To ask why the England team (the men) keep falling at the final hurdle, (well virtually at the final hurdle,) at the football World Cup ... and The Euros too?

Not an England-team bashing thread, but why, oh WHY do they - the men - keep falling at the final hurdle (well, virtually the final hurdle,) every time at the football (soccer) World Cup - and the Euro Cup too...?

They do so well, and get so far, and then BANG they're out. Nearly always in the top 8, or top 4, (and the top 2, in the World Cup once, and a couple of times in the Euros I think,) but never the winner. (Not since 1966 anyway!)

Is it nerves? Is it that they're so anxious to win that they keep making silly mistakes? Are they just not quite good enough? WHAT IS IT? Why do they keep getting so close, but just never manage to get the win?!

As I said, I am not bashing them, and they did well, and I am proud of them, but I just get so frustrated that they can't quite ever get the win!

No I saw the match. His light tap was nothing more than that. Unlike the out of control, frothing argies. Still, fifa likes them so it's all good.

His 'light tap' is not allowed. News reports are saying he may face disciplinary action

ComeOnEngland12 · Yesterday 16:49

If he does face action then so should Messi and the man who struck Anderson and all the others along with sheet gate gang.

I don't have the memory of a goldfish. The 'troubles' are irrelevant. NI wasn't even in the tournament.

Argentinians we're holding up a raggy bed sheet with a goady, fake message on it. Do keep up.

You do have the memory of a goldfish. You were the one who brought up Ireland, you started the conversation about it!

you wrote

'We have such loyalty for all home nations it is sad to see how full of bile some scots, welsh and irish are.'

I then pointed out that some Irish people won't support England due to the recent conflict between UK and Ireland .

You then wrote 'ah that's ancient history, the falkland war was more recent'.

I then wrote that the UK/Ireland conflict is actually more recent than the Falkland war.

At that point you then wrote 'what have the N.I troubles got to do with argentina'.Even though you started the chat about it. Such gaslighting!

I worked in Spain. The climate is very condusive to sport and outdoor life. The people are super fit as a result. Britain not so much.
I imaging latin countries like Argentina have a similar if not more varied climate and outdoorsy culture than Britain does. Plus they put all their emphasis on football rather than rugby, cricket, hockey etc.

Well fine, I'm not bothered if he does? The point is the argies did far worse throughout the actual match and seemed to get away with it. Bit like their scruffy bed sheet protest.

I think it's more stature tbh. Spaniards and argies all seem very small and quick. Surely that's a bonus in this sport.

Oh pipe down. Street fights? In your dreams.
i guess they had every right to make fun of you as you scored one tiny goal. We got through to the final four. So on the back of all the Scottish goading, you got a taste of your own medicine.
Except we are one of the top teams and you are most definitely not.

You've literally proved my point 👏👏
And, yes, street fights.
There have been fewer arrests than usual at this tournament so far. Usually there's a lot of trouble wherever England fans go.
But I personally think this year's improved behaviour is because the Tartan Army showed everyone how to enjoy the tournament, and watch games without fighting after matches. There was never any expectation for Scotland to go further. We know that. We don't pretend otherwise. We just enjoy it for what it is - getting to the WC for the first time in decades, as opposed to being fuming when we get to the final four 🤦🏼‍♀️

Tell that to Erling Haaland, considered by many as the best out and out striker in the world atm.

There is a place for all heights in football. Messi and Maradonna aren't/weren't that big IIRC.

I'm not familiar with a 'love tap'? I'm not bothered what it was tbh, the match was over and it was nothing compared to their grabs and pushes during said match.

Yes Messi is tiny. That was kind of my point.

Morelovelyandtemperate · Yesterday 17:27

Only one team wins every tournament. Why do you think England should win over any other well-funded team? (Or even a badly-funded team, since they all already play for top teams so shouldn't need extra funding.)

Someone talks about you…do you just walk straight over and hit them in the head?!

Depends what was said. I read that he called him monkey in Spanish. I don’t know for sure if it’s true. But if it is, then a slap round the back of his head was well-deserved in my opinion.

Piglet89 · Yesterday 18:28

mindymoo11 · Yesterday 16:10

It's not a competition piglet89. And I think your posts are getting more and more bizarre.

First you said that you knew more than me because you lived in Northern Ireland and I haven't.

When I pointed out to you that you are wrong. that I have actually lived in Northern Ireland, and I actually lived in it during the era of the troubles, now you know more than me because you lived there longer than me. I saw soldiers on my street in Northern Ireland all the time.

Also it's So strange that you are directing your aggression at me and not at Gloriia, who wrote that the Falklands war was more recent than the Northern Ireland troubles!

How amazing that her inaccurate sentence didn't draw even the slightest bit of irritation from you. Be consistent.

Gloriia obviously knows less than you about Northern Ireland. isn't that what you get angry about? Why are you not spouting bile at her?

Edited

I mean, I very clearly do know more than you do. Not necessarily because I’ve lived in NI longer (tho that probably helps) - but because I’m just plain old better informed than you are.

Also, quit policing the thread! I can challenge whomsoever I like. As it happens, I’m challenging you because you’re claiming to be this great Irish historian, which you’re clearly very far from. I challenge your knowledge and the accuracy of some of the points you made and suddenly it turns into this ludicrous bun-fight - essentially because you don’t like being challenged.

BangBangBangBangBang · 16/07/2026 09:21

Exactly this. Far too risk averse after the goal, meant we spent the end of the match basically playing in our own penalty box and it was only a matter of time before we conceded.

A very wise manager once said, the best form of defence is to attack.
Someone should have written that on a white board for Tuchel

The tartan army were not there for long.
They over exposed them on the BBC.
There has been no trouble with the English fans and the Scottish fans were back home again before the tournament started seriously.
Interesting there was a fight at our school today between some Argentinian students and some Scottish students. The Scots were trying to antagonise them against the English.
All over Tik Tok apparently.
Seems the Scots start young.

lovecotswoldsliving · Yesterday 18:55

@gorgeousSpringtime. Why don’t you start a thread asking why Scotland, Wales and Ireland never get past the first hurdle, let alone the final hurdle? That might be more relevant for you, instead of goading.

EastGrinstead · Yesterday 19:26

GorgeousSpringtime · Yesterday 12:39

I do blame Tuchel a bit for the loss too (as many others on here do.)

I do wonder, deep down, if these Non English managers deliberately stop England from winning. Tuchel is bloody German. Why would he have the best interests of the England team at heart?

Sven Goran Erikkson is Swedish.

Fabio Capello is Italian.

Maybe I'm just chatting shit, and spouting wild conspiracy theories.

Maybe not.

I do not want another non English manager for the England team.

Yeah, right.

England has a God-given right to win the World Cup, so all these foreign managers must be to blame.
