Fuming about directions woman

HowardsWahey · Yesterday 15:34

I live in a seaside town that, at this time of year in particular, is very popular with tourists. Therefore it's quite common to be stopped and asked for directions or local information. I never mind, but I think a bit of gratitude doesn't go amiss.

Some woman and her husband stopped me today and asked if there was anywhere nearby they could get some fish and chips. I started saying, "Yes, if you walk to the bottom of the road just behind us, you'll see a big retail park with Sainsbury's and Lidl..."

Then, when I'm mid-sentence, she cuts me off and says, "Oh that's lovely - but we just fancied some fish and chips", saying "fish and chips" as if I was a bit simple and needed them explained to me. I gave her a bit of a look and said, "And if you'd let me finish, I'd have told you which turning to take at the retail park for the fish and chip shop".

I thought she'd have the sense to realise she shouldn't have interrupted, but she made a sort of huffing noise and said, "Well THAT'S a bit rude! I was only asking." So I said, "And I was only answering - but you interrupted me. THAT'S rude. Enjoy your chips". And I walked off.

What the hell is wrong with some people?! Someone takes time out of their day to help them out, and they won't take two seconds to listen! I hope she and her droopy-faced husband are still wandering about desperate to find their cod and chips 😄

I might have said when I was interrupted, “Oh, wait no. That’s the kebab place. What you really to do is turn left up here and…” and direct them to the middle of nowhere.

You can't ask for directions and then get fussy about how concise the directions are or which fish and chip shop the stranger directs you to.

If you're that particular about how directions are communicated just use Google maps.

I reckon you also give directions like OP & my Dad 😂

Ezra123 · Yesterday 21:02

She was rude and I’m glad you responded in the way you did!

Nothingl3ft · Yesterday 21:09

I think she was rude, but I've encountered similar people and I'd have probably just shrugged and gone 'ok' and walked off, some people just like to have an issue with other people, she sounds like one of them, directions too detailed, or not detailed enough. Came across a fair amount like that working with the public, no matter what you do or say, they'll have an issue with it, just how some people are 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pistachiocake · Yesterday 21:21

Was on your side till you were rude about the poor bloke, who from your post wasn't actually rude. Surprised she didn't have a phone to find the shop herself though.

Theunamedcat · Yesterday 21:22

In my local town we used to navigate via pubs and churches confused the hell out of visitors but we had SO MANY drive past two pubs (on one road) take the second left at the island by the church with the angel gates left again head towards the other pub turn right chip shop! 🤣

oh please

The woman was rude. Not everyone has to smile meekly and accept rudeness.
CF only get away with because too many people don't dare calling them out.
The OP wasn't rude, she made a point.

You have A LOT of feelings about a very small interaction between 2 strangers though, are you the woman or something 😂

Not everyone has to make nasty slurs and vicious comments about a person's appearance either, (like the OP did about the man in the couple,) but we are where we are hey?

I'm laughing at all the posters getting so offended on behalf of the poor bassett hound husband. It's not like OP said it to his face, what he doesn't know can't hurt him (whereas spending his life tied to a rude impatient twat can and probably does!)

Doesn't take much to amuse you, hey love? Wink

Nope! I just spend all day chuckling. Now I'm amused at people who take everything they read on the internet literally 😘

Not to mention those who are so capable of thinking outside their own narrow viewpoint that they honestly think the majority of people can't read properly rather than consider someone might disagree with them.

Oh and those who use passive aggressive emojis and pet names.

It's like a comedy roadshow chez moi tonight!

Its pretty obvious a tourist at the seaside wants to eat chips on the beach.
Not visit your mates chipper diwn an industrial estate. Thats probably why she was interrupting

You're just making stuff up here. There was no industrial estate. I have no idea who the owner of the "chipper" is. We were literally around the corner from the retail park, and the chip shop isn't based there. I was just telling her which direction to head in.

If she very specifically wanted somewhere along the beachfront, why didn't she A) ask me about that and B) say that when she interrupted? Or C - and this is radical, I grant you - head in the direction of the beach and ask someone when she got there?

Do calm down. "Slurs"? "Vicious comments"? Talk about a drama overdose!

Literally all I meant was that he looked sullen/miserable. No surprise, married to her.

Look, the woman interrupted because she didn’t fully get that fish and chips by the sea entailed passing a retail park. Technically, yes, she was in the wrong to interrupt and not hear you out. But had you really wanted to be helpful, you could have explained and she would likely have apologised. Or maybe not, in which case you would have cause for grievance. Instead, you upped the ante. And you’ve posted on here because you want to be let off the hook. Own it. Learn from it.

"Own it. Learn from it."

😆😆😆

Surely you don't talk like this in real life?! Like someone who qualified to be a life coach in three easy online seminars?

A woman pissed me off. I snapped back at her. She didn't like it. I didn't care. There's nothing to "own" or "learn from".

I do the same. And also give instructions like 'it's just past where Woolworths used to be' which is only helpful if you were familiar with the place 30 years ago

Rondayvu · Yesterday 23:31

As soon as she cut me off I would have walked away but I am of a certain age and sick to fucking death of people. All people at this point. I too live in a seaside town/village so the thoughts of a retail park actually made me shudder - guess I am spoiled with about 5 chippers and not one retail park within a 20km radius lol Still too many people asking directions to other places and not listening though.

GalaDinner · Yesterday 23:36

To be fair, if the husband eats enough chips, he'll put on weight and his face will fill out.

The poor chap's doing his best.

as the OP was just graciously being helpful until that idiot tried to bite her head off, a bit of irony when angry is completely understandable.

I think "nasty slurs and vicious comments* are more than exaggerated but if you don't want someone to laugh at you, then just be polite when you ask for a favour and they try to help?

IdratherhaveaPinaColada · Today 01:39

What's DFL?

Hi, takealettermsjones, DFL is short for “down from London” a phrase that is used by some people in Thanet (maybe other places too but I’m not sure).

The joke just went flying (stolen by a seagull?) past your head babe....

I assume the poster used fish wife as a pun because she was asking for fish and chips...

Doesn’t matter, it’s a nasty insult used to keep women quiet and uncomplaining.

Of course ‘babe’ is a tad patronising too…

Why are you giving this so much headspace? It was a brief interaction where the woman was rude to you and you were rude back. Still not sure of the relevance of her husband’s looks though.

In future if someone asks for directions, just say you aren’t local and go on your way. It is probably far better than giving your valuable time to people.

You’ve posted five or six times to show how very offended you are that the OP didn’t take any shit from a woman who interrupted her and then spoke slowly like she was an idiot. And that PPs agreed with her.
There’s definitely someone giving this too much headspace but it’s not the OP.
Can I ask if you ever found the chip shop?

SquirrelGG · Today 03:11

She was a little rude - but fuming??? The average person would have forgotten about this 2 seconds after it happened. Get a grip.

RanchRat · Today 03:39

I hope ole droopy face got his fish and chips.

Hedgehogbrown · Today 04:46

Why don't old people use google maps?

giddyaunt19 · Today 04:52

NCForOneNightOnly · Yesterday 15:44

You met her energy with the same, that’s the problem. How relevant was the big retail park with Sainsbury’s and Lidl to where the chip shop was anyway?

So when you’re giving people directions you don’t use landmarks?

it’s fairly obvious what Lidl and Sainsbury’s have to do with what the OP was saying.

you weren’t rude OP.

TourdeCrema · Today 05:09

People stop some random stranger on the street

expectation
give directions as they like them, no waffle
direct them to aesthetically pleasing place
give excellent customer service vibes, even if the non customer is rude

next time if you get interrupted

oh gosh I forgot I left the oven on & rush if
send them in the wrong direction
or just stop talking and walk away
