AIBU to be driven mad by a colleague typing loudly all day?

AIBU to want to scream at my colleague who sits beside me for typing so loudly?

Every keystroke is SMACK SMACK SMACK. It's like she is trying to countersink the keys into the desk.

Zero ability to change her behaviour. Various people have mentioned it but she just giggles and says "oh yeah, my husband says I'm loud too!"

SMACK SMACK WHACK SMACK WHACKETY SMACKETY SMACK WHACK WHACK

I think you are stretching it there with the misogyny tbh. I didn't take it as that. Sarcastic, belittling but not that. And some of the posters on this thread have deserved having sarcasm thrown at them.

Probably how we did not that long ago in the old days when people were able to work in a shared space by being aware, respectful and responsive to people we might have been disturbing.
It’s not good for us to completely block out our surroundings.

Unfortunately a lot of people don't seem able to do that, one bloke especially who conducts every phone conversation at a level I can only describe as yelling.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you don’t actually understand why the term you used is misogynistic.

Women are often addressed with diminutives such as “hon”, “sweetheart”, “love”, or “dear” by men like you who would not use those terms for other men. It’s an attempt to put a woman down rather than engaging with us as equals.

I have seen you on the FWR board claiming that you want to support women. If you truly want to do that, please don’t resort to patronising and sexist terms when you disagree with us.

If you continue in this way on this thread after I have explained that to you, it will demonstrate to us here, and on the feminism board, that you’re actually not a friend of women at all.

Now we're cooking! What else you got?

Okay, I see you.

On behalf of loud keyboard tappers everywhere, I apologise. In my case, it is certainly not deliberate. I type quickly and manage to make noise when I do it.

However, I hope the throat clearers, nose blowers, loud laughers, 'when I went to [insert tropical location]'ers, and 'my amazing child did this'ers also realise we all have traits that irritate people and, sadly, that comes with working in the same space as each other.

BurntBroccoli · 08/06/2026 21:55

I’m so pleased I work from home now. What with the loud keyboard clattering, mindless chatter all day, tea slurping and microwave stinking it was a nightmare.

I also have misophonia and very sensitive to smells.

Thank-you! It's funny how quickly some posters scream "MISOGYNY!!" when actually all I am doing is reacting to other posters stupid sarcastic comments.

I'm sure some posters just don't like a bloke being here!

We have someone like that. I know far more than I need to about his family because of the shouty conversations he has.

Can you move to a different desk?!

BringBackCatsEyes · 09/06/2026 08:34

I wfh and know that sometimes I get a bit bangy on the keyboard. I think I just get lost in my own world. I have no one to bother, but do try to remember to be a bit softer because I'm sure it's not good for my hands long term.

The thing with headphones is that you are unaware of how much you might be annoying other people.

BringBackCatsEyes · 09/06/2026 08:39

NImumconfused · 08/06/2026 21:40

Then someone needs to talk to him (again, like we did in the old days). The solution to dealing with anti-social behaviour isn't to just suck it up and change your behaviour, but to deal with it via the proper channels.

I worked near a habitual sniffer. I've worked near people whose headphones seeped sound. I worked near people who spend all day on the phone on LOUD.
They were all dealt with. If a request is reasonable then it shouldn't be a problem. Sometimes management are unable to deal with these things which does make it hard for employees.

TellingIt · 09/06/2026 08:46

There is something so performative about people who type like that. So irritating and they don’t seem to care or try and quieten it down. I have experience of this from…My annoying husband. You can actually sense the vibrations from his keyboard downstairs.

Sidebeforeself · 09/06/2026 08:49

plims · 08/06/2026 20:31

Did you mean to sound like a misogynist?

Oh come on. Is that really misogyny? Throwing that word around so lightly is an insult to women who really experience mysogyny

Turnitoffnonagain · 09/06/2026 08:51

Get her one of those silicone covers for her keyboard, Amazon probably sell them.
Constant noise is annoying in the office. I've worked with a number of pen clickers, nail tappers, throat clearers and humming types.
Drives you mad.

Very nicely put.

We had this problem at work. Using a wrist support roll thingy helped as it changed the hand position and the typing was softer.

TellingIt · 09/06/2026 09:06

Various people have mentioned it but she just giggles and says "oh yeah, my husband says I'm loud too

This attitude would annoy me as much as the actual tapping. Does she also have a mug saying, ‘you don’t have to be crazy to work here but it helps’?

angelos02 · 09/06/2026 09:10

If she's been told she's doing it and it is annoying, why hasn't she stopped? Is there something wrong with her? I'd feel terrible if I was doing something annoying to the extent that I had to be told and didn't stop doing it.

You do realise that anyone under 60
has no idea what you mean? The golf ball and then the daisy wheel, carbon copies and tippex. Can you tell I’m over 60?

Oi, I'm 46 and not only do I know but I have used one (was my Mums, she taught me to type long before I got to secondary school), in fact several types of typewriter, manual then electric, before we got a PC in the mid 90s.

Remember all those!

Had to think about the daisy wheel for a while!!

You can get over ear ones that don't block and are very comfortable.

I'm a bit confused about how hearing low level music/ podcast/ White noise is any worse for our ears than hearing other sounds all day.

The beauty of noise cancelling is that you don't have to have them loud to drown out other noises.

Because those sounds are not necessarily right inside our ears. Obviously it also depends on what kinds of sounds/noises you are exposed to. Is it loud honking, baby screeching or natural environmental ones like people talking, bird sounds? Intensity and length of those sounds also matter. I have known of many people having increased hearing issues because they are listening to music etc. all day, worsened when the outside sounds are also too loud.

unbuttonedowl · 09/06/2026 12:03

The trouble with is that people in headphones make a lot of gross noises without realising it - my colleague sniffs incessantly, chews loudly and jumps like I'm a serial killer if I need to ask her something with her headphones in.

So I don't wear headphones and have to listen to one colleague scraping her bowl to death at her desk, my other one yawning all day dramatically and chewing her lunch at her desk, my boss scraping his plate to death at his desk then chewing loudly on crackers all afternoon, and a lot of sniffing and fake-coughing. There's also a kitchen where they could eat but that would involve social interaction.

Er….. (woman here, also on FWR board) and I’ve seen this term on here a lot, levelled by women at other women. It refers to the netmums/ nethuns trope, so I’d describe as a bit classist rather than misogynistic myself. It can be funny, does make me laugh on occasion. (I’m working class btw, daughter of economic migrants who were uneducated FI)

Crazybooklady · 09/06/2026 19:49

I have misophonia & that would also drive me crazy, I work in an office with a loud chewing gum chewer, a stimmer & someone with ocd who runs around all day, I’m so overstimulated. I don’t how I get through the days.
