Bums hanging out of the bottom of teeny tiny shorts

Don’t know if this really AIBU or a question!
AIBU to think that shorts have become way too short ?
I have seen a LOT of girls in shorts today - with their bum cheeks hanging out the bottom ! Personally I wouldn’t let my daughter out like that. And I wouldn’t were them myself (I would give everyone nightmares !).
so what’s the consensus on bums hanging out of shorts ?

Don’t think right of expression means flaunting your backside in public!

If it’s not contravening any laws and it’s just out and about, you don’t get to lay down standards for others though

So… you have reported to the police in the past @Allseeingallknowing ? If against public decency

Bluedenimdoglover · 29/06/2026 21:30

It's another awful fashion fad. Personally I can't bear bum cracks showing on obese men.there was one on a mobility scooter in front of me. In the gap between the backrest and the seat was a massive bum crack on view. Gross.

I’ve only seen one instance of this. I did think it looked disgusting, as did others who saw her. I was answering the question about why people thought they had the right to police the way people dressed. It wasn’t addressed to me personally.
I was merely saying why they might react as they did.

Ok so you saw a crime and you didn’t report?

Have you always been so over involved in the clothing choices of others?

Good point. But had time to have a good bitch with others about it

Only as much as anyone on this thread. I do find people and their choices interesting though. I would not have allowed my daughter to dress in such a vulgar and provocative way. Fortunately she didn’t want to, and neither did her daughters. They all dress nicely and decently

If the Police don’t attend burglaries etc they’re not going to do anything about a girl flashing her arse! I didn’t say it offended MY decency, I said that’s why others may react as they do. I just thought it was a vulgar and indecent sight. I’m sure plenty conveyed the same to her, not that she cared!

It’s only a crime if it offended public decency- how many more times do I have to say the girl didn’t offend me in a criminal way, she might have other people. Disgusted ,certainly.

AngelWithAHauntedHeart · 29/06/2026 22:04

When I was in my early 20s the craze was for tweens to wear thongs pulled above their jeans.
i worked in a supermarket and the amount of families that would come in with kids dressed like that. There’s no way my 12/13 year old would be let out the house like that. Just gross 🤮🤮

PancakeCloud · 28/06/2026 20:43

If you don’t like it, don’t look.

So are you saying if you do like it you’re free to look at all the girls bum cheeks?

Girls today are very uninhibited I’ll give them that.

Allseeingallknowing · 29/06/2026 22:21

ExtraOnions · 28/06/2026 20:48

Good for them, if only I had the body and the youth.

Young women have been pushing these kind of boundaries since Mary Quant gave us the miniskirt

You’d be happy with your daughter going out like that?

BunnyLake · 29/06/2026 22:32

I guess the ones who approve also enjoy the hairy arse crack look so beloved of the out of condition men. 😬 or is the exposed bum look only okay if you’re female, young and lithe?

I don’t approve of it but I’m a seasoned pearl clutcher anyway 😁 and the hairy arse crack is just 🤢

You were the one mentioning public decency as a way to justify policing people’s clothing,

I am genuinely concerned how some people get through day to day life if they devote so much wrath to an issue that can be sorted by looking away and minding their own business

I'm in my 60s as well, and no one showed their bum cheeks.

You clearly never met my Aunt Beryl!

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 29/06/2026 23:12

You clearly never met my Aunt Beryl!

In the late 60's my Great Grandma said to my mother, then my fathers newly engaged fiance "Did you get that skirt on instalments?" my mother said "no, why?" and she said "Because I was wondering when they were sending you the other half"!

I have seen photos and the skirt wasnt even that short but GGma was born during the Victorian era!

The point I am making is that people who are wearing this generally don't care - everyone here bitching about some of them not having the "right figure" for them and that they must be upset that "people on the internet are bitching about them" - really? Do people really think people will be so sad to learn that judgemental prudes they never met don't like the way they look? Pfft. Some of you clearly have had very strict rules on your own joy. It is so boring to see the same worn arguments about everything women do to make themselves cool, feel good, comfortable etc etc being only FOR MEN.

Some of you clearly have had very strict rules on your own joy.

  • If we're talking about clothes showing bums, surely this is silly. Disapproving of that isn't joyless.

And it seems disingenuous to say young women wearing skimpy clothes has nothing to do with appealing to men.

KeepPumping · 29/06/2026 20:11

So the solution is for more people to dress like porn stars?

No, of course nor! I don't agree with this bum-exposing trend at all.

I am 58. If I had a bum that looked good hanging out of teeny tiny shorts I would do it. Sadly if I did people would think I had a growth on the back of my knees.

If they have it let them flaunt it. Why, as women, do we feel it is okay to criticise other women!

Why, as women, do we feel it is okay to criticise other women!

  • I don't get this at all. Feminism doesn't mean uncritically accepting anything a woman does. It means women have equal rights & responsibilities.

Would you say, 'Why do men feel they can criticise other men?' Why should women only speak positively, even about ridiculous stuff like exposing your bum, just because other women are doing it??

I’m torn between people should wear what they want and sod the male gaze and we shouldn’t be showing off our bits for men to ogle!

Male gaze aside though, showing your bum is gross. Gross for either sex.

Jane379 · 30/06/2026 03:52

rumblegrumble · 28/06/2026 21:40

I went to an all girl school and rolled up my skirt. I still wear clothes I think make me look nice, even when I know I'll only be with other women. I am really uncomfortable with accusation that every woman not wearing a baggy top, loose trousers and sensible shoes must be trying to attract the 'male gaze'. Maybe they think they look good, maybe they've been working out hard and want to show off a body they're proud of (body positivity, anyone?), maybe they're just copying their friends, maybe they're just really bloody hot and want to wear as few clothes as possible. I spend precisely no time wondering what men might think of me when I choose outfits. Nor when I dye my hair, go to the gym, put on a bikini, remove my body hair - or even wear high heels. The only women I ever hear talking about the 'male gaze' are women attacking other women and claiming they are trying to attract sexual attention. And presumably if they get sexually assaulted, it's at least partly their fault for wearing clothes men might think they look nice in. If they'd been wearing a nice comfortable, practical outfit of jumper, jeans and trainers, they wouldn't have attracted the 'male gaze', after all...

Terrifying.

I don't want to see too much of ANY person. Male or female. Not because I think they're asking for sex, because it looks dirty and sweaty and smelly and I don't want to be near other people's dirt, sweat or smell. Especially if they're sitting somewhere I then want to sit! I would object equally to a man's bottom poking out, and not because I thought he was dressing for the 'female gaze', nor because I was uncomfortably aroused or thought I might sexually assault him. I think social norms about acceptable dress is fine, I think claiming woman must only be wearing shorts because they're trying to attract men is revolting. The same was said about mini skirts. The same was said about calf-length skirts, and about showing ankles, and hair. That way burkhas lie - and that really is dressing for the male gaze.

Not the only reason, but surely stuff like miniskirts etc is at least partly to do with attracting men? This isn't bad imo unless it crosses over into showing bum.

But don't all people, whatever sex, think (if they're looking for a partner or date that is) at least bit about whether their clothes will attract the people they want to attract? As I said upthread , straight women and gay men are more likely to wear skimpy clothes partly because they're trying to attract men, and men tend to be more visually focused on average. Straight men aren't as likely to wear very revealing clothing for the reverse reason.
