To be sick to death of Andy Burnham already

1000 replies

Viviennemary · 17/07/2026 20:57

I'm sick to death already of seeing Andy Burnham and hearing his voice. And he isnt even PM yet. Come back Keir Starmer. All is forgiven. I dont know how I'm going to suffer 3 or four more years of him in charge. Playing the part of the working class hero who is going to save the country. Give me strength.

But in this context it IS political, so what does it mean if not illegality or force?

It can something that is staged or taken by surprise. In Burnham's case, the coup was orchestrated by an ego and facilitated by backstabbers. Politics is a brutal world.

Did MN posters shun name calling, rude references, abusive ones even, about Tories in government? Did you avoid using them? Do you now?

Do you caution people who use these terms about Tories or any other politicians that aren’t Labour? Do you report them?

I do try and avoid it and do report if necessary

Do you?

And I don't really mean words like 'bollard' or 'kemikaze' more the misogynist ones used for Rayner and Reeves and the right wing 2 tier.

Like the post on this thread that was deleted but agreed with by other posters.

Strike as in a violent blow - as in a blow to the state? That’s violent surely? That is what the political term coup implies violence.

Let's be sensible about this - no one is implying violence. Language does matter. And we use it imaginatively - it is part of being human, to me.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 18/07/2026 21:12

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/07/2026 21:09

You’re a political scientist! Why didn’t you say so before? We couldn’t possibly doubt the wisdom of a ‘political scientist’.

My apologies. The study of politics is political science. We are discussing politics on this thread therefore we are all political scientists. Anyway, you were going to tell me what coup meant in the context of AB’s rise to power or were you just trying to make a cheap point?

Puppymania · 17/07/2026 21:13

I dont think accents matter in politics. Give the policies your scrutiny not his accent.

Agree, our politicians aren't ex actors or random rich businessmen, they don't get into power thru charisma, and that's a positive- we need it to be about policy, not accents or entertainment value.

BermudaRhombus · 18/07/2026 21:16

Sometimes in the English language words are used in ways such that their meaning within a particular context is widely understood, but may not accord with the literal dictionary definition. A previous poster gave the example of a ‘civil war’ in the Labour Party. In this context it does not mean an armed conflict. But anyway, becoming fixated on this specific point is probably derailing the thread for everyone else!

Greenleavesandsunshine · 18/07/2026 21:18

BrandiedAromatics · 18/07/2026 21:12

But the language of violence does matter, it matters massively. Look at Trump, he uses violent language and the says it doesn’t matter while using rhetoric to encourage people to riot. Look at our own country an ex politician has been murdered this week. And old lady who was a politician has been fucking murdered.
Language matters. The way we use it matters. We may be having a bit of ‘bants’ on MN but other people read this and it impacts on their world view.
Coup is a term that is used specifically to imply illegality and violence - we - you - may use it to mean something lesser but that is not how others hear it. If there is a coup in this country do we not have to respond in kind with violence? If there has been a coup should we not take to the streets? This isn’t laughable look at Jan 6th in the US.

Think of it as a game of chess or snooker. Snooker not allowing yourself to be behind the 8 ball. Starmer was hopelessly naive in the political manoeuvring of both his cabinet, back benchers and political stalwarts such as Diane Abbott. It is a coup d'etat but it's been done within 'modest humble' confines. In other words, Starmer had lost the confidence of his party but he wasn't going voluntarily.

Ubeinserious · 18/07/2026 21:21

DontSayItsOver · 17/07/2026 21:08

Give the guy a chance for god sake. He hasn’t even laid out a single policy proposal.

No thanks id probably rather stick pins in my eyes! He sounds just as bad if not worse than starmer....both terrible...dont deserve any chances.

Isinglass20 · 18/07/2026 21:22

An American I knew back in the 60s who ran an upmarket manufacturing tailors commented on how lazy were the Brits and he brought over Italians to produce his hand tailored menswear.

We’re still a lazy bunch that’s why we are where we are.

By all means refer to snooker or chess but this week or all weeks we need to avoid reference to political violence. We create the political eco system with our discussions, our clever little points our wins and loses, we need to avoid too much hyperbole and stay a long way from violent rhetoric.

Tbf political language is often heightened and people understand it. A pp said Labour’s civil war is another example. Or a fresh blow.

I very, very, very much doubt that you, and posters whose comments about politics you’re happy to support and agree with, don’t use and haven’t used rude or abusive terms about politicians.

Since you ask, I try not to be abusively rude about politicians. But I’m honest enough to accept that I almost certainly will have been very occasionally. I absolutely don’t make threats or encourage violence, and fully reject those bad things without any partiality.

I also don’t go in for pejorative nicknames and catch-phrases. But that’s more a matter of taste. They seem popular enough among Labour supporters.

I can’t be bothered to look back on this thread but my recollection is that what you took issue with (from a poster that wasn’t me) was not a threat or encouragement of violence but a vulgar comment about Burnham being a cunt.

Sorry I meant pool not snooker but you're still not listening. You're putting literal emphasis on violence when a coup can be carried out without force.

PetuniaT · 18/07/2026 21:31

It's what you get for voting Labour.- Wilson, Callaghan, Blair/ Brown, Starmer - I've lived through them all. Burnham is just more of the same.- look at the three losers he paid homage to in his "Sermon on the Mount"

BermudaRhombus · 18/07/2026 21:31

Still trying to imagine what life must be like if you interpret every word by its dictionary definition. Confusing at best.

I think that you’ve rather boxed yourself into a corner, and rather than admit to a mistake, you are simply compounding your error.

SleeplessInWherever · 18/07/2026 21:32

Honestly. People.

”We want personality” - Urgh why is he speaking to us and taking photos.

“Keir was too formal” - the man wears jeans!

”Nobody listens to the working class, disadvantaged etc” - why is he saying he’ll listen to people?!

“We’re sick of formal stuffy out of touch politicians” - Andy?! He’s not my mate.

”We want people with a clue” - his political career is too long

“We don’t want establishment politicians” - he’s being too intentionally different!

“We want a new PM” - no, not a new new one!

This is why we have a revolving door on Number 10. Aimless moaning that people either don’t want solutions to, or won’t wait for.

You can very very much doubt it as much as you like, it is true.

I didn't see any of your posts before you quoted me and asked me the question, so no it wasn't about you or anyone in particular. So not sure why you jumped on it.

And maybe we can stop with this labour supporter, non labour supporter stuff when it comes to namecalling as it affects all politicians.

Yes, sometimes we have been describing it as a bloodless coup. Of course, we understand that sometimes it isn't but to be fair, although I do think, we are dashing off posts on MN.....

YourAmplePlumPoster · 18/07/2026 21:39

Nobody likes a scheming backstabber who gets a top job like that. Sir Keir put in the hard work to get Labour presentable and fit to be elected to be replaced by this carpetbagger

This applies to other politicians. Look at Kemi.

She gets loads of attacks.
