AIBU
cats, yesterday outside my front door I have put in two lovely new flower beds, within less then 12 hours, two cats shits!
we are a end semi, they seem to love our garden!
we have tried cat alarms,
its making me dislike neighbours that own the cats, selfish to own a cat when they know damn well they are going to shit on someone else’s property.
I might just go let my dog take a dump outside their house!!!!!!

But we don't tend to pop next door to have a shit in their flower beds though do we?

No, but in the block of flats I used to live in and only recently moved from, we had youth piss all over the (indoor) stairwell, drug and fag ends, used gas bottles, vapes and the charred remnants of plastic things they brought in and then set fire to.

I'll take a cat poo in my (outdoor) flower bed any day.

Give me a feral cat over a feral youth any day too!

Cats are also one of the leading threats to wild bird populations worldwide.

No. Bird decline is due to habitat destruction and intensive farming.

CrossPurposes · 30/06/2026 13:53

Dogs have their issues too regarding wildlife. For example: www.gwct.org.uk/blogs/uplands-blog/2026/march/dog-walking-awareness-in-the-uplands/

YANBU

Our neighbour loudly proclaims at social events that she "doesnt do kitty litter as it is gross" and that she prefers it does its poos elsewhere.

[awkward glances exhanged all around as neighbours refrain from saying "yes but they fucking shit in our gardens!!"]

I went theough a period where I couldnt have any windows open because the cat would literally climb in. Guests arriving at my fromt door would comment on the stench of shit lingering (despite my cleaning up).

It only changed when I got a dog.

YankSplaining · 30/06/2026 13:58

YANBU. I love cats, but I live in the US, where around 90% of cats stay indoors. If I had random neighbor cats wandering onto my property and defecating on my grass, I wouldn’t like cats, either.

The smell is awful, maybe I should get a big male cat? Would that keep other cats away? 😂 or just invite lady cats over🫣

I have had the cat problem in the past, and things that worked for me were a) citrus peel left in the area where they poo b) soft spike beds in exposed borders c) Labradors chasing them .

I have had my most consistent success with the Labradors , but the others helped.

Weeellokthen · 30/06/2026 14:18

Love all animals but there is one big "mouser" that lives a few doors down. She wakes me up v early as she terrorises the birds. Frequently killing them, then, their corpse falls into the no-mans land behind my house and she doesn't even have the decency to either eat her prey or gift it to her owners 🙄

I live in the US, where around 90% of cats ARE FORCED TO stay indoors.

Fixed it for you. Given the choice, no cat would ‘stay’ indoors. It’s not natural.

I love cats but the dog that a did a huge shit at the bottom of my drive the other day can do one.

That’s an irresponsible dog owner.

Rather than being negative think of it as free fertiliser. Joking aside are you sure it’s cat poo. Cats generally bury their poo.

That’s what I was thinking. It could be fox poo.

LlynTegid · 30/06/2026 14:29

The neighbours do not own the cats, the cats own the neighbours.

I'd be upset in your shoes though.

DoggieNamechange · 30/06/2026 14:36

When you say that you have cat poo in your garden everyone on MN says it CANT be cat poo and must be a racoon/fox/zebra that found it's way into your garden. Even if you saw a cat curling one out on the middle of your lawn carrying a toilet roll and copy of The Sun.

As a pp said, I don't hate cats but cat owners do have a lot of cognitive dissidence about where their pets are crapping. Also hate it how they think it's cute to kill birds etc. Our garden became the local litter tray for a while and it was horrible when the kids were playing out. It seemed sorted when we got a dog though OP? Can you not send him out on patrol when they appear? Soon scared our local crappers off.

I agree it’s not natural. Sadly in the US I believe it’s still legal to declaw cats.

It would certainly keep other cats away after the turf wars were finished. It wouldn’t keep lady cats away as he’d be neutered. You’d also get left lovely little thank you gifts 😃

I believe it is. So cruel. I can’t get my head round the fact that US vets are prepared to do this.

Me neither nor that people actually think it’s acceptable to even contemplate it. Cruel is an understatement

Overthemoun · 30/06/2026 14:52

Put down garlic powder, citrus peel etc as they hate it. Some kind of pepper too? Maybe cayenne. Just change the habit and they’ll find somewhere else.

Mistymaglets · 30/06/2026 14:54

Sit in wait with a massive water pistol or a bucket of freezing water.

Maybe I need to send him out when I see one in the garden, however I think if he got hold of one it wouldn’t end well, then again, that’s nature, and like all the cat owners on here keep saying it’s cats doing what cats do, so maybe I should let my dog do what dogs do???? 🫣

YANBU

My dog only poos on walks (and i pick up), i then have to pick my neighbours cat sh*t up from my garden regularly.

I'm trying to clear my overgrown garden ready for planting and trying to be environmentally conscious about it, so laid cardboard with compost/ bark mulch on top. It is now one massive litter tray which stinks and as a result i have had to tell DD8 that she isn't allowed to play in her own garden. I will be clearing the rest with glyphosphate. I now understand why the other gardens are mostly paved over or abandoned.

There are no songbirds at all near my house and i live in a national park.

When i walk past one of the cat ladies houses the lane outside stinks of cat piss.

The local cats use everyone's wooden garden furniture as scratching posts.

Numbers should be heavily restricted and kept in the owners gardens, unless on a lead or with excellent recall!!

I do this, but just hold his collar for long enough to give the cat a head start, I'm hoping they'll learn not to come in, but the problem is next doors cat live with a dog, so I'm not particularly optimistic.

Okbyethen · 30/06/2026 14:59

I'm with you OP. I hate that it's just accepted that cats can shit wherever they want and the actual owners don't have to do deal with it but everyone else does. It's fucking bullshit.

Cats are cunts.
