To ask why the England team (the men) keep falling at the final hurdle, (well virtually at the final hurdle,) at the football World Cup ... and The Euros too?

Not an England-team bashing thread, but why, oh WHY do they - the men - keep falling at the final hurdle (well, virtually the final hurdle,) every time at the football (soccer) World Cup - and the Euro Cup too...?

They do so well, and get so far, and then BANG they're out. Nearly always in the top 8, or top 4, (and the top 2, in the World Cup once, and a couple of times in the Euros I think,) but never the winner. (Not since 1966 anyway!)

Is it nerves? Is it that they're so anxious to win that they keep making silly mistakes? Are they just not quite good enough? WHAT IS IT? Why do they keep getting so close, but just never manage to get the win?!

As I said, I am not bashing them, and they did well, and I am proud of them, but I just get so frustrated that they can't quite ever get the win!

Don't compare the women's game to the mens, they are different.

Remember that the FA banned women's football for 50 years.

XelaM · 21/07/2026 11:58

Twonewcats · 21/07/2026 10:45

It doesn't. The fact it was the third-place playoff and not the final proves the point.

🙄 Some people just want to continue to bang the same drum. Yes they lost in the semi-final. It happens. France (the favourites) also lost. That doesn't mean they are shit or not good enough.

Saying they are shit actually shows you don't know or understand football, as they are actually pretty good.

Coming 3rd out of 48 teams (having had to play more knockout games than any other England team) is a very good result.

The 6:4 score against France - in the 3rd place play-off match on Saturday tells a different story.

@GorgeousSpringtime

but they lost to Argentina and would lose to Spain so that poster is right - they aren’t good enough to win

Errr... ok 🥶 sorry I know the women have got better in recent years, but women's football is still an acquired taste. Not comparable to the men's

@XelaM, you believe that women's football is an acquired taste and not comparable to men's?

Really?

You seem to hold many ill-informed views.

France lost to Spain. Doesn't mean they are not good enough. It's football. It happens.

The strongest teams don't always win either.

It was at one stage

Ofcourse that had be stopped, hence the ban.

why do you think women’s football is an ‘acquired taste’?

why do you think women’s football is an ‘acquired taste’?

Because only a small minority of people watch it compared to men's football.

@XelaM

why do you think women’s football is an ‘acquired taste’?

It's not the same as the mens football at the moment.

The skill level and the speed is lower. That makes the game somewhat more frustrating to watch if you are really into the mens game.

I think within about 10 years the adult womens players will have had the same coaching as the men from an early age. That will close the skills gap.

I think the maybe 10% difference in speed and height between men and women will actually make the womens game more interesting than the mens if they retain the same pitch and goal size, as often the mens game feels very cramped with little space and the goalkeepers almost impossible to defeat in comparison to the womens game.

So the TLDR for me is that at the moment the mens game is more interesting to watch, but there is a possibility that will change in the future.

For me the prem and top level international mens football (champions league/world cup/euros) is where the interest is. I tolerate watching EFL because my home team is there, but the quality of football is quite obviously lower, and it gets a lot less entertaining as you move down the divisions.

XelaM · 21/07/2026 13:22

@GasPanic I agree the speed and skill level are much lower in woman's football. 😬 I just didn't want to say it as clearly there are a few fans on this thread.

I imagine at club level women's football to be even lower skilled, and people don't go to watch it.

DuncinToffee · 21/07/2026 13:27

Speed, strenght, yes.

Skill level not so much

I am a fan of womens football as well as mens

I appreciate them on their own merit.

If you don't like, fine, no need to justify it but you can just leave it at that.

GasPanic · 21/07/2026 13:33

Personally I think it is better to understand why something is the way it is, rather than pretend it is something it isn't. I don't think it does the womens game any favours doing that.

I guess for a lot of people who aren't interested in the particular characteristics of the mens game, or don't analyse the games closely or watch football regularly the womens game can be equally or more entertaining, but this is not for me. Lower leagues men football isn't for me either for the same reasons.

I think there are things that womens football does do better than the mens (team discipline, complaining to the ref, feigning injury etc) at the moment that I would like to see stamped out in the mens game, but you can see that sort of behaviour comes with trying to get every edge possible unless it is stamped on. It's more an issue with the regulations and their implementation than with the players.

I think the womens game is better celebrated for what it is and what it can be in the future, rather than what it isn't.

Now just imagine if women's football had been allowed to develop like the men's game.

I've never heard of this, but interesting read! 53K supporters for a local team is huge. Men's football has developed all over the world over and above women's though (although arguably the women's team is more popular in the US where men's 'soccer' is still not that popular)

That's all 🤷🏼‍♀️

Edited

Many countries banned women's football for most of the 20th century, that is a lot of catching up to do.

It gets nowhere near the same funding either.

The FA Womens Super League (WSL) only went professional in 2018, and WSL2 followed last season.

This from GasPanic is spot on imo

I think the womens game is better celebrated for what it is and what it can be in the future, rather than what it isn't.

It does prove they are good enough to win, one day soon. This is the best they have done since 1966.

You crack on bashing them though, you won't be changing my opinion.

Argentina are bullies and thugs and they cheated, (again.) THAT is why they 'won' against England.

England should have been in the final.

This. ^ Some people do love to bash England/The English, it's a hobby for some people. Some are English themselves. Which I find absolutely unfathomable.

CBA to waste oxygen on them to be honest. Even if the England mens team had won, certain people would still bash and berate them for it. "They weren't that good, they got lucky, the teams they were playing against were weak/shite/poor, anyone could have beaten <<insert any country here>> in that match, England were a 6 out of 10 at best. Yada yada bloody yada...."

Spare me. 🙄It's so tedious and boring.

Argentina have surely taken over as the most unpopular team in football. I wonder if there's any scots still proud of their argie shirts and flags Grin.

Scots blow with the wind with who they support, the "anyone but England" mantra is a bloody yawn fest now, but seeing some Scots support violent, thuggish, racist Argentina over their next door neighbour just shows how bad their inferioty complex is.....
