The SNP have released a statement today saying they are “raising a glass” to Argentina.

Now I understand the whole football thing, anyone but England etc.

But Argentina killed Scottish troops in 1982. It’s too much.

Yes, England used to have a "anyone but Germany" mentality but that was at least founded in footballing rivalry and since the 2006 WC that has reduced massively and relations are very cordial now. The feeling of some Scots has nothing to do with football - they really have to read some history books and get over Culloden.

I think this kind of thing is deliberate SNP policy as their best chance of winning an independence referendum is if the rest of the UK citizens vote for Scotland to leave. They are playing a long game and I couldn't despise them more.

The right to live somewhere is entirely different to their cultural identity.

My sister lives in England, she absolutely has the right to live there but will always be Scottish culturally.

Her English child lives in Scotland, again absolutely has the right to live here, absolutely remains English.

Scotland and England are really different. I can’t speak for Wales or Northern Ireland but I’m guessing their culture is pretty different too.

What's the problem with Scottish people choosing to support Argentina (or any other team) over England? Isn't it very common for geographically close teams to have a particularly strong rivalry (e.g. Newcastle/Sunderland)? And its either done in a spirit of fun, or at any rate well within the legit passions that football provokes.

I think it is quite a cheerful thing to read about Scottish people who support 'anyone but England'. And I don't find it offensive if the SNP goes along with it. (I'm English.)

Referring to the Argentinian war, as the OP did, is just daft. If that was a reason for Scotland not to show any support for Argentina, it would also be a reason for the England team to refuse to play them. But it ISN'T. The war ended decades ago and sport is a great way of rebuilding/expressing a normal peaceful relationship

You obviously haven't heard some of the stuff the Argentinian fans are coming out with.

The current Argentinian team chant about the Malvinas in the dressing room after matches. The current Vice President of Argentina put out a statement today about the match being about defeating the English pirates who invaded the Falklands (sic). So for them at least it isn’t a long-ago thing. And even among the ABE Scottish football supporters, there’s quite a split - many see supporting Argentina over England as a step too far (deaths of Scottish soldiers plus the general unpleasantness of the Argentine FA and team.) The SNP do make themselves look a bit dickish here.

From the outside the comments just looks bitter and spiteful, but then I don't think anywone woudl have expected anything less from them! I wonder how many members of the scottish government will find a 'need' to be in the US, either on government or SNP money, for the final. I mean, if you want to learn about independence a fact finding trip to a country that has recently celebrated 250 years of independence would make perfect sense ;)

No they haven't. I'm not sure how many international news papers or other international media you consume or how many people from other countries you talk to but Scotland is probably more respected and well regarded than England. Especially since Brexit.
