AIBU to ask if I can report my neighbour's bright blue house?

I live in a terraced house. My neighbours have painted the back of their house bright blue (think swimming pool blue / like the Mikanos blue). It is horrible and looms over my garden. It’s really going to spoil my enjoyment of my space to have to look at this every day. I spoke to the wife earlier this morning and said it was not to my taste and would they consider changing and she said ‘the beige of your house isn’t to my taste but it’s your house. This is my house.’ And shut the door in my face. WIBU to report them to the council? Can I even do so? Surely you can’t just paint any offensive colour and expect neighbours to live alongside it?

The entitled rich twats in the New Town of Edinburgh are something to behold. They seem to think they are a special class, exempt from normal things. They moaned endlessly about the black bins everyone in the city had, thinking they were too special. There is a really nice centuries old pub in the New Town with a garden. The entitled rich twats made them have to close their garden to customers at 9pm even on weekends. Why buy next to a pub and then moan about pub noise?

I had one of them come running out of his townhouse, complaining and taking photos of me for locking up my bike in sight of his window.

They are something to behold. I was told it was illegal to chain your bike to railings in Newtown and the council will remove. Im nog even sure if that’s true but I used to cycle along and leave the bike somewhere less salubrious and walk back

The neighbour across the road from me destroyed the look of a lovely 1930s house - ripping out all the original features and then painted the outside an ugly grey. I’d rather the blue. But I do understand where you’re coming from.

Now that should be a crime! If you are on Instagram look up #Weeping1930shouses.

I misread this as my neighbours’ bright blue horse - thought it was going to be a post about whether it was ok to spray paint their pet horse..

I would say this is the colour though their window sills and edgings are in white.

That top image should be called Tardis blue.

Just don't look at it...

This lierally the funniest thing I've ever seen on MN. Thank you for the laughs🤣🤣

Sennelier1 · 02/07/2026 13:51

Not the walls, but we have our double frontdoor and all the window frames of our house in deep turquoise-blue. Unusual in our street, nearly all of the houses are over 100 years old. When we bought the house in 1988 the woodwork was a pale and peeling grey. In the beginning neighbours asked if the turquoise maybe was just a primer? Nope, this is the colour we chose 😊 We've used it for 35 years now. After a while several neighbours began to use other paints than grey, white and beige too! You never can do good for everybody, but a splash of colour goes a long way to brighten your day ❣️

Loud. Drinks beer day and night. Shouts at the children when they are playing in the garden. Wears clothes with holes in even though they live in a £500k house. Odd.

Reading you comments, you have to be the most judgmental person I have have come across on MN. Your arrogance is staggering,

ScruffMuffin · 02/07/2026 21:10

I've had a bad day, but came back to read more comments and the OP. The innocent, inanimate wall LOOMS over her garden! Yet again, this thread raised a smile.

The OP would probably hate my new shed! (Excuse the tools/ general crap... we're still putting up shelves inside.)

ScruffMuffin · 02/07/2026 21:14

Not sure that worked...

If they own the house they can do what the hell they want .. and good on her for shutting the door in your face id of done the same Mr and Mrs beige.

knit1purl1 · 05/07/2026 13:08

Only occasionally post on MN but delighted to have the chance to say OP is misguided in making this an issue. Best advice is don’t fall out with your neighbors if you can possibly avoid it. Has to be really awful behaviour before it is worth the grief.
One of the joys of having a home is making it to your own taste. Everyone won’t like the same things. For everyone who loathes a higgeldy piggldey overgrown cottage garden there’s another who’ll hate an AstroTurfed minimalist arrangement.
Maybe shift any seating so it doesn’t face the blue wall as much? Then enjoy your own space & be polite to your neighbours who probably really love their choice of colour.

We are in London! Not a posh part but obviously everywhere in London is expensive!! I don’t want to live near an eyesore.

Move then. Your neighbour will be relieved.

Shutting the door on you proves that they aren’t ok. Barely civil and tone deaf. So yes, I’d try to double the height of the fence with some trellis and grow honeysuckle or jasmine etc on it. Or get a trough the length of the fence and fill it with the kind of bamboo that grows incredibly tall, quite fast.

explain you are colour sensitive. In this zeitgeist you’ll have to frame it as ND disability you have to struggle with and guilt trip them into civility. Tell them intense colour gives you anxiety. Then they won’t feel entitled to shut the door in your face.

People like you are what's wrong with the country.

Aslana · Yesterday 17:27

That is unecessarily rude.
