AIBU to cancel my eyebrow procedure after this comment?

I went for a consultation yesterday to enquire about possibly getting microbladed eyebrows. The lady runs an independent company in her home. The consultation was helpful, she spoke me through all my options etc and I was ready to leave feeling positive.

However, just as I left, she made a passing comment about how ‘maybe next time I’ll let her know if I think about getting my lips done too’ (or
something to that degree, can’t remember the wording).

I do have extremely small, thin lips and I’m so self conscious about them. I actually had a small amount of filler a few years ago which has dissolved now. I was a bit taken aback so I mentioned this. She started to talk me through filler and blush, but she mentioned how you have to build up slowly to make ‘something out of nothing’. Basically saying I have no lips.

I am already aware of this and it’s made me feel awful. I am really low on confidence as is. I know it’s her job to try and upsell but I’m conscious about them as it is - the fact she brought it up without me mentioning it just made me think it’s more noticeable than I thought.

I actually had a few tears on the drive home and now I’ve cancelled my eyebrow appointment.. AIBU? I don’t know if I’m being too sensitive because I’m low on confidence!

This reminds me of my first Botox appointment, I only wanted my elevens done but the doctor pointed out my “deep line” on my chin, it never really registered before but now I’m very conscious about it, also when I went to the hairdressers a while back and the trainee washing my hair commented about 3 times how thin my hair was 🙄 yeah like I’d never noticed until you pointed it out. We’ve all been there OP.

I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with your lips! I‘ve never looked at someone and thought their lips are too thin, it’s just the beauty industry trying to make money by making women insecure.
And in my opinion, plumped up lips, even when done subtly, always look slightly wrong. They make women look different but not actually better. Apologies to anyone on this thread who’s had theirs done, it’s just my opinion.

Never ask a barber if you need a haircut - it’s just an upsell. The s-PMU who does my brows also does the lip tint (which I have as an aside, highly recommend).

She’s potentially tattooing your face for presumably ££. She should be building trust, not knocking you down. Don’t go back. And I agree with a pp that doing face tattoos from her house is dodgy. Also I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with your normal lips; the pool noodle mouth fad will die soon.

I absolutely would not go to someone who tried to upsell me especially on aesthetics. I have had botox over the years and the people I've gone to have always been really really cautious and adamant about only giving a little even when I've said perhaps I want a second area they'd be no no no you don't need it. I went somewhere else once who had been recommended and she tried to upsell me filler on top of the botox.
I left without having what I've booked for and I said to her I don't appreciate unsolicited opinion on things I haven't asked about .She tried to backtrack but wasn't prepared to have the appointment. The thing that really annoyed me was the thought of her perhaps doing that too younger clients or those who are more insecure. I would also perhaps leave a comment on her social media pages shows one about trying to upsell you.

When you cancelled the appt, did you tell her why?

Your lips are your lips and they are beautiful. They are how you smile, how you kiss your family and children, they are how you talk. How you eat. Partly how you breathe. They are you. Please love yourself.

We are all amazing really when you think about it. We are all beautiful. Life is precious.

Years and years ago I booked in for a lip blush but when I arrived the practitioner told me that getting my brows done instead would make the biggest difference. I actually ended up doing as suggested. Try not to feel it’s too personal - she’s coming from the angle of scrutinising lips and brows from habit and probably had no idea she was coming across as hurtful or rude. I agree that her comment was uninvited but it might be that she was trying to be helpful in suggesting a treatment where she felt she could make a big difference. I wouldn’t see someone who makes you uncomfortable though. The way to approach it was to ask you if you’d ever consider any other semi-permanent work, not actively suggest it. I wasn’t self conscious so wasn’t upset but I can understand why you might feel down.

Oh my god. That is absolutely horrendous. I’m so sorry someone was that rude to you. I’d be really upset too.

I dunno. You’ve got to a beauty therapist to make yourself look better than you do right now. The fact that you’re self conscious about your lips shows that she could perhaps do something to ‘improve’ how they look. Whether that’s something you want is up to you. Objectively it sounds like you do have thin lips. To me that’s fine certainly not everything about my face is the most ideal ratio. But it’s my face I wouldn’t change it. But if you’re changing something and there’s an opportunity to change something else would you not be open to hearing about it?

Yes exactly what I was thinking! And the fillers from some random working from their house… even if she’d broached it respectfully this should be a massive red flag!

The aesthetician that does my Botox has a small studio at her house. She’s a registered nurse (which is her day job) who has multiple qualifications. They are not all bodge job Betty’s, you just need to make sure you do your research.

OP she has also never suggested a procedure to me. Trust your gut and go somewhere else where you feel comfortable.

Oh dear. You’ve obviously never lived in the Middle East. Beauty Salon workers there are terrible for telling you how it is.

That said OP, I can understand why you were upset. She was clumsy. Don’t let it put you off having it done, though.

You’re not at all being unreasonable OP. Something very similar was why I never went back to my usual eyebrow bar and started going to a different beautician. I mentioned this to her and she told me that in her training they were told specifically to never randomly suggest treatments in this way - upselling is something completely different.

In my case what the eyebrow ladies said to me was ask me if I also wanted my arms waxed while pointing at them - I was there just to do eyebrow shape. Upselling is offering new eyebrow tint - not an entirely different treatment just cause they felt I looked hairy.

Don’t do it. My sisters look horrible 5 years on. Like weird faded shadows

You’d be better off seeing a doctor or dentist. Nurses aren’t taught detailed facial anatomy as part of their degree.

I think shes rude, insensitive & pushy. I'd go somewhere else. This happened to me, when I got my eyebrows done once... she was encouraging upper lip... etc. It pissed me off, and i never went back. 💐

I would never use someone who doesn't do aesthetics as their main job. A nurse might be more au fait with needles, but doesn't have anywhere near the same knowledge of anatomy as a doctor.

Me too - I am as blonde as they come and you literally need a microscope to see anything! I am hardly Poirot. Waxing it would make it stand out more!

I doubt you need such details to be able to perform safe work. I think it depends on the artistic flair of the aesthetitician as to whether you get a good result or not (and of course following the necessary safety protocols). From experience, I've had much superior treatments from a nurse than a doctor in this regard

I think they're taught in beauty school to recommend further treatments if they see a need. You can hardly blame her, but I can also see why OP would be upset. I don't think I would be so cheeky if someone had obviously thin lips for the very reason that they could be offended.
