The second option is worth demanding. The most progressive options are never the easiest. But in the long run it would seem to satisfy all sides.

Placards demanding 'Effective checks and processing' is much less volatile and divisive than 'get them out'.

You can only do what you’re after if you get rid of international law. Then you can stop everyone and only let in a few you can check.

That’ll take a vote, a mandate and selling in that international laws should go.

While the government lies and gaslights us and continues their two tier policing, protests will keep happening as it becomes the only about left to people.

I don’t want riots any more than you do but while the PM himself vilifies and attacks us, the divisions he’s causing will get worse.

👏 he's responsible for the division. Thursday's election can't come soon enough. Even Burnham will be marginally less destructive than this clown.

Interesting that the original post of "Well done, Brighton, for seeing off the 'fascists'" has got only 50% approval. On Mumsnet which has always been politically liberal-left.

There is definitely a change happening as more people are starting to question the asylum and immigration system / racket.

Yes, will be interesting to see how all this plays out in the by-election. That will be the first real test of the country's mood. Although I don't really know what he stands for, but yes, got to be better than Starmer.

I was reading an article in the times yesterday about huge failings in maternity care at Leeds hospitals ,thousands of babies dying needlessly or badly hurt for life

There are many layers to the story and then it comes out at the end the "ethos " of the maternity team ( it's written in the article ) was to push natural births and it was at this point ,the deaths rocketed.

So my point is , an innocent mum to be going to have her baby doesn't realise she's actually going to be battling with a hidden secret ideology behind the scenes that will deny her normal and proper care.

This sounds the same re this secret gov dept to calm tensions or police receiving secretive poltcal training they dare not complain about

This feels more like a communist regime than an open and free democracy

Yes, the same misguided but utterly self righteous people that refuse to properly publicise and acknowledge the serious issues caused by babies born in repeated first cousin marriages.

They even wrote NHS publications presenting the ‘upsides’ of this practice that directly causes thousands of baby deaths and congenital disability per year. Costing huge amounts of money to the NHS.

These ideologues have huge power but little brain or accountability.

One of the biggest lies perpetrated by the left is that people who are concerned about excessive immigration are fascists.

It's a complete and utter lie, and is the reason I parted company with the left/Greens.

Same - I am very left leaning economically but to label everyone who has concerns about immigration as ‘fascist’ or ‘racist’ is so unhelpful and alienates a lot of people who would normally be left leaning.
Scandinavia seem to have a robust approach to immigration as they value their culture yet none of those countries are routinely called fascist - how come?. There has to be a much more nuanced argument than hurling names.

I hope so.
There was a similar thread yesterday with a similar theme. I was only 1in 4 on that one.
Yes some British men are horrible, it doesn't make any sense allowing more men from cultures with terrible attitudes to women into the UK, though.

It just doesn't. It's illogical.

It’s still 92% white @Clavinova. N Irish politicians of all parties were very clear that the appalling events this week were thuggery - their word, not mine. And 20000 Belfast residents turned out yesterday to agree with them.

20,000? Really? So far i have read reports of between 3 and 5k

Agreed. I used to be left wing but I feel alienated now.

I think countries in Europe who've adopted a more robust approach to immigration and asylum have kind of been forced to by the electoral gains of far right parties: Sweden Democrats, AFD, Danish Peoples Party etc. More centrist politicians have taken note and their policies have changed.

I wouldn't take much store by it tbh. Its fairly obvious there is a bit of an anti immigration push on here at the moment and no doubt some very busy voting.
According to surveys of the general public, while 60% of people have some sympathy with the grievences of others around immigration, only around 36% of people support even the peaceful anti immigration protests, dropping to around 7% when they involve racism, violence or Islamophobia. Which unfortunately they often do.
I can't imagine a MN vote that hadn't been impacted by those with an agenda deviating so far from the national picture. Whatever their views on immigration, most people seem to have had more than enough of mobs descending on towns ruining the peace and making people feel unsafe.

Our asylum laws are old and outdated.

We need new realistic and workable laws as well as the above.

Inthesummertimewhen · 14/06/2026 19:44

PinkandPerky · 14/06/2026 18:17

It has to be worked towards quickly for the good of current citizens and also for the good of asylum seekers and refugees.

Just because something is very difficult doesn't mean we should give up aiming high.

Terrorising innocent people, petrol bombing homes, torching their cars, smashing up their businesses is no way to effect change.

It's just mindlessness and achieves nothing but more pain.

The laws to offer asylum and protect those individuals butt up against the laws to keep the citizens of the UK safe. ..and yet the first duty of a government is to protext it's citizens.

The laws must change and reflect the new situation we are in .

However we know that immigration is a massive money making machine so many people have fingers in it's pie.

No love, the far left are Communists. Fascists are the far right.

As politics are more a horseshoe than a straight line, Extreme (as in far) right and left are nearer to each other, than the middle, in their intolerant, murderous, authoritarian state control over their unfortunate populations.

Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin, China, North Korea, etc. Concentration camps, forced labour and Killing fields. All alike at the end of the day.

If we’re talking about real Fascism, and real Communist control.

BIossomtoes · 14/06/2026 18:36

Blaming the unrest on a hangover from the Troubles is more deflection and denial.

It isn’t. Those boys - because that’s what they are - have been brought up with tales of derring do from the troubles. Their heroes are from that period of history. They employed exactly the same weapons - petrol bombs and setting houses alight. They wore dark clothes and balaclavas so they couldn’t be identified - who taught them that? And who has balaclavas just waiting for them to be needed?

And reported by various media outlets

“Evidence is now emerging that a ‘target list’ of immigrants’ addresses had been drawn up months ago, well before this week’s stabbing, suggesting that this was merely a pretext.”

"The details are understood to have been shared within far-Right circles since August 2025, and were first reported to police in January this year."

Inthesummertimewhen · 14/06/2026 19:49

But what has that got to do with asyslum seekers ?

The people who are complaining about being lumped in with racists and the far right because they are anti immigration, with no awareness of the irony, tend to lump anyone who doesn't support anti immigration protests in with TRAs and Green voters. Because while being of the right is a very broad church comprised of all sorts of different views, everyone left of centre has blue hair and is draped in a rainbow flag. Apparantly.

SadiraOfTyr · 14/06/2026 20:04

5MinuteArgument · 14/06/2026 18:30

Yes, agreed. Blaming the unrest on a hangover from the Troubles is more deflection and denial.

Also, the Republic of Ireland has had similar protests in relation to unprecedented demographic change and the imposition of too many migrants onto deprived communities.

Did you see any tricolours in the Belfast riots? Odd how despite the murder happening in a Catholic area it was the butcher’s apron that was being waved during the riots.

It is the minority.

I have no idea how, almost overnight, a large proportion of the population started assuming that every refugee is a criminal/rapist/sexual abuser. They are not. From what limited data is available, they are actually less likely to commit crimes than white British men.

Initial data shows foreign nationals are 71% more likely to commit sex crimes…

I have a problem with the people of Brighton, they are a bunch of snobby superior lefty liberal do gooders! Give them the immigrants then even though we all know they wouldn't really want their super rich bohemian city over run with immigrants lowering the tone, and fat boy slim!! Who cares what he thinks! Seriously

This actually made me laugh out loud!

There's a lot more to Brighton than the Lanes, Kemptown, and the genteel squares of "Hove, actually". There are several large social housing estates, at least two of which scored relatively high on indices of deprivation. There's also a lot of street homeless people.

Yes, agree. And if this govt refuse to protect them, people will elect someone who will. Maybe not yet, but eventually that will happen.
