To be amazed this family were allowed on the flight (Ryanair)

We were flying with Ryanair last week to go on holiday.

Before boarding the plane, we heard them calling cleaners to our boarding gate. As we got closer, there was a young boy who had been sick all over the floor. He clearly had a fever and wasn't well at all.

We boarded the plane, and you guessed it, the family were sat really near us. Before the plane even took off, he was sick 2 more times.

During the flight, he was sick every hour. The Mum said 'it is such a shame he has a bug at the start of our holiday'.

I am just amazed that he was allowed to fly when visibly unwell with a sickness bug.

I am absolutely amazed we didn't catch it but I bet other people did. I thought it was SO unfair that he was allowed to fly, potentially infecting so many people on that plane and ruining holidays people have looked forward to all year. I know kids aren't allowed to fly with chickenpox, so why can they with a sickness bug?

I'm really surprised the airline let them fly. I can imagine the staff were very unimpressed too.

That's so grim. I'm sure the staff thought it was too. I don't know on what grounds they could stop him flying though, as much as they'd want to. With chickenpox there's a very clear cause with a very clear set of risks associated with exposure. Being sick could have any number of causes many of which don't have a direct impact on anyone else, presumably making it hard to stop someone joining the flight. Would be delighted to be proved wrong though! I have also had a flight trapped next to someone who vomited many times before we even moved on the tarmac and it was a very stressful flight as a result. I also didn't get sick, but I was very anxious about it for a good week or 2 after as the man was SO unwell (his wife said it was malaria but who knows!).

Similar happened last weekend where a little boy perhaps 2yrs old three up spectacularly at the check in desk. I overheard the mum say he had the same stomach bug as his sister!

Thankfully they weren't on the same plane as us.

Years ago my parents were flying home and a very unwell man was wheeled onto the plain throwing up into countless sick bags and then throughout the whole flight. Horrible for him of course but wasn't much fun for the people sat round him. Parents were directly behind and wore masks!

The issue is that vomiting can have loads of causes and most of them aren’t contagious.

That happened on a flight to Singapore - our family all sitting in front of the sick child. And yes, we all came down with it the next day.

I get that but nobody vomiting before a flight should be allowed on. Its deeply unpleasant for passengers and crew.

I feel bad for the child, the parents should have cancelled or re arranged the vacation.

But there are umpteen reasons why someone could vomit and it not be contagious - are you saying those people should never be allowed to fly?

Yes the crew looked very very pissed off when they kept having to carry plastic bags full of sick bags and vommed on clothes etc to the back of the plane. So unfair on them too. I don't know who makes the decision that they're allowed on or not

The selfishness of this is astounding! I would have more understanding if it was a flight home from holiday because obviously the poor kid would need to get home somehow, but the outbound flight at the start of their holiday?!

I wonder if you'd feel that way if it was you or your kids being sick and your holiday was cancelled over nothing.

I'm partly playing Devil's Advocate but there are so many reasons someone could vomit and only one or two that are contagious.

Surely it is their call ?

But your travel insurance wouldn't cover you for a sickness bug surely? So they either go and he's fine after 48hrs or they lose their whole holiday.

If everyone's throwing up left, right and centre it's hardly nothing. They might have bounced back to normal quickly but it's not fair on other people.

From a medical POV being known to have a contagious disease is a clear cut solid reason for the crew to deny boarding, other than that it's a judgement call by those responsible.

So you don’t actually know if he had a sickness bug?

Weird his mum would announce his illness like that.

Maybe it was food poisoning. Or too much hassle to deboard them and their luggage.

It could have been any health condition that causes someone to vomit.

There’s really not that many reasons a young child with a fever (so not overeating or a migraine or travel sickness as that wouldn’t cause a fever) would be repeatedly sick, unless it’s contagious.
There’s also the risk it’s something more serious and they deteriorate on the flight eg appendicitis. So I am surprised he was allowed on.

Given that if you are ill on a cruise ship you are quarantined due to the speed a bug can spread in such an enclosed environment I'm amazed the airline let them fly.
