To ask why the England team (the men) keep falling at the final hurdle, (well virtually at the final hurdle,) at the football World Cup ... and The Euros too?

Not an England-team bashing thread, but why, oh WHY do they - the men - keep falling at the final hurdle (well, virtually the final hurdle,) every time at the football (soccer) World Cup - and the Euro Cup too...?

They do so well, and get so far, and then BANG they're out. Nearly always in the top 8, or top 4, (and the top 2, in the World Cup once, and a couple of times in the Euros I think,) but never the winner. (Not since 1966 anyway!)

Is it nerves? Is it that they're so anxious to win that they keep making silly mistakes? Are they just not quite good enough? WHAT IS IT? Why do they keep getting so close, but just never manage to get the win?!

As I said, I am not bashing them, and they did well, and I am proud of them, but I just get so frustrated that they can't quite ever get the win!

The other team were better on the night.

NoAprilFool · Today 08:59

Because other teams are better.

EverytimeItPours · Today 09:00

Because they’re good but not as good as a few other teams

Floatingdownriver · Today 09:00

They are out played. It’s as simple as that. However, in England the press, fans and everyone love to build it all up and expect a win. The minute it doesn’t happen, everyone is vilified and the media tear them all apart. Don’t be part of that. It’s dreadful. Getting to the semis is impressive and a super achievement.

3luckystars · Today 09:00

They didn’t FAIL, they got way further than most other countries? Countries who celebrated getting so far in the World Cup. England did really well. Why can’t you just enjoy things?

professionalcommentreader · Today 09:01

Because the competitors get tougher and they are not at the same level unlike the women’s team who are.

FrenchandSaunders · Today 09:01

The Argentinians played very dirty last night ... if the ref had been doing his job properly the result may have been different.

Having said that, it was a big mistake to go so defensive after that first goal.

GorgeousSpringtime · Today 09:01

@3luckystars I didn't say they failed, I said why do they keep falling before the end? I think they did well.

Because they’re a really good team, but not quite as good as some other teams, but they are set up by the media as the rightful winner of every tournament, making it harder than it needs to be when it doesn’t happen.

Absolutely this.

I wish some people could just celebrate the achievement of getting as far as we did without ripping them to shreds for not winning the whole thing.

ETA: OP, that isn't aimed at you. Just my thoughts in general.

Screamingabdabz · Today 09:02

Because they’re not that good. Jude Bellingham and Jordan Pickford carry the rest of the team to a degree and it’s not enough. They were lucky to get as far as they did.

TheJuryIsOut · Today 09:02

Because unfortunately they have this mentality of sitting back and defending a 1-0 lead rather than going for another goal. It happens time and time again.

@3luckystars I didn't say they failed, I said why do they keep falling before the end? I think they did well.

But they didn’t ‘fail’ at all? Do you only like participating if you win? That’s no fun.

canthavetoomanylights · Today 09:03

They’re not as good.
Most clubs have players from other countries because they’re better than the English ones.

BabyFromthere · Today 09:03

Because they are one of the best teams but not the best ? It’s just that simple. Sometimes you get near the top but never reach the top in any career.

This. Why can't we appreciate the team reached the semi Finals of a truly global competition. I bet the Norwegian fans and media aren't ripping their team apart after their performance.

So much unnecessary negativity and nastiness.

I didn't say they FAILED FGS. Stop saying I did!

Because the other teams are better then them.

It is very simple really

Eta - apols, I read fail not fall.

Because it’s hard to be the best in the world at something and they are not the best in the world. I’d say this is the best England team for years but just not quite good enough - I didn’t agree with TT’s tactics last night but that’s not why England lost. At the end of the day Argentina are a very good physical side and messi is an amazing playmaker.

JHound · Today 09:06

I did not watch it so going by reports. I think lack of confidence when they face a team known to be dominant.
So it’s like they allowed themselves to be intimidated by Argentina and the minute they went one up they resorted to playing like scared chickens (overly defensive) instead of the aggressive attacking style they showed against Croatia, Mexico and even Norway.

They are a good team, with strong players and they need to let themselves think that.

GirlsInGreen · Today 09:06

The seeding i think, we get seeded too high, put in a relatively easy group & then fall flat when we meet class teams.
Really enjoyed watching them.

3luckystars · Today 09:06

I read ‘failed’ your post has been edited also.

fashionqueen0123 · Today 09:08

After the England goal and between Argentinas first, they had 12% possession.
