AIBU to not like watching a domestic abuser in the Wimbledon final? I have not heard one comment from the BBC about Zverev’s domestic abuse.

I remember Jeff Tarango's wife slapping an umpire. It's the only thing he's remembered for.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 13/07/2026 10:49

They could refuse to show Z's shots - that would be quite amusing.

That and an extraordinary meltdown on court when he stormed off. A day or two earlier her had been playing doubles against Henman when Henman and partner (Bates, I think) were disqualified when Henman whacked a ball in anger which hit a ball girl. Tarango got right on his high horse then had his own episode the next time he played.

Definitely known for his epic meltdown rather than his tennis!

Absolutely no evidence was found against him by police!! False allegations by his ex.

What about the fact that Sinner was caught doping TWICE and never banned?!? What's that all about?!

Money possibly.
Tennis is one of the worst sports for dope testing. Fewer out of tournament tests comparative to other sports. Very weak.
No sponsor would want their high profile player banned.

She said afterwards that she did it because he'd be banned if he did 😂

He was fined by a Berlin court so..

However the ex-girlfriend who received this payment amicably co-parents their joint daughter with Zverev. I think that puts things in a slightly different light

Sinner also had the money to throw the best legal team possible at the case (he has more resources than the anti-doping body, certainly).

"Contamination" is a clever excuse because all he had to prove was that the substance could have got into his body via a different means to deliberately ingesting it. It's definitely true that his trainer could have used a cream that contained the banned substance, then transmitted it to Sinner via massage, without Sinner intentionally ingesting it. Legally, it means you can't prove beyond reasonable doubt that Sinner was doping.

Halep got a reduction in her doping ban for similar reasons.

But if you look at the facts of both cases, the circumstances leading to the contamination are really implausible. And in Sinner's case the speed with which his team had the contamination excuse ready almost seemed like it was prepared in advance - most cases of contamination take months of testing and retesting to determine where the contamination came from.

(Swiatek's ban was also reduced to virtually nothing due to contamination, but it was more plausible in her case as a different batch of the supplement she claimed was contaminated was also tested, and it was indeed found to be contaminated.)

Not proven I guess is the reason why. The tennis podcasts reference it quite frequently but always caveated with alleged. I guess the BBC doesn't want to get into any legal suits.

Not proven, but he paid one of them off out of court.......

And yet Tara Moore, a much lower ranked mixed race player got 4 years with a much more convincing story. It was cut in the end but does show they treat the stars differently.

How did I not know this about Zverev?!
I was cheering him on as I knew about Sinner's drug allegations. I love tennis but this has marred it now.

I didn't know either, about Zverev or the Sinner drugs allegations.

Bloody disappointing, and I love tennis too.

Fiendishandfiery · 13/07/2026 11:10

Sinners doping allegations were a minuscule quantity found in his urine, his explanation that he was treated by a physio for a minor injury with an ointment that inadvertently contained it, is believed by experts, it’s wholly credible and would have had no impact on his performance as it was such a small amount.

as for zverev I was also cheering him on yesterday and think he’s really attractive, then my daughter told me about the domestic abuse and it’s really fucking bad, so that changed my view.

the mother of his child says he pushed her against a wall and strangled her with two hands, she had trouble breathing and swallowing for several days after. The evidence was so compelling the German court saw no need for a trial and issued him a fine, which is they way they do things there, it was about 500k.

he then had the right to appeal, which he did, which forces it to trial, and during the trial he settled, stating it was due to their shared child. He paid about 200 odd k. Most of which went to the court.

she is not saying he abused her at any other time.

Then another ex said he regularly abused her, including strangling, which he also denies, and as she never reported to police there is nothing thay can be done.

yesterday watching him what I saw was a man with a red hot temper that he struggles to contain, so as much as it’s not proven, I beleive it.

but I’m not sure I beleive he’s the stereotypical abuser, dishing out regular beatings as he feels powerful when he does it . I think this is a man who has a temper he can’t control and when pushed in an argument or in stressful situations becomes violent.

i have an acquaintance who suffered domestic abuse, and it was constant basically, there was always another punch waiting for her, another strangulation, hair pulling or push down the stairs, I’d say she was attacked at a min every two weeks.

i know his ex said he was a regular abuser, but the mother of his child isn’t saying that. She’s saying one very serious incident. Which doesn’t make it better or worse, he should be in jail for it, but i suspect this is a man who loses control.

It's less that "they" treat stars differently and more that the stars have much, much more money to throw at the best legal teams and most watertight legal defenses. Swiatek's talked about how much money she had to spend on fighting her case - I can't remember the exact sum but someone like Moore just wouldn't have those funds.

From my understanding Moore's case was hampered by the fact that she couldn't get around the negligence aspect - she claimed she ingested a steroid via meat in a restaurant, but players who travel to South America are clearly warned that beef in those countries is likely to pose a doping risk.

TrixieFatell · 13/07/2026 11:14

Nobody seems to care if it's a man who is good at a sport. Different sport but look at McGregor who was found civilly liable for sexual assault yet had a big comeback in the UFC. Yes he failed to make the comeback he wanted but he would have still been paid a huge amount and had sponsorship dealings. I didn't watch the Wimbledon final yesterday, didn't have the appeal it usually does.

Same in music. Actually it's the same in life, these men just get on with their lives and their victims have to try and deal with the consequences.

XelaM · 13/07/2026 06:09

Sinner's story about why he failed doping tests TWICE is about as believable as the Russian athletes' "I accidentally took my grandpa's medicine" but of course he doesn't get banned whereas many others do. 🙄 I will never support the cheat.

The twice is just two tests a week apart showing the same contamination at different stages. It was well below an effective dose, which is presumably why it was possible to accept the account of cross-contamination via his coach. I'm inclined to find that account plausible because of the quantities involved.

For Iga Swiatek, whom other people have mentioned, there was clearly no fault. The manufacturers had more of the batch tested, and it was contaminated - presumably a shared assembly line. Very hard on her, since she was clearly shaken by the whole process.

Low quantity because he was trying to make sure it disappears from his system before they test him at the tournament. It's well-known that's it's a whole tactical/timing issue of when to take the substance so it disappears from your system in time. Doping enables you to train much harder, build more muscle quicker and have a much faster recovery time. It's not just done to be able to run fast at tournaments. In fact, the smart savvy athletes do everything possible to make the substance disappear before major competitions where they know they will get tested.

I personally don't find that explanation convincing. You only need minuscule amounts of many substances to have a huge effect. Think about the tiny weight of recreational drugs needed to get high. And while that amount may not have been effective at the time of the test, its peak effectiveness would have presumably been designed to be some time before the test (and the aim would have been to have it out of his system completely before in-tournament testing).

XelaM · 13/07/2026 11:47

Zverev and the mother of his kid co-parent their kid amicably and he has a great relationship with his daughter by all accounts (see photo).

People love to make up and exaggerate stories about successful beautiful people.

AIBU for feeling uncomfortable watching Zverev in the Wimbledon final?

The experts disagree with you, I’m unsure of your credentials, but all the experts who were consulted said due to the extreme minuscule amount, the fact the ointment was proven to be contaminated feel that it is hugely likely what he said happened happened.

i am only going on the investigations, but am happy for you to post your own and your credentials and correct.

The German system which, when there is compelling evidence there can be a penalty order without the need for a trial ... which he was given with a fine of £400k.

So he is guilty in German law.

I didn't watch it either.
Can I just change the subject slightly though?
Was that Andre Agassi commentating the other day? Andre, you're lovely, but what a boring voice.. I almost nodded o.. zzz

What he says is interesting but his delivery lilt and tone is awful and makes it really difficult to listen to him.

I believe the women. The backlash women get when they speak up against men and in particular famous men and sportsmen means they don't make allegations lightly.
I know a couple of pillars of the community who have got away with it because they've employed the services of a SHL. Nasty, violent domestic abusers but officially not guilty.
