How to approach neighbour about 6am screaming…

Larrythecatforpm · 19/07/2026 13:13

My neighbour opposite has young children, I sympathise and understand kids that age are going to make noise, it’s just what they do.

However every single weekend for the past 6 months since then moved in (and I imagine most of the summer hols) the neighbour has been letting them play out in the front garden from 6am or getting them in the car and they just scream full pelt non stop.
It’s right opposite my bedroom window, they wake me up and I can’t get back to sleep.
I am absolutely sick of it. They are council tenants can I put in a noise complaint? I have mentioned it to the mother before and she didn’t seem to see the issue using the excuse they’re little. Angry

This morning it was from 5.45am.

Obviously your one of the parents who have no respect for others.

rainbowbear10 · Today 07:30

Phone the council and report the noise. 8am would be a more respectable time to let the kids out.

Avie29 · Today 07:37

Screaming is just not needed, nonone wants to hear a kid screaming at any time of the day let alone 6am, crying, whinging whatever fine but screaming is just ridiculous and should be told to stop by the parent.

Open the window and shout 'shut the fuck up'. Hopefully that should do the trick.
Stop pussy footing about with them.
Them being council tenants is irrelevant.
We're quite wealthy and so are my neighbours but had enough of them last weekend and told them to 'shut the fuck up' last weekend when we and half the road had enough of them.
Not heard from them since and don't care.

😂I was going to suggest this. Go full on New York like in the movies, and yell out the window.

Well it happened again at 5.30am this morning, off NDN went for her cigarette in the front garden, qeue the kids screaming again and waking me up. Was very pissed off as DC had been up most of the night with diabetic hypos so was running on a hours sleep.
Opened the window and told her if she doesn’t stop her children screaming I will put in a noise complaint to the council when they open at 9am as her children were acting feral.
She actually took them back inside; but just been to put my bin out and she was giving me death glares from the front window… hoping I haven’t made this worse!

So its just a short period of kids screaming 10-20 mins. The thing that is getting on your nerves is that you cant get back to sleep!

Id have a nice word with her, explain your problem, take some cakes maybe always a winner, and ask her to go in the back garden for a fag. Or you could move to the back bedroom, that might be a solution.

Back room isn’t an option my eldest has a sleep disorder and is in there. Wouldn’t subject him to screaming feral children, he would sit at the window with his nerf guns shooting them.

We have lots of neighbours. One has a loud vintage motorbike that he gets out of the garage at unholy hours and revs up. There are dogs, lots and lots of loud children, there is music, there are power tools, jet washers, strimmers. Church bells. Our recycling service comes at stupid o'clock and the glass collection is really noisy. They're all probably really nice people.

My point being, I choose to live in a populated area, I choose to accept that comes with the noise of the humans I share it with. The alternative is I spend most of my time frothing at the mouth, like my neighbour, who is driving herself mad with the opposite perspective and thinks she is owed peace. Get some earplugs, or some noise cancelling headphones, don't fight it.

Edited

I love how "sanctimonious" you are being about this but people don't have to put up with unreasonable noise. Nobody needs to let their kids scream before 6am out in the garden!

She is being very inconsiderate. You need to keep a diary of the times and what exactly is happening and also, video it on your phone. You can then pass this onto the council when you complain.

Bonkers1966 · Today 09:16

How could you have made things worse? She does not care about anyone but herself.

Nerf guns might be the solution!

Who tf lets their kids play out in the front garden at 5:45am/6am? Thats batshit crazy parenting….

I dont do that but my autistic son wakes up at that time and he is absolutely ready to play at 6 outside. We are often in the local playground in summer at 6:30 for that reason as I can't let him out in the garden but keeping him inside is impossible.

Gossipisgood · Today 09:42

Next time they're out screaming at stupid o'clock in the morning open your window & politely shout down, 'can you keep the noise down please people are trying to sleep & it's too early for screaming & shouting' If that doesn't work then start playing heavy metal music on full volume around the kids bedtime or when you're out on a night out leave it on all night.

6am is clearly bang out of order, but I don't think there is a good time for screaming or prolonged noise. The trouble is I think most parents are able to tune out their children's noise to an extent. I wish I could.

Our new neighbours haven't even moved in yet, they just visit, but they're loud and this weekend was pretty annoying. Our house is detached but right on the boundary of their plot. On Saturday their toddler had a loud tantrum for 30 minutes in the front garden. That wasn't too bad as a one off although there was no attempt to soothe it or take it further away from our house or indoors. But on Sunday they brought several kids over and there was shouting, squealing, crying, screams, making a racket dragging something with plastic wheels up and down the driveway (next to our windows) for 5 hours until we went out. No attempt to quieten the kids or move them away from our (closed) windows or take them indoors. I'm dreading them moving in unless the weather turns soon.

The previous neighbours had no kids but were keen early sunday morning petrol chainsawers and had a barking dog that they never walked. I am at breaking point after 3 years of that (which isn't the new neighbours' fault). But I shouldn't have to sit in my house with loud rock music on or wear earplugs or noise cancelling headphones for hours to block them out.

We are planning to move somewhere more secluded but can't until at least next year.

Our neighbours on the other side have their grandkids round from time to time, and it's fine. But the difference is, when the kids are outside they interact with them, distract them, soothe them, don't have them outside for more than a couple of hours at a time and take them indoors or down to the bottom of the garden if they start making a racket. They don't just leave them to shout and screech for hours.

See that’s acceptable as your taking him away from waking people up. We have a perfectly good park at the top of the road in a field, they could scream all they like and i wouldn’t suffer due to it. Never seen her take them to the park though even in normal hours!

Talk to the council.

I had problems with noise, they had me download an app, I think it is called 'the noise app', you use it to record the noise the time of day and where in your house you are.

That means the council have proof they can take with them when they visit.

eveningprimrose74 · Today 10:15

You could put a complaint in with the environment agency, you could also put in a complaint with your local housing association. I'd expect the housing association to deal with a nucience problem quicker than the environment agency

I think you probably have made things worse, and moreover if you do report her to the council for noise now, she will know it is you.

In your position, I would go round and talk to her calmly. Apologise for losing your temper and explain that it was after a long period of lack of sleep. Try to create a sense of bond by explaining your kids also have sleep issues. Explain the impact on you and your kids. I often find that finding common ground creates sympathy and makes people want to help each other.

Is there any reason why she doesn’t take them to the park? Is one or both ND? (Not that should not be a reason for them not going to the park).

OneShyExpert · Today 11:39

Why should she move? She owned her home! It’s not her fault she got stuck with a neighbor that can’t/or won’t quiet her children!

Maybe let him do that, then the neighbour will get the message

If they’re making a racket it’s just not on though. Nothing against neurodiversity

Well done OP. That is outrageous behaviour and you have called her on it. I would still inform the council and social services.
And if it happens again I would call the Police and say you think a child is being abused. Time for the big guns. She obviously does not give a shit.

If he aimed at the mum that might work well😂
