/2026 20:43

I found the OP comment a bit snooty and judgy.

Fish and chips used to be a must do. An essential part of even a day out at the English seaside.

Think Blackpool chippies with the fishing fleet just up the coast at Fleetwood.

I couldn't walk and eat fish and chips at the same time. But many people can and do.

And the price of Fish and chips nowadays. WOW!

My only problem would be with discarded chip cartons, mess etc.

Find a bin to put them in .

Enjoy.

Where is this paradise without the bastard chip-stealing seagulls?

I am en route home now from a day in Folkestone which culminated in excellent hake (catch of the day) plus equally good chips for £11. Sat on a bench to eat 😁

Noodge · 26/07/2026 20:56

I had a funny moment on the south coast this year watching a Gull steal a woman's ice cream, literally snatched it from its cone mid-flight. A load of other Gulls followed her as she triumphantly flew off. Woman found it hilarious and shared a laugh with me and my partner.

Cannot blme them for wanting to eat. If we didn't leave so much crap lying around there would not be as many of them.

LightlyRoamingOcelots · 26/07/2026 21:02

I guess it depends whether you are with people you like spending time with.

The beach in the evening is a totally different place to how it is in the daytime. Spending an evening pottering along the waterfront, seeing the sun set, appreciating the wildlife (often you see flights of bats who are out hunting the insects who are easy to catch in the dusk), mucking arount raking photos where it looks like you are playing a ballgame with the moon, while eating fish and chips - is fabulous with people you love. Not so much if you are with people you are just tolerating.

When we go away in the UK, we’ll always have a fish and chip dinner on the beach one evening watching the sunset

Fish and chips isn’t really a healthy dinner / lots of grease , no veggies, low fibre, white carbs

so you shouldn’t have it often

and it tastes great

which make it ideal for a treat

No veggies? What about the mushy peas, but they have to be done properly, not garden peas squashed with the back of a fork!

It used to be a cheap alternative to dining at a restaurant, but these days fish and chips cost an absolute fortune. If I’m paying over £40 for four of us eating fish and chips out of a plastic tray wondering around outside, I’d rather choose to eat indoors off a plate for a few pounds more.

Reminds me of a German exchange student who said they were taught in their English lessons that fish and chips is what the poor people eat in England! Even then, 30 Years ago, f and c wasn't a cheap meal.

Actually my family had fish and chip shops, the most successful ones are in deprived areas and wealthy areas. It’s the ones in tne sort of average areas that don’t do so well.

if you want a successful chippy then opening it in a deprived area or a wealthy area is pretty much a guaranteed success.

genuinely. I lost count of the amount of unemployed skint mothers coming in and asking for a bag of chips and a sausage for their kid, the kid being about 2. And that would be their dinner.

Emeraldforest · 26/07/2026 21:39

Definitely a holiday activity for me! I had them once only when growing up, and almost never eat takeaway now, but fish and chips by the sea is a treat for me.I actually like seagulls and always share with them.

For some of us who haven't ever had an actual holiday, a trip to the seaside and getting proper fish and chips is a delightful luxury! YABVU

We live fairly close to the sea - 30 mins away - and chips on the beach are still one of our traditions - while sitting, not walking! The seagulls here are well behaved, much to the disappointment of my DC who have heard stories of chip and ice cream stealing gulls, but have never witnessed it! Digging pits in the sand and chips on the beach make for a great family day out. I have fond memories of doing it as a child too, though we lived much further away!

mumzof4x · 26/07/2026 23:28

Oh wow I absoluty love seaside chips - in a cone or tray laden with salt and vinegar
Its the only time I would ever eat fish and chips so it’s a real treat for us!

Pinkissmart · 26/07/2026 23:45

I just went to the seaside for fish and chips the other day. It was lovely

Loftyquail · 27/07/2026 00:09

My nan (born in 1919) used to love a fish and chips supper. We're from the Midlands and I never heard anyone except her call it a supper. I think for her generation part of the excitement was having an evening off from the cooking. She also relished eating outdoors because her parents thought it vulgar and would never let her, even at the seaside. It formed part of the entertainment on coach trips. I get fish and chips on her birthday to remember her. It's really expensive and also unhealthy but once or twice a year is a treat.

My kids still talk about the lightning storm over the sea 15 years ago. I remember that the chips were cooked in dripping 😁

I am not miserable at all thanks, just wondering why on earth fish and chips by the sea is seen as so special. It really isnt!

It really is. Sitting on a bench eating chips and watching the sea is a marvellous experience. Then a walk afterwards.

There’s certainly a touch of head on one side, little frown, I wish I could understand what the common people like to do about this post! 🤣

Indeed!

Magnificentkitteh · 27/07/2026 09:13

I'm trying to think of what other evening activities i would enjoy that aren't "just" food or drink related. I mean i could go to a gig or show but not every night. Bingo or a pub quiz, ditto. Isn't winding down, eating, looking at a nice view just about perfect? What do most people do on holiday in the evenings. Parlour games? (Autocorrect changed that to parkour, which is another option i suppose)

In a restaurant, fine. Its the "sitting by the sea" bit, as if it is somehow an "experience" as a pp said!

The odd time we have had fish and chips on holiday it has been so bloody expensive, I would rather pay a wee bit more for a restaurant! Were we go on holiday its £20 for a small fish and chips, fuck off am I paying that!

It's the "sitting by the sea" bit, as if it is somehow an "experience"

I mean, if by this point in the thread you don't get why fish and chips by the sea is a nice thing to do and a lovely holiday experience, I'm not sure you are going to get it.

Magnificentkitteh · 27/07/2026 09:45

I still don't really understand. Surely sitting by the sea is more of an experience than sitting in a restaurant, if we are being prescriptive about our criteria? The sea has sights, sounds, smells, whereas the restaurant is "just" a table in a room?

SnugDuck · 27/07/2026 09:50

We recently went to Cornwall for a family reunion and this was top of my list of things I wanted to do. Unfortunately my inlaws are foreign and didnt understand the appeal so it never happened and I’m quite disappointed. I love to grab a fish and chips and sit by the sea eating them, then we walk along the promenade afterwards. It’s a lovely family activity for me! Simple happiness is so underrated

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 27/07/2026 14:46

Nothing beats eating fish and chips on the beach. As well as being enjoyable in itself it brings back so many happy memories.
