BBC “what has the BBC done for me”

Am I the only one who silences the TV when the BBC starts with their advert featuring Ramesh Ranganathan? It’s the BBC advertising (but they don’t show ads or do they now) how amazing they think they are through the comedy antics (?) of RR. It just boils my 9!$$

OP posts:
pag3turn3r · 22/07/2026 07:33

Bore off OP. I am sick of people whinging about the BBC. If you don't watch live TV, don't pay it.

I love BBC Sounds podcasts (so many are binge-worthy), Traitors, HIGNFY, the Proms, Wimbledon, the World Cup matches I chose to watch on the Beeb because of thr lack of ads, their weather app, their news... CBBC, Horrible Histories, Operation Ouch.

I genuinely think we're lucky to have them.

Freysimo · 22/07/2026 07:36

The BBC ad copied a similar one it did in 1986 with John Cleese in the RR role. What a difference in the quality of the participants, BBC had genuine talent then. I do watch BBC, use iPlayer and Sounds so pay licence fee, however, I'm totally against anyone who doesn't watch having to pay. Make it subscription.

Thawtfulpanda · 22/07/2026 05:48

I love the BBC. I listen to BBC radio all the time, I find their news app and weather app the best. And I love some TV. I will be forever thankful for pride and prejudice.

BUT the advert is crap. And it is full of old shows. It almost was a showcase of things they used to do but don't do well now. Nods to strictly, the tiredest of shows, EastEnders. It should be about BBC 4 content, huge documentaries, proper quality drama. The BBC offers good quality in the face of netflix docs that say the same thing for an hour with some dramatic music over the top. They missed a trick in trying to appeal to the football audience I think.

I would imagine that the demographic who listen to radio four and documentaries etc are more likely to appreciate and pay for it without whinging so don’t need it selling to them perhaps.

The person on this thread who (oh the irony) saw the advert whilst watching the World Cup and doesn’t have a licence. Good grief.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 22/07/2026 07:43

I’m a strong supporter of a licence fee funded, or if it has to be, central tax funded news, current affairs and factual programming service.

But a significant amount of programming is just aping the commercial providers. That should go.

And, more importantly, the BBC has increasingly been taken over by ‘group think’ about fashionable causes like transgenderism and the pro-Palestine movement.

The BBC is worth keeping, but it must change if it’s to maintain trust and support.

AnnDroidAnnDroid · 22/07/2026 07:49

I wouldn’t want the BBC to change, it couldn’t make the type of programmes it does in the same quantity and quality if it was a subscription service and I love watching TV without adverts.

Thawtfulpanda · 22/07/2026 07:54

I forgot about horrible histories and horrible science. And numberblocks. Those shows pretty much run the ks1 curriculum in most schools as far as I can see.

UniquePinkSwan · 22/07/2026 07:55

VestibuleWeaver · 21/07/2026 22:48

Oh, yet another anti-BBC rant. How original.

It’s deserved. They hid Savile and Rolf Harris.

Sartre · 22/07/2026 07:57

The BBC is great, I love lots of BBC content and have nostalgic memories about much more. I still think the licence should be axed and that it should be made into a subscription model à la Netflix or Disney. DH said it wouldn’t survive, it would have to adapt quickly imo to pull viewers in when competing with the others.

Neighbours87 · 22/07/2026 07:58

I love the bbc so much quality that a commercial broadcaster could never make
cbeebies
countryfile
panorama
storyville
pilgrimage
gardeners world
bbc 2 music output on Saturday night
the proms
the one show
graham norton
wimbledon
the snooker
david Attenborough
the other bennet sister

the bbc talks up to people and the ad is just reminding the viewers of this before the charter renewal.

Horrible Histories has for years, it also used to be Come Outside and something called El Nombre when I was at school!

Ablondiebutagoody · 22/07/2026 01:44

I saw it during the World Cup final. Its awful and for me highlights how little the BBC do for me. Fucking Enders and Casualty. That's why I don't have a licence.

So you are watching the BBC and not paying the licence fee?

2021x · 22/07/2026 08:04

As someone who now lives outside the UK believe me the BBC is worth it, if only to increase the quality of the news and reporting in the UK.

And yes shit stuff has happened there but we only know about it because it is public money… believe me it has happened other places too.

Most of those are good examples of a service catering for a range of tastes. But not the One Show.

SummerSummerSummertime · 22/07/2026 08:10

Yes the ad is cringy but when you look at what we actually get for it, I think it’s good value …

Think about the shows everyone is obsessed with right now—stuff like The Traitors, Industry, The Night Manager, and Amandaland, plus giants like Doctor Who and Strictly Come Dancing. 1]
The BBC completely funds all of those, along with massive live events like Glastonbury, Wimbledon, and the World Cup, completely ad-free. There are no annoying commercial breaks interrupting your binge-watching, whether you are watching live or catching up on BBC iPlayer.

But it's not just the big London-made dramas. A huge chunk of the money goes directly into regional programming. It pays for your local BBC Radio stations, regional news broadcasts that actually cover what's happening on your doorstep, and massive productions based outside of London—like Waterloo Road in Greater Manchester, Casualty in Wales, and local storytelling across Scotland and Northern Ireland. If the BBC disappeared, local news and regional creative jobs would completely tank.

Outside of entertainment, it pays for BBC Bitesize, which helps educate kids.

Plus, you get a trusted, fact-checked news service that isn't controlled by corporate billionaires or political parties.

Every single penny we pay goes straight back into hiring British actors, writers, and local production crews.

When you break down the new £180 annual price, it works out to less than 50p a day. That is significantly cheaper than a Netflix or Disney+ subscription, and you get way more variety for the money.

It's definitely worth keeping imo.

sandgrown · 22/07/2026 08:10

I don’t watch much TV but when I do my first port of call is BBC and their I player. I never get any further as there is so much choice and no adverts ! . I listen to Radio 2 every day. I think my TV licence is good value .

VestibuleWeaver · 22/07/2026 08:21

UniquePinkSwan · 22/07/2026 07:55

It’s deserved. They hid Savile and Rolf Harris.

Rolf Harris also presented programmes on ITV, as did, for example, Gary Glitter.

Yetanothername3 · 22/07/2026 08:23

The BBC is so far removed from its original remit/charter (much like the NHS) that it should implode.
So many production companies where the credits used to read, for example, BBC Natural History Unit etc. etc.
It the past the BBC used to be criticised by all political parties, which was a good barometer that the BBC was presenting a balanced view. Then it started losing or cancelling its good programmes. Now it is awash with repeats and politically correct "dramas".
It should revert to news and weather.

Nitgel · 22/07/2026 08:31

The ad is awful and doesn't really sell the bbc well.

I don't understand some decisions for example rebuilding the whole eastenders set which cost millions in real brick etc.

There is also so much archive that isn't available and should be for the cost of licence.

I agree. They're full of themselves, yet most people think they're crap and resent paying the licence fee. I rarely watch it now. I watched a few football matches this world cup, and I watched the last Gavin and Stacey and I'm watching Ann Droid at them moment, but apart from this, nothing. I used to be a massive Doctor Who fan, but can't bear it now. Haven't watched it since Matt Smith, and have all of the seasons up to - and including him - on DVD.

If BBC went subscription only, I would NOT sign up. I don't think many people would. And this is why they won't do it ... They know they'd go under.

Also doesn't help that I detest Romesh Ranganathan. Odious little twerp.

Lentilcakes · 22/07/2026 08:36

I pay the fee as I (and the family) watch some of the programmes and listen to the radio. Used it a lot more when kids were young - CBeebies/cBBC had some amazing content.

i don’t particularly like the BBC as an institution- covering up paedophilia, some very biased reporting, and the output has declined or just jumped the shark. I would like to see more original content, interesting documentaries and dramas and not the same old shite being churned out which gets really tedious. I do admit I watch Casually though 😂 I’ve given up all soaps except that one.

Let’s see some sort of shake up of the fee structure and institution itself (and get rid of the bias).

Naunet · 22/07/2026 08:38

If the BBC want to keep being funded by the public, then they need to stop with the appalling bias.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/07/2026 08:43

Monstershark · 21/07/2026 23:32

Oh yes, and have less patronising stuff about working class people written by oxbridge grads. Time to start recruiting apprentices from state comprehensives

Thats when you get angry threads on here about how unfair it is that poor Lancelot and Lottie can't take advantage of the same scheme when they saw a state school child in Dulwich once, which is clearly just the same.

Kaftanesque · 22/07/2026 08:50

I listen to loads of stuff on BBC Sounds and prefer a chanel that doesn't have adverts.
Yes we pay for Netflix and Apple as well and so I don't begrudge the licence fee tbh because I like the choice between them all.
Be careful what you wish for those that knock the BBC constantly. I honestly think compared to TV in some countries for all its faults, and the odd annoying 'advert' it would be a shame to ever lose it.

AprilMizzel · 22/07/2026 08:50

I saw it for first time last night - and turned over eye rolling and we still pay the licence fee and think it still worth having in some form.

I think quality of BBC output gone down over the years and their fee gone up and up.

I think it may need sliming down and remodeling but do value some bits of it still but the funding model - well that needs looking at again.

pag3turn3r · 22/07/2026 08:51

UniquePinkSwan · 22/07/2026 07:55

It’s deserved. They hid Savile and Rolf Harris.

So did other institutions, plus countless other pedos and abusers. Awful, but not unique to the BBC and reflects a problem with society at that time, rather than with the BBC itself.

Though you already knew that, didn't you?
