Count Binface has a genuine chance against Nigel Farage!

Sounds crazy but…

None of the major parties are competing…

Farage won Clacton with 46% of the vote…

If the 54% united together to vote for Binface, we could have the most preposterous election outcome of all time!

I reckon this could get some genuine momentum… all the other parties would LOVE this result, and even if they didn’t actively campaign for it, would surely quietly be gunning for Binface to win.

Everyone will now be doing it, as we can see. It'll cost the taxpayers a fortune. It's distortion and manipulation of the democratic process at the very least.

I am hoping that this will prove to be a massive own goal for Reform/Farage and make others wary of making the same mistake.

It is how it works, yes, but I think triggering a by-election purely for political and personal ambition reasons is a step too far.

I do think there needs to be some set of boundaries around when this can be done, or it's going to happen all the time from now on.

I dunno, I think what's happening here is going to serve as a pretty effective deterrent. There's a model now for the other parties to stifle any impact.

Reform have now had to redirect resources and activists from the GM mayoral election later this month. It's having a wider effect that just this one self-inflicted election. They were never going to win GM but must have hoped for a strong showing in Burnham's backyard given the council election results. Now that's had to be deprioritised.

BIossomtoes · 09/07/2026 12:39

It’s massively backfired. That should give anyone considering it in the future pause for thought.

True - let's hope. That will probably only be the case if Binface wins though.

Go Binface!

Hmm I dont think that's necessarily so. Even in their best case scenario of a comfortable Farage win and a decent turnout, he and the party are going to spend weeks having the piss ripped. They'll use precious resources in Clapton not then available in one of the most significant regional elections in the country. That's all bad, and it could be much worse than that.

Apparently 13th August is the likely date.

Bin Day.

sittingonabeach · 09/07/2026 12:58

I think at the very least if someone steps down like Farage, then that person cannot stand again in the resulting by-election. They might be able to stand again at a later one but not immediately afterwards

I shouldn’t be finding this as funny as I am. I mean bin day is a nice joke but I laughed for 20 minutes and made people listen to how funny it was while I told them pretending it was my joke.

Proper cheering me up this is.

And now all the Reform activists have been called to Clacton to defend their Glorious Leader and away from Greater Manchester where they were previously hoping to take the Mayoralty vacated by Burnham.

He's frit of a bin.

And all the councillors who were elected and are "here for the people of X place" are rushing over there to support him and abandoning those councils...

Oh dear, I'm no fan of Farage but the bollocks buzzword bingo of calling everyone you disagree with is a fascist is tiresome.

Especially when you ask for a definition of fascism and they are unable to do so, but call you a fascist in return just for asking the question.

I’m not calling him a fascist because I disagree with him, I’m calling him a fascist because he is a fascist. He is the leader of an extreme far-right, ultranationalist party.

I despise Farage. He’s a piece of shit.

But if you’re going to call him a ‘fascist’ you’ll have to include with him the pro-Pal demonstrators and sympathisers, the Greens and much of the Labour Party and Libs’ membership.

On what basis do those groups meet the definitions of fascism? Top of the list of essential criteria for the role is 'far right'.
"So you've applied for the position of Fascist? Please outline your commitment to the ideology of the right..."
"Well actually, I vote Labour, but I do think the Greens have some good ideas about wealth redistribution..."
"We've a couple of racist lunatics to interview, so don't worry if you don't hear from us. Can you ask Mr Yaxley Lennon to step in on your way out.."

Uricon2 · 09/07/2026 13:54

I've posted this elsewhere but threads are proliferating like Clacton candidates today so apologies!

The 'British Democrat' candidate has an interesting political background for one so young.

Well no, because however much you might discern a streak of authoritarianism within those parties and movements, it's framed within an economically left wing program. Fascism, beyond its cultural elements like racism, hierarchy and militarism, specifically means a dictatorship of the right. If you wanted to similarly hurl loose and inaccurate epithets at them, I suppose you'd call them communists.

I also despise Farage and acknowledge the self-evident fact that he's a racist, but on balance I wouldn't call him a fascist because he hasn't said or done anything contrary to the primacy of the democratic system. You could reasonably call Trump a fascist for his actions like violently opposing the 2020 election result, massively consolidating presidential power at the expense of congress etc, but Farage no. At least not yet - that may change if he gets elected.

However on balance I tend to agree with opinions of various pp that he doesn't really want to get elected and has no intention of actually DOING the job of leading the country, let alone making it an even bigger job by acquiring more power. He's just a shit stirrer.

Being aggressively and unrepentantly antisemitic makes a person a fascist, in normal terms. You know, like that Austrian bloke who changed his name, got into power in Germany and went around harming people.

There is no accepted definition of fascism. The term may have emerged from the right but it’s not restricted to there. It’s perfectly possible to be a left wing fascist.

There is indeed an accepted definition of fascism. The first defining characteristic bring 'far right'. You cant just reinvent language to suit yourself.
The terms for the extreme end of the left continuum are Communist or Anarchist.
(Side note, no one calls us lefties Commies anymore I've noticed. I quite miss that.)

No, there isn’t. That’s just wrong.

In any event, the other accusation tossed around against Reform is ‘racist’. I have no problem with that as a general label.

But it’s equally applicable to rank antisemites, who include the ‘pro’-Palestinian movement, notably of the left.

I'll stick with the dictionary definition. All manner of problems are caused when people start appropriating a word used to describe one thing to describe the opposite. Look at all the fuss about the word woman.

ACynicalDad · 09/07/2026 14:34

If Binface wins I can see that ending Nige's political career and with it Reform, that would be an amazing achievement. GIven turnout is shit in by-elections it is not impossible. I want a head to head debate on TV, would be glorious. It's not what Farage was hoping for.

He won't actually win, but it will still be a great show.

I agree with you, but I was surprised to find that a number (albeit a minority) of the dictionaries quoted in that Wikipedia article don't actually include the adherence to right wing economics as a precondition for fascism. A few don't even say anything about economics at all but seem to just see it as a set of cultural attitudes.

Yes.

Or, another way of resolving this would be to say that you can't stand until the investigation is complete.
