AIBU for feeling uncomfortable watching Zverev in the Wimbledon final?

AIBU to not like watching a domestic abuser in the Wimbledon final? I have not heard one comment from the BBC about Zverev’s domestic abuse.

It’s a misunderstanding of German law to say that Zverev was found guilty because he made a payment, though. It’s a neutral verdict wherein the defendant is considered neither innocent nor guilty; it’s a piece of German legislation for which there is no English equivalent. The payment was not made to the former girlfriend, it was essentially to cover the costs of the case, plus a small (by millionaire standards) charitable donation. I would assume that the fact the girlfriend allows their daughter to be taken abroad by Zverev is a reasonable indication that their co-parenting relationship is stable.

There is an Arsenal player too I have just learnt. It’s everywhere, absolutely everywhere. I saw a social media post about Conor McGregor, the amount of men defending him saying he was only convicted in a civil court and that doesn’t matter and he must be innocent. I hope his injury causes him lifelong pain. I’m fucking sick to death of all of it.

I recommend reading the detailed story of the first ex who accused Zverev of abuse. It rings true. (I'm not saying his second ex's accusation doesn't ring true, but there aren't anything like as many details or corroborating bits of evidence in the public domain.)

"Alleged" never proven, and he has joint custody of their child. If I had suffered domestic abuse I would not let that person within 100 miles of our child. So something doesn't add up.

However, he is clearly a successful tennis player and in 2020 was worth about $40m. That could be a tempting pay day for unscrupulous people to lay false allegations ... and I'm not saying they're false but I'm not saying they're real either.

I'm not saying he's guilty or that he's innocent because I wasn't in that room at the time but he has not been found guilty and therefore must be treated as innocent. If you feel uncomfortable then don't watch.

@XelaM, you keep banging on about Zverev “co-parenting amicably” with his ex-partner, as if this is proof that she likes and trusts him. Do you honestly think she has any choice? As you say, he hasn’t been convicted of anything in court, and unfortunately it takes a lot more than (multiple) accusations of violence to prevent a father from seeing his child. Her mother is likely doing what most abused women do, and keeping the peace in order to protect her child.
Zverev may well be a great father - his daughter is very young, she hasn’t done anything to piss him off yet. He’s not a safe person to be around adult women, or anyone who angers him.
What he did to that umpire goes way beyond ‘normal’ racquet abuse - he was completely out of control, in front of an audience of thousands.
I think it is tricky for the BBC - and other bodies - to know how to handle this sort of thing in their commentary. But the on court interviewer saying “You’re a gent, Sascha” after one of his wins was incredibly ill-judged, and I’d imagine very upsetting to the women who have been abused by him.

What's the point in having a legal system when the court of public opinion always thinks "there's no smoke without fire" and "why would women lie" (there have in fact been proved cases of malicious allegations by women - but people always still think the men must have been guilty regardless of whether they are acquitted so it's all a bit pointless and circular).

On one thing I agree though - Conor McGregor is absolutely vile 🤮
