Don’t know if this really AIBU or a question!
AIBU to think that shorts have become way too short ?
I have seen a LOT of girls in shorts today - with their bum cheeks hanging out the bottom ! Personally I wouldn’t let my daughter out like that. And I wouldn’t were them myself (I would give everyone nightmares !).
so what’s the consensus on bums hanging out of shorts ?

They have been. A group cycle through quite a few cities and towns every year. They are wherever they want to be. It is all about intent.

Nudists, most of whom are male, are allowed to present in public naked without batting an eye, as long as their "intent" isn't to distress and alarm. Doesn't matter how anyone else perceives it.

The Naked Rambler wasn't allowed to go naked in public, even though there doesn't appear to be any evidence of intent to cause distress or alarm.

I don't have any issue with shorts or miniskirts, I like miniskirts myself.

I agree about the double standard. I think bum-showing shorts are gross and I don't want to see anyone topless unless at the beach but it's very wrong for only women to be criticised for stuff like that & not men.

I’m just jealous they have the figure for it! But seriously a local girls secondary school has obviously agreed (quite rightly) that black shorts should be part of the school uniform. All good, apart from the fact the girls all wore these bum shorts. Disturbing. All under 16.

But for the current generation, there isnt much the generations before havent already done (especially GenX of which I count myself a proud member!) so they either have to dial it right back in a Saffy kind of way or go even more extreme.

It actually is legal here for women to be publicly topless. It might still be more likely to be judged but it is legal.

We get those walking down the high street for "Pride" along with men showing off a load of other kinks to the children bought out to watch by their parents (leather animal ears and snouts with studs, etc). That worries me more than girls wearing what is in the shops.

In all likelihood, yes. Or, it will have gone the other way, and they'll be complaining about everyone dressing like their great grandmothers (which is, by the way, something that happened when prairie style dresses were all the rage).

What women are wearing shows no sign of ceasing to be a conversation topic. It seems women no matter what attitudes may have changed on the surface, the female appearance is public property to be commented upon, an indicator of moral values and the state of the nation. However much we dress up the modern version with comments about the 'male gaze', it's still fundamentally the same old story. What women wear is still given far too much importance.

I totally agree. This was a rock festival and there was definitely no need for it to be on display to everyone.

It is indeed disturbing that young women have to take special steps to stop the pervs drooling over them. Imagine if we held men responsible for their actions instead of expecting women and girls to have to change their behaviour.

I think very revealing clothes are tacky, no matter what the actual garment. When I was young I had an incredible ballet-dancer's body but I never dressed in such tiny clothes. I was always aware that it looked cheap and desperate. I didn't dress like a nun, but I certainly didn't reveal my bum, breasts, and midriff.

If people want to look cheap, that's up to them. They have no style, imo.

I do think that thong bikinis and very tiny string bikinis should be banned at public pools. It's a matter of public decency when it comes to fully naked bums in thong bottoms. And some of those string bikinis are just a few cm away from full nudity.

The fact that people are showing off their bum cheeks comes as no surprise to me, given the ever-decreasing clothing sizes of the last 15-20 years.

I think it's really sad that women's bodies seem to be more sexualised and objectified than ever before, and clothing fashions are smaller than ever. It's become the norm for breasts to be at least half-out, plus midriff out, plus short and/or tight bottoms, plus stripper heels. I came of age in the early Nineties, which was a much more covered-up decade, but I think we are in an anti-feminist era and all the tiny clothing trends reflect that. Plus social media and filters that make people look perfect with big boobs and flawless skin all over etc. I think it's a crying shame for young women today.

I mean, Pride festivals tend to be pretty alternative. For that reason I don't think I'd take a kid to one. They're just not family-friendly.

Not really, if they want to wear revealing stuff then that’s up to them.

If by ‘cheap’ you mean ‘tarty’ then that’s on the men to control themselves and stop objectifying women. Perhaps parents could look at teaching boys how to avoid raping and harassing girls rather than teaching the girls that they are asking for trouble with the way they dress.

That's what I don't understand about people wearing very revealing clothing. Apart from looking unstylish and inelegant, you can't control who's looking at you or how they'll act. Fabulous if some lovely young Adonis starts talking to you and invites you out for dinner, but how do the sexy dressers cope with the leering and the sexual remarks and the vague sense of threat from gross pervs?

By "cheap" I mean unstylish and inelegant. I hadn't even got round to thinking about men perving. But see above.

Edit: As I said, if people want to go around dressed the way we're discussing, that's up to them. I said that in my post. But I think it's unflattering. I think a little more clothing can actually enhance your figure more than just letting it all hang out. For example, people often look slimmer in clothes that fit properly rather than really tight ones, like these shorts. And if you have more on than just tiny clothes, you can use clothing to give the impression of even proportions, if you're short-waisted or something, like me. It's a bit hard to have your clothes working to flatter you if your clothes are tiny!

Ironic isn’t it that female cheerleaders, gymnasts etc are expected to wear less clothes than their male counterparts all in the name of sport but when they choose to wear less clothes they get called all sorts of names. How inelegant of them.

Same in school too. My daughter has to wear a girls PE kit which has a tighter top (can’t wear the boys as the girls has the Velcro for the netball positions) and a skort which is shorter than the boys PE shorts.

In sports and school it’s fine for girls to wear clothes designed to look more attractive to males but when they choose to themselves…..

I honestly don't know what I think about this.
Generally speaking it doesn't really cause me to think anything much.
But....as a pp said, you need to ask "why?"
It's like the age old question of whether you would wear make up and 'do' your hair if you were alone on a desert island.
I do know that I was really quite horrified to see a group of young women wearing bum hanging out shorts in Marrakech.
Where is the line between not wanting to be seen as a sex object yet wanting the freedom to dress in a revealing way, and wanting to wear whatever the hell you want yet not respecting others wish to not see it all?
So interesting really.
For me I suppose it's all about being appropriate to the place and occasion as much as anything.

There was a beach volleyball team that refused to wear the tiny uniforms and advocated for less sexy ones instead.

Oh God, I remember the Chinese female diving team's costumes in the last Olympics. Cheeks for days! And some of the ice skaters in the last Olympics wore thong bottoms. There are a LOT of naked butts on our screens during certain sporting events these days. I thoroughly disapprove, I think society should have higher standards, but the world likes it. Actually, the skaters have decency rules about the costumes, but some skaters just ignore it. And they are not penalised for it, presumably because the male executives like it.

We don't get much choice because they do a slow parade through the high street every year. That is the point I am making, if that is what used to be classed "alternative" and we now let those kinks be shown off on the high street to great fanfare, what difference does it really make to have a few girls following fashion on that same high street?

At our secondary, girls can either wear the fitted top and skort, or the boxy shirt and shorts that the boys get.
