Kids screaming in the garden behind ours

As we all know the heat has been unbearable this week.

Temperatures have dropped sharply over the last hour or so here, we have a huge storm rolling in but while it’s cool and breezy, I’ve opened the windows to let some air into the house.

The kids in the house behind us are screaming. Not the type of screaming laughter that’s bearable, but just screaming. It’s unbelievable. I wanted a nice calm evening after a few rubbish days and they’re making it impossible to relax. I don’t want to shut the windows because we need some air in the house.

AIBU to scream back at them?

I feel for you. Hopefully they’ll be inside soon.

ConverselyAttired · 25/06/2026 19:48

We are all at the end of our tether (I'm in Wiltshire) but the kids here have been cooped up at home for 2 days with working parents so YAB a little bit U. It's only now cool enough to play in gardens here.

Whack on some music or something to drown them out.

dadtoateen · 25/06/2026 19:48

Jesus, how dare kids enjoy their private garden to do kids stuff….!!

ACatNamedRobin · 25/06/2026 19:50

This is the best idea!
On here they're fully reasonable and you're the devil incarnate for having a problem with them...

So surely doing it back at them is perfectly fine too 😉

Its not though is it? Not fun playing. Full on screaming.
Glad I don’t live near you if you think that is OK.

enjoying is laughter, a few shrieks, constant screaming is not just doing kids stuff. Mine are young adults now but they’d have had one warning stop screaming or you’re coming in, and then i’d have brought them in. Because surprise surprise, there are other people who want to enjoy their gardens, or open their windows and kids screaming is blooming annoying.

Inevergotthatfar · 25/06/2026 19:56

Cut them a bit of slack this week.

takealettermsjones · 25/06/2026 19:57

I'm sure their parents are hating it far more than you are 😂

It's the heat, innit.

concertinacornflake · 25/06/2026 19:58

If they don't normally do this, I'd assume it's a bad day all round. It's no fun, would be quite funny to scream back!

imtootiredforthis · 25/06/2026 20:15

They’re still going.

If it was shrieks of laughter it would be different but it’s just constant “I had that first!!!!”, “no I had it first!!!” “AHHHHH” “AHHHHHHH” “I HATE YOU!” “I HATE YOU MORE!”

Just shut the fuck up!!

Why? Genuinely? We all feel like screaming and making everyone else as miserable as we feel, but we can’t

You're an adult, it's pretty embarrassing to be unable to control your screaming as an adult!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/06/2026 20:24

We’ve got worse than that

Agree.

My toddler even knows that if she starts that nonsense she comes straight back in (often over my shoulder). I think it’s more about parents not wanting to deal with it and shoving them outside for their own peace and quiet. It’s anti social as far as I’m concerned. The fact people condone this behaviour when it ruins other people’s enjoyment of being outside is baffling to me.

Normal child’s play, chatting, laughter etc is joyous though. No one is entitled to complete silence as kids do need outdoor play.

Right, but they're kids who are learning to emotionally self regulate. The heat is turning even the most well behaved kids absolutely feral. It just makes everyone irritable. Over soon though hopefully!

Where are their parents to model correct regulation? Abandoning them in the garden to fight and scream to others misery isn’t teaching them anything. If you’re in the garden you have to learn to behave appropriately or you go inside.

She’s not remotely unreasonable. Kids can play outside without screeching and squawking. It’s not necessary.

bigplate · 25/06/2026 20:30

I find it really interesting to understand different time periods' attitudes towards children.

There's been a marked change, I think, since Covid, during which children's varying needs were treated as very secondary to adult concerns. I now see children being viewed and reported more and more as a nuisance and a disruption to adults' lives.

I find this sad and concerning.

How does being allowed to make whatever noise you please teach you to self regulate?

They are screaming at each other. I can hear them from my living room.

Clearly...they have not yet learnt it.
