AIBU to object to my partner bringing her brother on dates?

For full transparency I am a male.

I have been seeing a woman for a few months now but it’s starting to go wrong and I don’t know if it’s me.

She seems to be obsessed with her brother. When we first met she talked about him all the time, everytime we went anywhere she would comment on how her brother would like this and wouldn’t like that etc etc. one time she actually brought him on a date! I was waiting for her at a restaurant and they both walked in, I had met him previously so no introductions needed - she said he was at a loose end so she invited him along. I ended up cutting the date short after the meal and later commented that I was disappointed that she had brought her brother along as it was meant to be a date. She went ape shit and accused me of trying to control the time she spends with her family. Not at all, I just don’t want her brother on our date!! Was this really so unreasonable of me?

Last weekend she invited me to hers for dinner, brother was there when I arrived. I then learn he’s staying for dinner. I didn’t say anything after the last shit storm but again just ended up cutting it short.

Now, tomorrow we have plans to go York for the day, it’s been planned for a while. She messsged me this morning asking if I’d mind if brother comes. I said “yes actually, we planned it as a day away together, having brother there totally changes the dynamics”. She didn’t reply for ages and has just messaged me back now saying “ok, never mind”. ??

Prepared to accept I’m being unreasonable if that’s the general consensus

Does she feel responsible for her brother in some way? Is he a child or has a learning disability or is vulnerable in some way?

This?

MrsTomRipley · 18/07/2026 15:40

I think we can guess why his wife left him.

Thanks everyone, glad to know it’s not me.
definitely her brother as I’ve been subjected to the childhood photos more times than I like to recall
It’s so weird I’ve never known anything like it. What makes it worse is that I don’t like him that much!

I think you need to throw this one back! 😂😂

Ponoka7 · 18/07/2026 15:44

I thought that you were going to say they were travellers or another similar culture. This isn't normal, you are better off out of it.

TheIdlerReturns · 18/07/2026 15:44

Sorry OP, if this is not a wind-up your gf sounds batshit. Have you managed to speak to the brother on his own (if that's possible) about it? I would cast your net wider. Sounds really odd.

Robogob · 18/07/2026 15:45

Have you got a brother you could bring too?

MyLimeGuide · 18/07/2026 15:46

OMG definitely dump her!! What a weirdo!

Okiedokie123 · 18/07/2026 15:49

That’s really odd behaviour. I’d end it and explain why - you want to date her not the pair of them. It’s s bit incestuous.

Don't be ridiculous.

As it if would be the general consensus?!?!

YANBU, that's strange!

I seem to recall a very old song I heard once, 'And her Mother came too'

extrasushiplease · 18/07/2026 15:54

Very strange. Luckily, it's an easy drop, and one you should definitely do.

Yes.
And op would be happy to accept it if randoms on the Internet told him it was ok.
🤔

TheCurious0range · 18/07/2026 15:57

That is odd, I mean arriving at hers and he's unexpectedly popped in so she invites him to stay for dinner is probably quite normal as a one off, but him chaperoning all of the time is a bit much

ThatCyanCat · 18/07/2026 16:02

Is she Cersei Lannister?

🤣🤣🤣

icingonmycupcake · 18/07/2026 16:11

Oooh no. You don't need this level of weird in your life.

They're too close for anyone's comfort. 😟

catlover123456789 · 18/07/2026 16:11

I dont think this is gonna work unless you start bringing along your sister! (Its not you, its her)

Duckagogo · 18/07/2026 16:14

Whatever this shitshow is, it's their shitshow. I wouldn't take this any further.

Bonbon21 · 18/07/2026 16:17

Set her free... Then she can date her brother forever!

It’s really weird. To the point it makes you wonder if something super weird and fucked up is going on between the two of them.

ItsNotMeEither · 18/07/2026 16:21

You’re not unreasonable, but you’re also not compatible. Sounds like he will always be a constant presence. Some people do love to spend that much time with family, others, not so much.

She’s not your person. He will always annoy you.

EmailsaysOOO · 18/07/2026 16:26

Bonkers. When you want to arrange something in future, I think you need to say " do you want to do x ? I'm talking about just you and me by the way, can we go out without (brother) ?."

Hopefully she'll be able to leave him at home. Good luck 🤞

NewKidOnTheBlock99 · 18/07/2026 16:28

I dated someone like this and safe to say it didn’t last long because the sister decided she didn’t like me & didn’t want to spend time with me and that would be too difficult to navigate as they had plans to live together. 10 years later both of their Facebook profile photos are still with each other (as they were then)despite the fact he’s married with kids. Honestly, it’s weird and I wouldn’t bother.

No disability or anything, he split with his wife at the end of last year apparently and she says the wife would never let them spend time together - makes you wonder!!

Makes you wonder what?

Coconutter24 · 18/07/2026 16:35

Makes you wonder what?

Presumably if they tried to pull the same crap with his wife too!
