AIBU to cancel my eyebrow procedure after this comment?

I went for a consultation yesterday to enquire about possibly getting microbladed eyebrows. The lady runs an independent company in her home. The consultation was helpful, she spoke me through all my options etc and I was ready to leave feeling positive.

However, just as I left, she made a passing comment about how ‘maybe next time I’ll let her know if I think about getting my lips done too’ (or
something to that degree, can’t remember the wording).

I do have extremely small, thin lips and I’m so self conscious about them. I actually had a small amount of filler a few years ago which has dissolved now. I was a bit taken aback so I mentioned this. She started to talk me through filler and blush, but she mentioned how you have to build up slowly to make ‘something out of nothing’. Basically saying I have no lips.

I am already aware of this and it’s made me feel awful. I am really low on confidence as is. I know it’s her job to try and upsell but I’m conscious about them as it is - the fact she brought it up without me mentioning it just made me think it’s more noticeable than I thought.

I actually had a few tears on the drive home and now I’ve cancelled my eyebrow appointment.. AIBU? I don’t know if I’m being too sensitive because I’m low on confidence!

Maybe it was a bit insensitive. But she was only promoting her business. I can't see she really did anything wrong. But if you don't want to have your eyebrow treatment there then don't.

She may be trying to upsell, but I think that's mean and uncalled for.

But it shouldn't be up to them to "see the need" of course they can advertise their services even do promotions, but to say to a customer they might want to think about lip filler is unethical, saying that beauty therapists are not regulated so it might depend who trained them,

I am going for a treatment today the beautician will do that and not say oh do you fancy getting "this or that " done.

Of course a business is only in it for the money. They aren’t doing it for the good of their health

I agree, there should be "a body" that therapists need to register to after training.

She makes her living by encouraging people to be dissatisfied with their appearance! You need to think on that!!!

Go out and climb a hill, have a swim, help a charity, have some fun! Stuff this dreadful calculating woman who feeds off people's insecurities!

I went for a consultation on semi perm eyeliner and spent 30 minutes listening to the woman put me down about my eyebrows (I'd had them done 3 months ago and wanted a light shade to match my fair skin/hair) and I LOVE them.

She also told me off because I don't have a skin care routine, telling me 'I'm 62 and you're 34 and look at the difference in our faces'

She also told me I'd benefit from wearing my hair tightly pulled back like hers, eh.

Was so fucking rude. No I never booked in. When she chased me up about it a few days later I told her she needs to work on her people skills. Wanting to sell me 1k worth of treatments and facials and all I wanted to know is if eyeliner would suit my eye shape without mascara or not.

She may say something about lips to all her customers and also as someone who works in the field she may notice things other people don't, like a hairdresser might comment about your hair being thick or thin or needing the roots done things that no one else would really notice. But she wasn't exactly tactful.

I had a lady do this to me when I went for lip filler and she started trying to sell me laser hair removal for my face! I have a slightly hairy upper lip and chin and it did make me a bit uncomfortable as I self conscious of it but I just put it down to her trying to sell stuff and didn't over think it too much. I went back a few weeks later for more filler and she went on and on about it again, even though I said I wasn't interested the time before and that really got my back up and I never used her again. This was around 10 years ago and since then I have actually had laser elsewhere. 😂

It’s what she does for a living all day everyday so she is perhaps laid back about things. People who want this level of semi permanent in their brows prob have also considered their lips … which I am guessing you have considered?

I would have assumed that she meant you need to build up the area where is currently no lip - not really a dig at you but I can see if this area bothers you why it upset you.

Sounds like she is not a good fit for you though, and that’s ok. Look elsewhere

She almost certainly didn’t intend to upset you. But you’re entitled to be upset regardless of her intention. These things happen. Forgot about her, find a beautician you get on with. Microblading takes a while so you might as well be with someone who is going to make you feel happy and relaxed during your session.

Yes I think this is quite normal. They’re (aestheticians) are not thinking in terms of offence, they’re thinking it’s just another area to treat.

It’s just skin / hair to them.

I had this too and it was done in such a bitchy smirky way.

They should, however, be interested in ensuring their customer has a good experience. Running a business isn't just about making money. It's about delivering a quality service or product while making your customer happy and satisfied.

I think it was not a kind comment to make. When I was getting lip filler once I got a comment that next time she will pop some Botox in my crow’s feet and she started talking about Botox generally for my face and how it would give me a refreshed look.

Then more recently the hair dresser randomly said how such product would fix the hair that is growing in small area on my crown and tried to product push it.

Finally went to get my hair cut elsewhere and the woman said how the previous hairdresser (the hair-growth product-pushing one) had missed blending in layers entirely.

I would prefer to pay for no one to comment on anything actually when I get a service done, it’s a bit uncalled for.

I have naturally dark eyebrows - I was put off by a brow technician who asked me if I'd like colour!
Her employee, who usually does my brows was mortified- she once told me that women my age would kill for natural colour, like mine.

I have voted YABU for getting any kind of procedure done including microblading. YANBU to be offended about the lip comment.

You are being unreasonable to give someone your unsolicited opinion on what they do to their own brows.

Its the world we live in now .. she was out of order and insensitive I wish people could just be themselves .
I dont like all the eyebrows either just natural shaped and natural colour to frame the face is fine .

Tbh as an independent company she probably has to make reccomendations/upsell to make a profit and as this is her job, she is meant to notice what a customer might want/benefit from, it certainly doesn't mean it is obvious or that someone not in her line of work would notice. I'm not undermining your feelings but she wasn't aware that you are self-conscious about your lips and probably thought she was helping by reccomending another service that she offers. I wouldn't have cancelled the original appointment but if I felt she was pushing a service I did not want I just would not go back.

Once I went for an eyebrow wax and the woman asked me if I wanted my mustache done too 🧐
I said no and she asked me if I was sure.

I'd think really carefully about having my eyebrows microwaved.
Two women I know who had it done regret it.
They both have pink tinged eyebrows.
Both had it done about 5 years ago though so it could have changed

Yes. I do think you are being a bit sensitive but please remember she is running a business and was trying to sell more procedures. Have a think and decide exactly what you want, then try another beautician. You'll be fine.
