Bums hanging out of the bottom of teeny tiny shorts

Don’t know if this really AIBU or a question!
AIBU to think that shorts have become way too short ?
I have seen a LOT of girls in shorts today - with their bum cheeks hanging out the bottom ! Personally I wouldn’t let my daughter out like that. And I wouldn’t were them myself (I would give everyone nightmares !).
so what’s the consensus on bums hanging out of shorts ?

The thing is though, if this was fat hairy builder Dave with his butt cheeks on display you can bet everyone would be calling it grim and saying he should cover up. I really dont think people would be defending his right to wear what he wants!

A lot of places have rules around men being topless in the summer months. Its not allowed in many places. But there's nothing "private" about mens chests so why do we need that rule? Because people find it gross!

Oh but if its young attractive women its ok? Well yes, no men are going to complain about it are they!

But there's nothing "private" about mens chests so why do we need that rule?

  • Arguably it's illogical women's breasts are seen as private but not men's chests. Both male & female nipples can be sexually sensitive, men's pecs are also secondary sexual characteristics.

I thought we’d moved to a place where women support each other more, but reading this feels like that’s still not always the case.

Come on! Supporting each other doesn't mean condoning indecent showing of bums...!

Why does it bother you and how does it impact you? Does it bother me? No - i have shorts which are, short. Would i let my 12 year old use it - no, shes too young.

Ayecollyflower · 30/06/2026 06:08

Agree with all the criticisms, but I'm sure people would have said the same about mini-skirts sixty years ago.

By the way, do these kind of shorts have a name?

Perhaps it offends public decency

an offence of Public decency is not the same MN pearl clutching

Well no, they didn't, because we didn't go around showing our backsides when we wore miniskirts.

Lugol · 30/06/2026 06:47

For all those posters saying it's not supportive to dislike this trend for young girls having theirs arses hanging out, are you not bothered that it's adult men who are gawping at them?

I've seen it driving through town, men craning their necks in their cars to leer at young girls dressed like this.

We are talking young girls 13/14/15 locally who dress like this.

It's not just clothing it's highly sexualised clothing for the male gaze and it's not appropriate any more than bare chested men in the street is.

It's not 'unfeminist' to not give the patriarchy everything they want.

Women supporting women is largely a myth anyway.

However people are saying it is not your place to condone or condemn someone’s choice of how they dress. Close your eyes, look away if you can’t handle people going about their business.

I agree. However if a man or woman wears something that offends your delicate sensibilities, look away.

Or perhaps stop focussing on the choices of strangers that have no impact on you.

I really don’t get why people seem to think that others should stop doing something that offends them personally.

Many people offend me in some way but I handle that by taking as little notice of others as possible and accepting that, just because I might have a reaction to something, it’s not up to them to stop doing it just because I don’t like it

CelestialCandyfloss · 30/06/2026 08:31

I mean, I used to wear ripped fishnets and hotpants in the 90's when I was an indie teenager, so who am I to judge?! 😂

MyPurpleHeart · 30/06/2026 09:08

HumberSquid · 29/06/2026 10:56

Is it ok for men to wear whatever they want too? Even if they decide they'd like to share those parts of their bodies with the general public?

Where did you get that from? Are you okay? Do you need a glass of water and a sit down?

We are talking about high cut shorts, not much different to wearing a thong bikini on the beach. All very legal and above board

A man walking around with his cock out is indecent exposure and not legal.

Its disappointing that I have to explain that to you.

HelenaWilson · 30/06/2026 09:23

How old are you HelenaWilson?**

Old enough to have worn a mini skirt in the 1960s.

Rocknrollstar · 30/06/2026 09:42

Doesn’t anyone on here remember being young? My skirts were as short as I could make them. And I wore hot pants. These girls feel confident in their bodies. Why are people so quick to judge?

BeSpoonyMintShark · 30/06/2026 09:54

People shouldn't have their arse hanging out, male or female.

I was at a seaside town a couple of weeks ago, strolling along the pier there was a teenaged girl who at first glance from the back looked like she was naked from the waist down because she was leaning over the railing crabbing.

It was only when she straightened up you could see she was wearing very, very short shorts that were too small for her.

Leaving aside the indecent and unflattering clothes, you could see the massive sunburn with white bits from her skin creases which must have caused her a lot of pain!

We aren't talking miniskirts and hotpants. We're talking stuff with literally at least half of the arse out; I've seen full arse out. A G string with a belt with a couple of inches of fringe at the top that barely hit the top of the fully exposed crack. And it wasn't a one off. It's an obvious fashion. The arse really might as well have been fully naked. And it's not anywhere near a beach or a swimming pool. It's just in a big city centre. Shops, cafes, pubs, cinemas, theatres.

Did you really see much of that in your youth?

Can anyone actually dig out a photo of a 60s miniskirt that actually shows the wearer’s bum?

No. I'm in my 50s and people didn't show their bare bum in public in the past. That's a more recent thing.

missipop · 30/06/2026 10:09

Widely varying views on here as you’d expect.

I don’t like the fashion, not because I think it’s gross or disgusts me but because like many others I think it attracts keen attention from men of all ages.

While I generally support the view that women and young girls should be allowed to dress as they please, it’s just a fact that men will be drawn to this obvious display of sexuality. It’s also a fact that rightly or wrongly, it will give the message to some men that these girls are available in some way and are in fact trying to attract them. This does NOT excuse men’s behaviour in any way whatsoever, but it does increase the risks for those dressing like this, particularly in more vulnerable situations.

Which is why I would be discussing the topic with my daughters to try to educate them in order to increase their awareness and help them make safe choices.

Safe choices? No such thing. And clothing is irrelevant.

That conversation would not have protected me from being raped at 15 (I was wearing jeans and a jumper).

And how long were you staring at this person while being close enough to see her sunburn? How odd
