AIBU to be driven mad by a colleague typing loudly all day?

AIBU to want to scream at my colleague who sits beside me for typing so loudly?

Every keystroke is SMACK SMACK SMACK. It's like she is trying to countersink the keys into the desk.

Zero ability to change her behaviour. Various people have mentioned it but she just giggles and says "oh yeah, my husband says I'm loud too!"

SMACK SMACK WHACK SMACK WHACKETY SMACKETY SMACK WHACK WHACK

You could ask the teacher/boss if you could move tables. This happened to me at school! I thought we were mates!!

She needs a rubberised keyboard, that's all.

Exactly. I remember how kound those old keyboards were

WiddlinDiddlin · 08/06/2026 18:12

Get her a new soft touch quiet keyboard (or make whoever is responsible for that, do it).

Or just chop off her fingers.

Either should work. I type a lot and I really cannot stand the smackety whackety loud typers. Makes me more stabby than the crackly hold music I am currently listening to (why is it ALWAYS crackly)... and that is quite quite stabby.

Angelic999 · 08/06/2026 18:43

She's probably oblivious. I am also a loud typer and to be honest don't know how to type quietly! Thankfully I don't often work in an open plan office. When I do there are many things that annoy me, namely people taking very loud teams calls without headphones. I'd either mention it to her if you have a relationship with her, or send it to her manager/office manager for them to have a quiet word.

Passaggressfedup · 08/06/2026 19:09

Posters mention noise cancelling headphones. I must be an idiot for not getting it! I have expensive Sony noise cancelling headphones. It only cancel noise if I listen to music. If not, I can still everything.

Are people saying you should listen to music? Because ai think it's totally unacceptable to expect people to have to listen to music all day long.

Nofeckingway · 08/06/2026 19:20

Now I still long for the days when you could hear the typing, ring returns , and landlines ringing and the noise it made when it was slammed down . Rather like the news room situations you see in movies .
But we also had tea breaks with tea ladies ,and buns , an hour at a lunch canteen with subsided meals and nobody ever worked anything but 9-5 unless we got paid overtime rates .
Not a century ago either , this was late 80s , early 90s .

Judging from your communication style throughout this thread, I suspect you aren't that easy to share an open plan office with either.

Yes, I thought the same.

Nat6999 · 08/06/2026 19:42

One of the doctors at my surgery does this, I refuse to deal with him.

MrsLFii · 08/06/2026 19:45

haha it’s awful isn’t it?? I used to work with a bloke like that, whack whack whack SIGHHHHHH, whack whack whack, UGHHHHHH, whack whack whack… He broke so many keyboards 🤦‍♀️ he also had a huge bunch of keys hooked on a carabiner to his belt loop and that jangling noise as he marched like a fucking elephant around in his bloody army boots (he was in the army you know… 45 years ago, and didn’t get through basic training (?) 😂) will haunt my nightmares forever. He was awful 😂

Statsquestion1 · 08/06/2026 19:48

HuglessDouglass · 08/06/2026 15:26

I'd organise a whip round to buy her a new super quiet keyboard.

I'm the meantime, turn your music up op, and good luck!

Surely she just orders one through the workplace! Like fuck I would pay for my own keyboard for work let alone anyone else’s!!

MrsKateColumbo · 08/06/2026 15:47

These people drive me mad. I dont mind typing noise but why do some people attack the keyboard? Atghghghghg

Age can be a factor.

Those of us who learned to type on manual typewriters do tend to have a firmer strike pattern. I'm 66 and have been trying to train myself not to strike so hard.

Our typing college would deafen you back in the day! The golfball invention saved us all.

You do realise that anyone under 60
has no idea what you mean? The golf ball and then the daisy wheel, carbon copies and tippex. Can you tell I’m over 60?

We're not allowed to wear headphones in our open plan office because apparently "it stops us engaging with our colleagues".

Try loops. They go inside of your ear, not the outside ones bit like ear plugs. You can get ones that mute. Mine are just normal ones but are clear. No one can tell I am wearing them.

tigger1001 · 08/06/2026 20:08

i can't stand a noisy keyboard. Even if it's me typing. I bought myself a quiet keyboard for work and it's really helped.

so I completely understand the hatred of the noise. Not sure how you deal with it though. There really isn't a need to hammer the keys. I feel for you

That's inhuman!!

beasmithwentworth · 08/06/2026 20:52

Oh yes I sometimes wfh with a friend and she has the jangly brackets and the whack whack whack typing. I think I can deal with with it because a) it’s only 1 day a week and b) she’s my best friend so we also chat and I enjoy her company so I see it as something I can tolerate. You do have my sympathies though.

I sometimes feel like putting my headphones on when I’m in the office with my team and there is no rule against it but we have to talk about work things across the desk frequently so that’s a no - plus I quite like them and we have a laugh / interesting chats so the good outweighs the bad.

thelostkarma · 08/06/2026 21:14

Muttley17 · 08/06/2026 16:00

I worked next to someone who wore a bracelet that jangled on her desk everytime she moved her mouse or typed. I wanted to kill her everyday!

Oh god I recently had this in an office, I wanted to staple their hands to the desk or launch myself out the window.

LOL.... 6/10. That was pretty good.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you don’t actually understand why the term you used is misogynistic.

Women are often addressed with diminutives such as “hon”, “sweetheart”, “love”, or “dear” by men like you who would not use those terms for other men. It’s an attempt to put a woman down rather than engaging with us as equals.

I have seen you on the FWR board claiming that you want to support women. If you truly want to do that, please don’t resort to patronising and sexist terms when you disagree with us.

If you continue in this way on this thread after I have explained that to you, it will demonstrate to us here, and on the feminism board, that you’re actually not a friend of women at all.

HoppityBun · 08/06/2026 21:37

It’s weird how some people clatter their keyboards and don’t realise how loud they are compared with everyone else. Sometimes I wonder if the noise encourages them to think they’re busy; at times it’s almost frenetic.

I think they bang down on the keys whereas others can type by moving their fingers more and their hands less.

Some people you can hear typing across the office and others not at all.

NImumconfused · 08/06/2026 21:37

concertinacornflake · 08/06/2026 17:31

That's completely unreasonable. How do you get anything done???

I genuinely don't think that's their priority somewhere days! They contradict themselves constantly.

We were told we had to come back into the office because working from home meant we weren't able to collaborate with our colleagues enough, despite it having worked flawlessly for two years during the COVID era (in fact our productivity went up!). We do the vast majority of our work via email or teams, as we have multiple sites and are usually working with colleagues across several of them Yet someone the other day was told that they shouldn't physically go and speak to colleagues working in the same office, but should instead phone them!! Make it make sense...
