AIBU to be driven mad by a colleague typing loudly all day?

AIBU to want to scream at my colleague who sits beside me for typing so loudly?

Every keystroke is SMACK SMACK SMACK. It's like she is trying to countersink the keys into the desk.

Zero ability to change her behaviour. Various people have mentioned it but she just giggles and says "oh yeah, my husband says I'm loud too!"

SMACK SMACK WHACK SMACK WHACKETY SMACKETY SMACK WHACK WHACK

You are unreasonable not to be using headphones. I'm not sure how people work in open plan offices without them

Greenfinch7 · 08/06/2026 15:23

That is unbearable for me too. Even medium loud typing drives me crazy, but I have misophonia, so there are other noises I also can't stand. Would you be able to wear some kind of ear defender, or does your work not allow that?

Don't be stupid. We are ALL wearing headphones.

She is unbelievable.

She needs a rubberised keyboard, that's all.

Dillydollydingdong · 08/06/2026 15:24

You should have been around when they used manual typewriters!

Our typing college would deafen you back in the day! The golfball invention saved us all.

AmethystDeceiver · 08/06/2026 15:25

I guess anything can wind you up if you let it

Idontjetwashthefucker · 08/06/2026 15:26

I'm guilty of this because I have one of the older clicky keyboards, can't use the new soft touch ones, they are too 'bouncy'

HuglessDouglass · 08/06/2026 15:26

I'd organise a whip round to buy her a new super quiet keyboard.

I'm the meantime, turn your music up op, and good luck!

Whoops75 · 08/06/2026 15:27

On holiday with my sister and she had a noise on for her phone keypad. It’s giving me the rage, haven’t said anything but why would you not notice yourself. It’s a totally unnecessary distraction.

Wearing headphones all day is quite uncomfortable. I cannot imagine having my ears 'blocked' for so many hours in a day. It's not good for our ears either, especially if you are listening to something for hours.

I have a background in mechanical engineering.

A workshop of 10 CNC Milling machines and 10 CNC lathes at full chat is still preferable to her machine gun typing.

Does she have long varnished fingernails to show off? And diamond dimante rings? It would annoy me too. Tap, Tap, TAP!

😂 “machine gun typing”

I think she needs a rubberised cell.

Over ear noise cancelling? If not invest in some.

You can get over ear ones that don't block and are very comfortable.

I'm a bit confused about how hearing low level music/ podcast/ White noise is any worse for our ears than hearing other sounds all day.

The beauty of noise cancelling is that you don't have to have them loud to drown out other noises.

Whosthetabbynow · 08/06/2026 15:33

Thing is, once it’s annoyed you you’re listening out for it. Couldn’t bear it. Sympathies.

Ugh, how annoying I used to work with someone who clicked her tongue all day. Currently sit across from someone who is constantly banging their metal drawer closed. I don't know what she does be putting in and out of it all day!

MyShyCat · 08/06/2026 15:30

She must be very loud. Not much you can do except move desks or work from home when she's in if you are hybrid.

MeAndMyGhost · 08/06/2026 15:34

Oh dear, I think this may be me. I can touch type really quickly (over 120 wpm) and when I'm in my train of thought I can type as quickly as I think. It is helpful but I do work in an open plan office and now I'm worried I'm annoying everyone from the replies to this thread 😬

We're not allowed to wear headphones in our open plan office because apparently "it stops us engaging with our colleagues".
