Did my DH’s comments to a stranger cross the line?

Local retail park - there’s a gym by the car park. Walking back to the car earlier, DH makes conversation with a man (early/mid 20’s I guess) and says he’s in good shape (he had a vest on and was muscly) and that he wouldn’t trust him around me. Jokey tone, the guy laughed. He then said ‘she’d eat you alive, son. She’d probably teach you a thing or two’, again he laughed and we carried on walking.

DH is a bit of a cheeky chappy and always makes conversation with strangers, but I felt this was a bit off.

Is he implying you're not to be trusted or that this man looked like a rapist? I don't find either version funny, both are insulting. I hope this didn't really happen, if it did your husband should stay away from the general public as he can't be trusted not to make inappropriate "jokes".

Are any of these weird conversations actually true? We’ve had the waiter one, the builder one, I have never met anyone who talks like this.

There's one in the pub we used to go to. The chippy got a new, young woman and it was jokes about his battered sausage, until one of the other men shut him down. We are older and a lot of the drinkers have gone onto alcohol free Guinness, prompting comments about "it'd be like reading porn". He comes out with these things in shops, the street. One time in the shop a younger man asked him if he wasn't getting any, because he seems obsessed, but it hasn't stopped him. They are the embarrassing pervy uncles of yesteryear.
OP, tell him to leave you out of it, before you are looked at with pity.

Sounds like he was jealous of the muscly young man, tbh. Calling him "son" and making out that he was so clueless that his wife would make mincemeat of him and teach him a thing or two. I really think this is the male version of when a woman gets jealous of a beautiful woman.

I agree with your analysis, but I think a better analogy would be male gorillas scrapping for supremacy. 🤮 Women don’t behave like this.

Thebigonesgetaway · 20/06/2026 17:03

How 0ld are you both op?

Oh come come. Women do compete with other women, get bealous of other women, make catty comments and possessive about their partners, sure it’s not identical but it’s the female version, let’s not pretend otherwise

So your dh just randomly compliments a man ‘oh you look great. I wouldn’t trust you near my wife’ the man laughs. Your dh says ‘son, she’d eat you alive and teach you a thing or two.’
what a weird world.

sittingonabeach · 20/06/2026 17:09

So grim.

TheBloomingDahlia · 20/06/2026 17:12

It’s not my humour at all and I’d be very embarrassed if I was with him. It was supposed to be a weird compliment towards you (that he wouldn’t trust the man to not want to have sex with you, and that you are good at sex so could teach him things) but I think talking to random men about them having sex with his wife is very weird and objectifying of your DH. Why can’t he just say the man looks fit and leave it at that? Is he insecure about something?

DavidStopActingLikeADisgruntledPelican · 20/06/2026 17:13

The older I get the less I can stand “cheeky chappies”. Usually because it’s code for “unfunny bellend with shit banter”. This example proves my point.

aurynne · 20/06/2026 17:17

Are you sure your DH is not secretly gay?

HideousKinky · 20/06/2026 17:18

XelaM · 20/06/2026 16:42

Very awkward but then I absolutely detest "cheeky chappies" 😬 sorry

Me too

Agree! Your husband sounds insecure and threatened by hot young men!

Noodleschicken · 20/06/2026 17:21

He sounds like a creep

Downatthebeach · 20/06/2026 17:22

Sorry OP but your husband sounds like a totally disrespectful sleazebag. Not only did he seek to embarrass you, but I’m sure the poor young man who he said this to would have thought your husband was a wasted space.

What on earth possessed him to make such dreadful comments about you. Perhaps it’s time you ditched him. I certainly would not be sticking by someone with nil respect for me.

Has he always been like this or has he just got worse as he is getting older???

Duvetdayforme · 20/06/2026 17:23

Dear god. He sounds very juvenile.

babyproblems · 20/06/2026 17:23

The first line ok but of a joke / man compliment. The second part - just plain weird!!! What was the thinking behind it… is your DH controlling or jealous? Seems odd!

RaininSummer · 20/06/2026 17:24

Pretty grim. Accidentally clicked wrong vote. Not sure if it's more offensive to you or the man.

Jamescleverest · 20/06/2026 17:24

He sounds like a total creep.

luckylavender · 20/06/2026 17:24

I’d be so embarrassed

AgnesX · 20/06/2026 17:24

Just yuk. Cringe.😖

Pickledonions12 · 20/06/2026 17:24

Christ on a bike. Your H is disgusting

wherearethesnacks · 20/06/2026 17:26

Ah, yes. The type who humiliates his wife for a laugh from a stranger.
