AIBU to ask whether the death penalty should apply for certain crimes in the UK?

Because the topics got mixed up on my previous thread i thought id ask here, for certain types of crime in the uk, would you be either for or against the death penalty for certain crimes and why ?

How many mistakes being made are you okay with? Because there will always be miscarriages of justice or concerns about the safety of some verdicts (and corrupt police).

I used to be fervently against the death penalty. There is always a risk of miscarriages of justice, and because the whole process of a state cold bloodedly taking someone's life is chilling.

That was before I knew that men would rape babies.

Some people are beyond redemption. They can never be rehabilitated. Some crimes are so horrific the perpetrators have lost all claim to normal human rights, and I don't think society should have an obligation to continue to sustain their lives.

But what happens in that miscarriage of justice?

How many innocent people being killed by the government is acceptable collateral damage to you?

How many innocent people being killed by criminals is acceptable collateral damage to those who oppose the death penalty?

The death penalty doesn't work as a deterrent.

It doesn't save people from being killed by criminals in the first place.

So if you have the death penalty, you're only adding the deaths of convicted people on top. (And while in prison awaiting execution, they have nothing to lose by further violence).

Ok your child has been wrongly convicted. You're happy with them being put to death?

No of course I wouldn't be happy, but I wouldn't be happy if my child was murdered by a criminal that had been let out of prison either. So you have to weigh up which is the least worst option.

And that is very clear: An innocent person being murdered by the state. The suffering of the family of that innocent person who is murdered by the state.

By all means let life mean life, or have a system like the ones used in many countries where there are detention orders for public safety which run indefinitely (these are clinical and do not come under illegal indeterminate sentencing). But no state sanctioned murder of innocents.

You sound like you would be perfectly OK with the death penalty being applied to an innocent person 'because it would never happen to you'.

I would be quite happy if we had life sentences that meant life instead of the death penalty. Give the prisoners the option of voluntary euthanasia too.

OK, now I'm shocked. I'm agreeing with you on something. The difference between is may however be that I think assisted suicide should be available for everyone, not just prisoners.
