To think this is a step too far from the SNP?

The SNP have released a statement today saying they are “raising a glass” to Argentina.

Now I understand the whole football thing, anyone but England etc.

But Argentina killed Scottish troops in 1982. It’s too much.

I think their hatred of the English is rather pathetic.

It's just envy, they want a better team and they wish they were gracious like the English.

Ultravox · 15/07/2026 17:25

That is shocking. I am Scottish and I’m totally embarrassed by this (not that I voted for the fuckers)

SpaceRaccoon · 15/07/2026 17:36

I'm in Scotland and I find this Anyone But England shite so tedious and embarrassing, but this Argentina stuff from the SNP is beyond - mind you, not surprising, they're a shower of dicks.

I hope England do brilliantly.

ABE is generally said with wry good humour

Yes, football banter which is reflective of the sardonic nature of Scottish humour, and yet it's frequently met with ethno-nationalism and slurs in kind.

The umpteen threads about ABE on Mumsnet perfectly encapsulate what ABE is about. It's a tool for showing up humourless idiots who see everything through the prism of identity, and immediately respond to anything they perceive to be mocking theirs, even football-related banter, with typical flag-shagging nationalism.

It attracts morons like flies to shite.

This sums it up well. The whole point is the wind up and people are certainly wound up. Anyone I know who is ABE will shrug and say fair play if England win then forget about it. It's not that serious

Scottish, Irish, Welsh are far more at ease with their place on the world stage, they don't feel like they have anything to prove, they know they are small countries and don't feel like they have to compete in any meaningful way with larger ones. So long as they have the craic along the way that's all that matters. England's a different kettle of fish altogether.

Read some history. The Scots have many justifiable reasons to despise the English.

I'm in Scotland, and I'm fairly keen on history. It was a bunch of power hungry poshos on both sides, with ordinary men fighting and dying, again on both sides. It wasn't fecking Braveheart.

The Highland clearances were the real injustice, and that was done at the hands of the Scottish lairds.

Yes, I suggest that you should read some history.

The oppression was of the poor by the rich, on both sides of the border. The Highland Clearances were perpetrated by the Scottish Aristocracy. There were similar clearances in England, not that anyone knows or cares.

I could go on, but I suspect you'll stick to your beliefs. Carry on watching Braveheart if you must, but a closer and wider reading of real history will paint a much more complex picture of the Anglo-Scottish relationship.

The 'gracious English' are doing an awful lot of booing at the Argentinian national anthem right now!

tilypu · 15/07/2026 19:59

A Scotsman is classed as the "father of Argentine football".

That way predates the Falklands War.

Should we just ignore that?

PinkyFlamingo · 15/07/2026 14:19

It's exactly the same thing. The England have a German manager, a country who killed lots of British soldiers if you want to go down that route

It is not the same thing at all. Do you really want to die on that hill?

user281262 · 15/07/2026 20:18

What goes around comes around and one day we can stick two fingers up at the Scots. Then again, we will be pleased for them. We are not bitter!

We don’t need to go back to the Clearances or Culloden, you might be too young but those of us who remember the 1980s clearly have far more recent cause for complaint. And that’s before we get started on Brexit.

Well, the Argentinian team who produced a political banner after their win, won't have been fazed by the booing. Let's see what Fifa do about this banner. I don't live in hope.

Did Scottish soldiers not kill anyone? I know for a fact they did as my BIL served there

So their deaths don't count then? 🙄

Whataboutery at it's finest.

Bet they won't do anything, aren't they fans of the argies? England obviously lost but omg to a bunch of fouling arseholes who then hold a raggy bed sheet up with fake claims. Classy! Grin

Yes a bed sheet 😆 🤣 imagine if we had done the same saying the Falklands are still ours. Corrupt FIFA and their love for Athentina.

FIFA will do absolutely nothing. There's no money to be made in doing so.

RoadtoDundee · 16/07/2026 12:11

This is typical of nationalist parties. Instead of relying on the strength of their arguments they resort to dog whistle politics. They are no better than English nationalists. This is the sort of tactic used by Farage and his ilk.

This is the reason I really dislike nationalism of any sort. Taken to its ultimate resulted in the the atrocities in the Balkans, Italian Fascism and Nazi Germany. While at the focussing on football it's incredibly petty, but it's nasty. Everyone should read Blood and Belonging by Michael Igatieff.

The SNP are leaning heavily on the 'Brave Heart ' version of Scottish history where English are bad and Scots good. Many of those who respond to this dog whistle don't know Scottish history very well only the Tartan Tat version. Many Scots were up to their neck in slavery, colonialism and battles of the past. Using and holding grudges about events long in the past is poor politics to my mind.

Just as a side note I am Scottish, was born in here with Scottish parents but brought up in England as my parents relocated for work, so have an English accent. At work I had to put up with this sort of shite regularly. Mainly at a low level but particularly nasty when football was on. I didn't engage with them as I am not into football. Some said it was banter but there was a real nastiness to it

There's nothing wrong with being proud of being Scots, English, French or whatever or putting forward cogent arguments for independence but to resort this kind of crap is incredibly petty.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 16/07/2026 12:15

Absolutely vile but no surprise to any of us living in scotland. (And for clarity, before someone accuses me of being English, probably a "toarie", born here too).

Two years ago The National newspaper/comic which is the pro-Indy SNP supporting rag which the separatists love printed a front page article along the same lines.

I do hope you are not suggesting I am lying ?
It’s on their FB page and the staff are all wearing Argentina tops .

I drove past the highly salubrious watering hole called the "Stag and Garter" on Garscube Road yesterday. They had several Argentinian flags flying outside the pub. Speaks volumes about their clientele.

Verv · 16/07/2026 12:33

the SNP are baity shitmerchants - and as someone has already said, the strongest argument against independence.
