To think that smoking looks really, really cool?

To start, I know it’s not, I know it’s dangerous, I know it stinks and is a horrid habit. I’m not going to start.

but equally….I’d bloody love to take up smoking 🤣

I just think it can look so chic, especially the skinny little European cigarettes.

I love the idea of sitting out with a glass of something, puffing on a little cigarette.

having a mid morning coffee outside a cafe on a cobbled street, cigarette in hand.

Or, the original ozempic…a cigarette and a can of Diet Coke of lunch.

like I said, I’m not going to start, I don’t like the smell and I’ve also been very vocal on my views on vaping.

but, at the grand old age of 40, there’s still something about it that I look at sometimes and think ‘god, she looks cool’

Think Caroline Besette in Love Story.

I'm with you on this, Op. I find the drifting smell of second hand smoke on a hot day very very sexy.

I love getting off a flight and smelling cigarette smoke in the sun. It's the smell of holidays.

In the rain in the UK not so much.

Tamtim · 12/07/2026 14:41

It just looks to me like people need to suck on a dummy, especially vaping. Pathetic and it stinks.

Any1ForTennis · 12/07/2026 14:45

The people where I live don't look glamourous when their smoking. More fingers on their nicotine stained, buckfast holding hands than teeth in their mouth!

Guess a well dressed beautiful sexy lady provocatively sucking on a cancer stick may appeal to some though.

Then there's the mess, ash and cigarette butts, both of which make me feel sick. I don't have a weak stomach I was nursing over 40 years and have seen some terrible things.

I have this aversion too, never known why but I feel physically repulsed by ash and butts. Even if it's on the floor around my feet!

Cool people can make anything look cool

either you have that cool thing about you or you don’t (my brother has it in bundles, myself well no, it’s hard to believe we are related 😆)

its not the cigarette it’s the person

MsGreying · 12/07/2026 15:13

Do you mind if I smoke?

Myblueclematis · 12/07/2026 15:36

When I was about 19 (late 1970s), I used to go out with a bloke who was a smoker, it wasn't that unusual back then for people to smoke and outnumber the non-smokers of which I was one.

He smoked those American More cigarettes, not sure if you can still get them and I found it hugely attractive whenever he lit a cigarette up plus he always wore Eau Sauvage which made him doubly attractive.

I'd hate it now, well apart from the Eau Sauvage, I still love that. 😆

Fifiesta · 12/07/2026 15:42

The smell is revolting, chucking cigarette buts, all over the shot is slovenly.

Ask a smoker to take a drag, then blow it out through a tissue, look at the dark mess that is poisoning their lungs, and ask yourself honestly if you still find it glamorous …

Plus even the ‘cool kids’ end up with multiple lip wrinkles far earlier than non-smokers - would you find having a mouth like a cats bottom attractive?

PinkMagpie · 12/07/2026 15:42

I enjoyed watching Love Story but all I could think about watching Carolyn chain smoke was, I bet she reeks!

Thepeopleversuswork · 12/07/2026 15:44

I mean it looked good on James Dean, Sophia Loren or or Uma Thurman. When I was a teenager all the cool kids did it. But that was then.

Most smokers these days look older than their years, usually have bad skin, clothes and either are overweight or haggard. Sorry to sound judgmental but nowadays it’s basically a signifier of poverty. So no, not any more, it makes you look like a poor addict who doesn’t have their shit together.

That’s interesting about the poverty - I’ve seen several threads on different parts of the internet where people have listed their opinions on what is considered ‘classy when rich, trashy when poor’ - maybe how I view smoking is similar to that.

Audrey Hepburn - LOOKS cool and chic
Waynetta Slob - very much not.

I’ve quit, 6 years now - but I agree it does look cool. Now I only smoke when I’m on holiday without the kids.

It probably is something that can be styled out better if you look young, beautiful and are well dressed.

But smokers don’t look like this: the vast majority of the people who I see smoking nowadays are old (50+) and not in great shape. Also honestly a person who hasn’t been able to master this addiction which is so universally known to be so bad for you and who is still spending money on it just comes across as stupid.

Whenever I see someone smoking I think “Really? Knowing what you know, why in God’s name are you choosing to do this?” Its similar to the way I would feel seeing someone smoking a crack pipe or shooting smack. Its utterly pointless and self destructive. Its expensive, it smells awful and unlike crack or smack it doesn’t even get you high.

maxslice · 12/07/2026 19:29

It doesn’t look cool. It looks ignorant and nasty. Find another way to look cool that won’t make you die.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 12/07/2026 19:35

It's such an easy shortcut trope for movies and drama's to show the "rebel", "misunderstood artistic genius" or "tortured soul" contemplating with a cigarette, that they still do it nowadays.

dressdrama26 · 12/07/2026 19:42

I used to think it was cool when I was 15/16 smoking Lambert & Butler behind the bike sheds at school to impress my crush. However at my ripe age of 41, not so much anymore. In fact I genuinely think it looks awful, on anyone.

CheeseWisely · 12/07/2026 19:46

I mean if you’re a 22 year old Kate Moss smoking a menthol vogue & sipping an espresso outside a chic Paris cafe then sure.

If you’re 63 year old Dave from Rotherham pulling on an L&B in the doorway of the bookies with a can of special brew in the other hand then less so.

I don't think it looks cool, I think it makes people look anxious and nervous, like nail biting
