My boyfriend’s mum still has a tracker on his phone… he’s 31

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for just under a year and, overall, he’s lovely. Kind, funny, has a good job, owns his own place. I genuinely thought I’d found one of the good ones. Then something happened last weekend that has completely thrown me.

We were out for dinner about 45 minutes from where we live when his phone rang. He glanced at it, sighed and said, “It’s Mum.”
He answered and the first thing she said was, “Why are you in Oxford? I thought you were just going into town.”

I laughed because I assumed she’d seen a photo on social media or something. But after he hung up I asked how she knew where we were. He looked at me as if it was completely normal and said, “Oh, she can see my location.” I asked if he’d shared it with her because we were meeting up afterwards “No,” he said. “She’s always had it. Apparently she set it up years ago “for safety” when he first moved away from home, and neither of them has ever turned it off.
I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”

The next morning we decided to drive to the coast on a whim. About halfway there his phone buzzed. His mum had texted: “Didn’t realise you liked Brighton. Weather’s nicer where you are than here.” An hour later another message: “You’re parked a long way from the seafront.” Then “Are you staying overnight? I hope you’ve booked somewhere decent.”

When we got back to the hotel, he admitted she checks his location “a few times a day”. He laughed and said she gets worried if he stays in one place for too long because she wonders if he’s been in an accident.

He confessed she also has alerts set up so she gets notified when he arrives at work and when he gets home. Apparently she texted him once asking why he’d left work at 2pm.
He’d gone to the dentist. Then I found out she’s rung him before because she saw he was at a retail park and wanted him to pop into M&S for her.

A couple of days ago I was at his flat when the doorbell rang. His mum had popped round completely unannounced. When he asked why she’d come over she said “Well, your location said you were home and you hadn’t replied to my text.” She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

My boyfriend insists it’s harmless, says she’s just anxious, and thinks I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. He says, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why does it matter if she knows where I am?” I’ve tried explaining that it’s not about hiding anything and that it’s about having some privacy and boundaries as an adult.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

AIBU to think this is completely bizarre, or is this more common than I realise?

It's weird that she's always ringing him up and questioning him about his where abouts 😅

But actually just having each other on the app isn't too odd. Even at his age. I'm in my 30's and me / my friend / all our children ( one of hers is in his 20's ) are all on an app ( life360 ) and we can all see each others locations

So you've been with him a year and this is the first time it's happened yet it seems to now be happening a lot?

bluebeck · Yesterday 12:15

It’s pretty normal to share locations within the family. My lot all do.

A bit weird all the messages and the popping in.

Besidemyselfwithworry · Yesterday 12:15

This is a bit weird going to that extreme. I think life 360 is good for safety but that seems a bit invasive.

I don't get it (don't use tracking!) but even if you shared your location with him, how would his batshit mother know when you were together?

CheeseWisely · Yesterday 12:15

To be honest I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if DH shares his location with his Mum (although she’s in another country) but if he does I’m glad he’s never let on because it’d be a huge ick for me!

Besidemyselfwithworry · Yesterday 12:15

You can just imagine what she’d be like as a MIL or Grandparent - I have a feeling your life just wouldn’t be your own!

OriginalSkang · Yesterday 12:16

I wouldn't mind it if she didn't comment or ask about it barring if he were at a hospital

This. I once had a relationship with a mummy's boy. When push comes to shove, who do you think he always put first?

ThirdStorm · Yesterday 12:17

I couldn’t date somebody who thought this was ok.

I think it’s more the regular invasive questioning checking that is bugging me.

DontCallMeBaby · Yesterday 12:19

Tracking, fine. Alerts, asking why he’s somewhere, turning up at the house - NO.

DD and I have each others locations, she’s 22 but I could easily imagine still doing it at 31 😁But the deal is I never ask why she is, or was, somewhere. And I don’t set alerts unless I have a really good reason. Have told her she can switch it off any time she wants but please tell me so I don’t panic.

I also track my elderly father. It got switched off earlier this week, when he switched it back on I made it mutual. He pointed this out as he has no desire to track me … I told him I’d turn it off if I was ever anywhere I didn’t want him to know about!

Yogagrandmum · Yesterday 12:19

Very odd. If I'm meeting my child I put watsapp location on so they know what time I'll arrive.

Bakeittillyoumakeit · Yesterday 12:19

Oh god I married a mummies boy and my advice would be to get out while you can. Can you imagine if you have a child with this man? Either he needs to start with the boundaries or you need to run for the hills.

AII41 · Yesterday 12:19

I am ok with the tracking for safety/info, so if there was an emergency/incident it's helpful to the police etc.

Messaging to ask why he was leaving work early, can be construed as interest. If he is ok with it, I'd let it pass.
Brighton trip - she's not inviting herself along, merely keeping in touch and showing interest in her son.

Turning up unannounced at the house, well, I guess that used to happen in the old days before people had phones!

If she has other behaviours that are intrusive, that needs to be added to the story. The tracking alone doesn't feel too much to me.

That said, I do not share my location with anyone other than my children, and would not let a partner in to that circle.

I wouldn't be bothered, but if you are, then you are not compatible.

“Within the family” is you and your children. Not your 60+ mother tracking her adult children daily. That’s just nuts and unhealthy.

Yup

Get out now.
This is your future if you waste any more time on him and his weird mother/son relationship.
Honestly, that level of enmeshment is creepy af.

Lifelover16 · Yesterday 12:21

Does she live alone? Does it give her some security?

Newjobideas · Yesterday 12:21

This sounds like enmeshment. I would not stick around.

Sherararara · Yesterday 12:22

Tracking for emergency use is something. Here it’s obvious she spends her day monitoring his every move. That’s nuts. I would insist he turn it off there and then and if he doesn’t dump him. He needs to grow up and she needs to cut the cord.

MistressoftheDarkSide · Yesterday 12:22

I'm in my 50s and have a reasonably close relationship with my 31 year old son. We speak once a week mostly, he tells me what he's up to, sometimes identifying locations, all of that. I keep a tight grip on my concerns and paranoias - someone was reportedly recently stabbed close to where he lives and I resisted the urge to ring in a panic because he's not the only bloke who exists in the vicinity of said stabbing and if it had been him I would have been informed soon enough.

I cannot begin to fathom tracking a grown man and inserting myself into his relationship in the manner described here. Nor would I expect him to surveil me! If this is the level of enmeshment enabled by technology I'm even more worried about the detrimental effect on people's psychological well being than I was before.
