My boyfriend’s mum still has a tracker on his phone… he’s 31

I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for just under a year and, overall, he’s lovely. Kind, funny, has a good job, owns his own place. I genuinely thought I’d found one of the good ones. Then something happened last weekend that has completely thrown me.

We were out for dinner about 45 minutes from where we live when his phone rang. He glanced at it, sighed and said, “It’s Mum.”
He answered and the first thing she said was, “Why are you in Oxford? I thought you were just going into town.”

I laughed because I assumed she’d seen a photo on social media or something. But after he hung up I asked how she knew where we were. He looked at me as if it was completely normal and said, “Oh, she can see my location.” I asked if he’d shared it with her because we were meeting up afterwards “No,” he said. “She’s always had it. Apparently she set it up years ago “for safety” when he first moved away from home, and neither of them has ever turned it off.
I said that was unusual for a 31 year old man. He shrugged and said, “It makes her happy.”

The next morning we decided to drive to the coast on a whim. About halfway there his phone buzzed. His mum had texted: “Didn’t realise you liked Brighton. Weather’s nicer where you are than here.” An hour later another message: “You’re parked a long way from the seafront.” Then “Are you staying overnight? I hope you’ve booked somewhere decent.”

When we got back to the hotel, he admitted she checks his location “a few times a day”. He laughed and said she gets worried if he stays in one place for too long because she wonders if he’s been in an accident.

He confessed she also has alerts set up so she gets notified when he arrives at work and when he gets home. Apparently she texted him once asking why he’d left work at 2pm.
He’d gone to the dentist. Then I found out she’s rung him before because she saw he was at a retail park and wanted him to pop into M&S for her.

A couple of days ago I was at his flat when the doorbell rang. His mum had popped round completely unannounced. When he asked why she’d come over she said “Well, your location said you were home and you hadn’t replied to my text.” She genuinely couldn’t understand why that might be crossing a line.

My boyfriend insists it’s harmless, says she’s just anxious, and thinks I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. He says, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why does it matter if she knows where I am?” I’ve tried explaining that it’s not about hiding anything and that it’s about having some privacy and boundaries as an adult.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

AIBU to think this is completely bizarre, or is this more common than I realise?

The thing is, even if she stops (which she won't) she will always see you as the woman who got between her and her son. This will not end well.

inkgirl · Yesterday 12:24

I get it from a safety point of view but to message or turn up unannounced is a bit far. I have my kids location but they are all still kids

LlynTegid · Yesterday 12:24

Telling your mum or dad your hotel contact details if you go on holiday is one thing that I did (they called when 7/7 happened is the only time they used that). Other than that, no more.

Time to end the relationship, the response is the worst part of it all.

Rubes24 · Yesterday 12:24

My family have each other's locations but the calling is a bit much. Sort of his problem though not yours? If he dosent mind then whatever. Dont give her yours!!

Thecomedyclub · Yesterday 12:25

My mother and I have it but only so we DON’T disturb each other! It’s so If I need to call her I’ll check she’s home first. And same for her.

Nobodycares · Yesterday 12:26

Run.

His mother is obsessed by his movements and the constant texting and boundary bulldozing is downright creepy. And he doesn't see it (or pretends not to).

Run.

LordFarquard · Yesterday 12:27

I have never had a tracker on my phone, but some of this sounds like my mother.

You’re not wrong to dislike this but you should remember that these issues are his mother’s and not your boyfriend’s.

Your BF probably knows she’s overbearing and has inappropriate boundaries but he also knows that getting her to change will probably make things worse. People with parents like this are able to manage their situations to minimise the disruption to their life. If she is like this when he is 31, imagine what she was like when he was 21! Speaking from experience, he likely welcomes this current version of his mother because the versions which came before were genuinely intolerable.

If he takes the location off, I wouldn’t put it past his mother to suddenly need him to text every hour, or to turn up at his door twice a day.

My mother used to drive to the end of my sibling’s road to see if their car was parked on the drive - just so she knew they were home. If they weren’t she would start calls and texts. It comes from a place of ignorance.

Mumsnet is full of “you have a DX problem” but these posters never stop to consider the reality of dealing with difficult people and the desire we all have to keep our loved ones happy. You see that from all the “go no contact” posts whenever someone’s MIL does something mildly irritating.

So you've been with him a year and this is the first time it's happened yet it seems to now be happening a lot?

Indeed.

ginasevern · Yesterday 12:32

I know nothing about phone trackers. Never used one, never will. But I can see the advantages if you have teenagers or possibly someone ill or even having a suspected affair. I guess I can also see the benefit if a family member is going somewhere a bit sketchy and safety is a big concern. Otherwise the thought of someone (anyone) tracking my every move, or me theirs, as an adult is weird as fuck and I would've thought psychologically unhealthy. It's like Big Brother from 1984. It does concern me that this level of technological enmeshment will become totally normalised, if it hasn't already.

afaloren · Yesterday 12:32

I don’t think it’s weird to share locations per se, DH, PIL, DM and I all do, but the constant monitoring and badgering is a red flag! She sounds like a nightmare.

ThingsCouldBeEasier · Yesterday 12:32

I'd run. Sounds very enmeshed, and you'll end up in a relationship with the mother, not just the boyfriend. The questions about what he's doing and why are a really big red flag.

Yep 🤨

OrianaK · Yesterday 12:32

Family sharing location is pretty normal, in fact it’s healthy to be transparent with people one is close with.

wether his mother calls ‘ too much’ is for him to decide. If you don’t like it, you can leave.

BunnyLake · Yesterday 12:33

It’s a bit ott but I know a mum like it. She’s got the gf on it too and they’re all as bad as each other so it’s quite funny 😂 her son is absolutely lovely though, so don’t jump to negative conclusions about him too quick. They treat it all quite humorously.

Ilovemsrachel · Yesterday 12:34

Mum2Fergus · Yesterday 12:15

This!

yes, RUN!

T8g · Yesterday 12:34

As others have said this should be you.

do not share your location. You will be getting texts all about your relationship, ooh you never spend time together. What were you doing here etc.

your boyfriend is being weird for humouring this. Its not just a simple safety thing when it’s becoming text messages and clearly watching his movements all day

I'm a bit older and remember the time when all we had was a landline phone. Recently I noticed that a family friend who we know through my son had location tracker on his phone for girlfriend and vice versa. I was horrified! This is quite dystopian to me! I wouldn't want anyone knowing where I am at every minute of the day, what a scary concept.

It’s not normal at all imo. I can see why it would be for minors or people with health conditions/disabilities, but he is a fully grown adult. It would be a dealbreaker for me.

Sounds like the aprons strings have not been cut. Run. This will continue to invade your lives forever more.

Besidemyselfwithworry · Yesterday 12:15

You can just imagine what she’d be like as a MIL or Grandparent - I have a feeling your life just wouldn’t be your own!

Yes this. And therefore I echo previous comment about run for the wind! I was only at the start of your post thinking this would be the scenario, and then you mentioned she wants to track you too. No way, you will also get endless questions about why you were at whatever place for so long etc

mondaytosunday · Yesterday 12:36

The location thing - meh. Though the fact she checks in regularly then texts to comment etc IS OTT! He can disable the location thing himself if he wanted. If it reassures her fine. But the notifications of arriving at work and constant questions and comments - that sounds like a super jealous and possessive wife and I couldn’t cope with that!

Teresa7 · Yesterday 12:37

well, I’m nearly 30 and have my mum on find my friends. I quite like it actually. But equally if she started questioning my day to day movements I’d probably tell her to sod off 😅

MyDeftDuck · Yesterday 12:37

Hmmmm…..having a phone tracker for safety for a solo traveller is one thing……checking up on an adult several times a day AND commenting/phoning to question what, why, when is a completely different matter! Mummy sounds a tad possessive to say the least.

FloofyKat · Yesterday 12:39

I think this is weird behaviour from both him and his mum. He is an adult and should be able to look after himself. She should be able to trust him to do so and not shadow his every move. It really isn’t normal, in my experience.

outerspacepotato · Yesterday 12:39

He's a mama's boy and he's letting you know that's not changing.

Then yesterday, he casually asked if I’d be willing to share my location with him permanently because “it would make things easier.” When I asked why, he admitted his mum had suggested it so she’d know where both of us were if we were together.

Red flag, red flag!!

Run like the wind from this one. He expects you to cater to his mom to the point of giving up your privacy and allowing her to keep surveillance on you. His world revolves around his mom and he expects yours to do that to. Do not share your location with her. It's none of her business where you are and who you're with and these two are extremely enmeshed and are trying to drag you in. Don't do it.

He's not a good one, this is a huge deal breaker. You will never be a priority with this man.
