Ain't going to happen.
America has it that isn't exactly working out is it for one of the most violent Societies in the planet.

Explain Singapore and Japan then. It's not as simple as "But America...". There's no evidence it lowers crime rates, but there's no evidence it increases crime either.

Urgentbiscuitrequired · 14/07/2026 20:38

No. It isn't a deterrent. People either kill because they lose control or because they are psychopaths that think they will get away with it anyway.

Easy.

Economic success has removed the number one motive for crime - poverty.

More obedient societies.
I'll cut to the quick it's not going to be reinstated in the UK.
So put away the pitchforks and burning torches for this one.

Again, too simplified. Americas economy is better than ours.

My preference is not for the death penalty, so you can calm down.

Tryagain26 · 14/07/2026 20:47

Never, because if it is wrong to kill someone it is always wrong. State sanctioned murder is still murder.
Also practically mistakes have been made and can never be ruled out.

I think your question is pretty pointless tbh and I’m sure you would accept it is too.

You are not going to get an analysis of the social political cultural and economic differences between the uk and Japan that influence our crime levels, particularly when you have specified it can’t be too simple.

Maybe it’s too simple to say that our societies are so very different we have very little in common and there little in their crime presentation toolkit that we can apply to our society

Petrolitis · 14/07/2026 20:50

Anyone calling for the murder of citizens by the state are every bit as bad as murderers themselves. They too are giving in to their murderous instincts and baying for blood. No doubt they would be exactly the kind of person to attend an execution for entertainment and then pretend to be holier than thou whilst indulging their blood lust.

I'm perfectly calm.
I wasn't insinuating you where a rabid nut job.
Just reiterating it not going to change in the UK.
This is a topic thats been done to death so to speak.

igelkott2026 · 14/07/2026 20:51

On a societal level no - a civilised country does not execute its citizens.

However on a personal level I'd make exceptions for the Southport murderer, Wayne Couzens and Robert Black (who's dead now anyway). The crossbow murderer too. But fortunately for our civilisation it's not down to me.

britinnyc · 14/07/2026 20:54

No. I live in the U.S. I don’t agree with it on any shape or form for a whole host of reasons but it doesn’t deter crime and is extremely cost ineffective and the endless appeal process ties up valuable court resources. I also think is an easy way out, truly terrible criminals should have to live out their life in prison

The US has enormous wealth discrepancy and disparity.

Absolute poverty on a par with Third World nations coexisting with extreme wealth. Sheer scale of the economy is meaningless.

sanityisamyth · 14/07/2026 20:57

Yes. Costs too much to provide full board and lodging for long prison terms. Would then free up space for shorter sentences.

Japan and Singapore have it and they are peaceful.

Not all American states have it, the states without it aren't really any more peaceful or less violent than the ones with it.

I dont think its pointless to point out that "but America..." is not a good argument, in a debate, personally, but of course, you are free to ignore.

I think though that focusing on if its a deterant or not, as if that's all that matters, is pointless. There's a good argument, for example, in the fact we're about to release some very violent criminals into our society thanks to David Lammy. That may mean some innocent people are murdered as a direct result. So I would ask, is it better that a complete innocent is killed, or that a violent criminal who has already taken a life, is removed perminantly from society? I personally dont think there's a simple answer to that morally.

BIossomtoes · 14/07/2026 21:00

Absolutely not. If killing someone’s wrong it’s equally wrong if the state does it.

luckylavender · 14/07/2026 21:05

I’m vehemently against the death penalty

Thanks to David Lamy or thanks to the Tories for closing 23 prisons in 14 years

Exactly. The early release of prisoners started long before this government was elected.

Indeed, I would say both.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 14/07/2026 21:13

No. Plenty of countries have it. Move to one of them if you want to live that way.

Givemeachaitealatte · 14/07/2026 21:16

Against for all crimes. It is not a deterrent and we are not savages.

We should have a referendum on it. Give the people the choice.

The OP is posting articles that show the exact opposite of what she wanted, and you think people like her should decide on whether to kill people or not.
