AIBU to think 'Beauty and the Beast' is utterly inappropriate for a first dance?

AIBU to say that 'Beauty and the Beast' is entirely inappropriate for a 'first dance' wedding song?! A connection of mine is keen to have it as hers. I hurt her feelings by exclaiming 'You can't!' But really, Am I Being Unreasonable to think it's a huge no-no?

I walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of this song... 😂😁 made every single person attending smile and it was lovely.

YABU. Weddings are personal and about the people getting married, not the guests.

I couldn't be less interested in what someone thought was 'their' song and chose for a first dance.

Why would you even have an opinion?

I agree.

Cotton eye Joe is a far better choice

This was my "father/daughter dance" 🤣

aMintLion · 19/07/2026 07:04

If we were to get married again our daughter (fully in her Beauty and the beast phase) would love it if this was our first dance and it would be special to us for that alone.

you need to apologise for being a bitch, how would you feel if someone criticised you first dance song!? None of your business!!

PollyBell · 19/07/2026 07:08

Why on earth would i need to have an opinion on this? Just don't use it yourself and i would apologise for be a controlling annoyance

OrdinaryGirl · 19/07/2026 07:10

No, I think Push by Matchbox 20 or Prodigy’s Smack My B**ch Up would be an inappropriate choice for a first dance song. Beauty & the Beast is a bit weird but not inappropriate.
If you take out the words ‘beauty and the beast’ it’s quite a sweet song about two people getting together. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Of course… to a point. This song is titled “Beauty and the BEAST” 😂 Even if you first had sex while watching the Disney movie and will forever equate it with that special moment (ok that would be weird anyway!) … surely you’d pay attention to the title?!

Umm - that's not its title, it's called "Tale as Old as Time". It's very romantic and a gorgeous melody. I wouldn't have a Disney song myself but it's fine.

I will forever remember the wedding I went to where they had a live (very good professional) voice and harp duo performing "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic while the register was being signed!

Cla7 · 19/07/2026 08:23

I find the entire film inappropriate because it portrays an abusive relationship sold as a fairytale…if he locks you in, shouts and starves you don’t worry, just hang around and he’ll turn into your prince and you get your happily ever after. I firmly believe it’s one of these things we’ll look back at in 20 years and say ‘what were we thinking showing this to young girls’.

lordbaddingham · 19/07/2026 08:26

Some wedding traditions are so odd when you think about them in too much detail, but it doesn't really matter and it will give the guests a good laugh. Is the groom good looking? Mind you the beast was actually quite hot in beast form too, wasn't he 😬

TheHappyPenguin · 19/07/2026 08:27

We had Alice Cooper - "Poison" as our first dance.

  • "You're poison running through my veins .... I don't wanna break these chains .... "

8 years later, we're still married so the chains are still there 😂

I quite like seeing different things and choices made at weddings as it they stick in my mind for years and don't fade into the generic choices....

Cheese55 · 19/07/2026 06:37

The lyrics of that are quite dark arent they ?

Yes. Didn’t choose it because the lyrics represented our relationship in any way though 😂. We chose it because it was my brother’s favourite song and he’d been killed 6 months previously, and we wanted everyone to a) remember him and b) get up dancing.
A first dance doesn’t have to represent your relationship. It can be whatever you want it to be, for me whatever reason.

babyproblems · 19/07/2026 08:29

God this is cringe.
people will remember it for all the wrong reasons 🫠

Ive been to about 40 weddings and can’t remember a single song chosen for a first dance. Do people actually take that much notice of these things? They barely register with me.

Yeah same. Ive been to lots of weddings of people I am very close to but if you asked me to name their first song I couldn't do it, I cant even remember one 🤣

What not even “Smack My Bitch Up” by The Prodigy.

Or Under My Thumb by the Rolling Stones 😬

Gold Digger.

Smack my B*tch up?

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 19/07/2026 08:46

It’s OP’s wedding I presume she knows why she chose the song.

You were unreasonable for expressing an opinion you weren’t asked for on something that is none of your business, especially to a “connection” - not even a friend.

Summerishere123 · 18/07/2026 19:41

I should have said I approved! It was awesome!

We had game of thrones theme tune for our walk down

red wedding 😘

LittleBearPad · 19/07/2026 08:59

I don’t understand why it’s so problematic - would love OP to explain.

malefields · 19/07/2026 09:07

What’s weird is you butting in with your opinion, to be honest.

Poppingby · 19/07/2026 09:11

The story is about a delicate beauty taming a literal monster by loving him. People can do what they want of course but I don't really see why it's difficult to understand what the op thought might be controversial about it! Hopefully the h2b agrees he was a hideous monster before they met.

Similarly when my friend asked me to play at her wedding I avoided playing 'the lady is a tramp' even though I had it performance level ready to go at the time of asking. Lovely song though.

Blogswife · 19/07/2026 09:18

I certainly wouldn’t tell somewhat what they can and can’t do at their own wedding - especially “ a connection” not even a close friend .
