AIBU to be driven mad by a colleague typing loudly all day?

MyShyCat · 08/06/2026 15:20

AIBU to want to scream at my colleague who sits beside me for typing so loudly?

Every keystroke is SMACK SMACK SMACK. It's like she is trying to countersink the keys into the desk.

Zero ability to change her behaviour. Various people have mentioned it but she just giggles and says "oh yeah, my husband says I'm loud too!"

SMACK SMACK WHACK SMACK WHACKETY SMACKETY SMACK WHACK WHACK

Oh dear, I think this may be me. I can touch type really quickly (over 120 wpm) and when I'm in my train of thought I can type as quickly as I think. It is helpful but I do work in an open plan office and now I'm worried I'm annoying everyone from the replies to this thread 😬

Touch type... Now that's a good idea.

Not Smack Type or Whack Type?

I must tell her.

We're not allowed to wear headphones in our open plan office because apparently "it stops us engaging with our colleagues".

Is "FIX BAYONETS!!!!" considered polite engagement?

You are unreasonable not to be using headphones. I'm not sure how people work in open plan offices without them

Not permitted my office

StrictlyCoffee · 08/06/2026 15:42

I’ve worked with people like that, it’s as if
they type by throwing rocks on the keyboard

People have been working in offices without earphones for more than a century.

How silly to say it's now unreasonable.

TempestToo · 08/06/2026 15:44

Oh god I am that person! Luckily when I’m typing I’m at home alone now 🤣

Monty36 · 08/06/2026 15:46

You have to zone out from other noise in an open plan office. And focus on whatever it is you are doing.
She sounds like the sort of person who doesn’t know you can close a door instead of slamming it. They are usually oblivious to the racket they make.

MrsKateColumbo · 08/06/2026 15:47

These people drive me mad. I dont mind typing noise but why do some people attack the keyboard? Atghghghghg

We had a conversation about this at work once, in an office of several over 50s and a handful of young people. We came to the conclusion that it's us oldies above a certain age (yes, myself included) who tend to whack the keyboard noisily. It's because we learned to type hundreds of years ago on an old fashioned manual typewriter. You had to wallop the keys pretty hard to get anywhere. Anyone who learned on a modern keyboard can type nice and quietly, but we've had to learn new habits. I must confess to rattling away on my keyboard at times, but fortunately nobody else has to listen to me as I don't have to share my office space. It's just as well as I'm probably very annoying.

You've misunderstood quite a lot.

OP didn't say anything about a rubberised brain cell. She joked about her colleague needing to be put in a rubberised cell - I guess like a padded cell in an asylum.

People are so goddamn humourless around here!

You say about your colleage having a rubberised brain cell.

Please point out where OP said that.

I worked next to someone who wore a bracelet that jangled on her desk everytime she moved her mouse or typed. I wanted to kill her everyday!

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 08/06/2026 16:04

I've had several amazon keyboards which come with a silicone keyboard cover. I've noticed this dampens the sound considerably.
Also try a rubberised mat underneath the keyboard.. ( not a rubberised brain cell)

Also. earphones.

Does it interrupt your telephone conversations at work? Rather than keyboards, I had a colleague with a big shouty voice that drove me mad ( get some headphones with a mic) and make your company pay for them.

Beachtastic · 08/06/2026 16:05

I type a bit like this, luckily am self-employed from home. I learned to type decades ago, on manual typewriters with rusty keys. My DH is always telling me I only need a light touch nowadays, but it's like telling a cricket bowler to just roll the ball towards the stumps. It's too deeply ingrained in me.

NameChangeMay2026 · 08/06/2026 16:09

MyShyCat · 08/06/2026 15:30

I think she needs a rubberised cell.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I was accused of similar when I first when into the workplace, OP. I'm quieter these days, but I think it was because, back then, I used to play the piano a lot.

She seems to take people's comments as a joke, but you need to speak to her manager. He or she needs to tell her that hitting the keys so hard all day every day is disturbing people and she needs to not hit the keyboard so hard. Also that it's not great treatment of company property. And also the company should buy her one of those quiet keyboards others have mentioned.

Whoops75 · 08/06/2026 15:27

On holiday with my sister and she had a noise on for her phone keypad. It’s giving me the rage, haven’t said anything but why would you not notice yourself. It’s a totally unnecessary distraction.

Edited

My MIL had the same when she stayed with her once and it was so irritating. I asked her if she realised she had it on and she didn't realise it could be turned off which she then did.

Peterdottir · 08/06/2026 16:14

YANBU. I learnt to type on a manual typewriter and remember how weird it seemed when i first typed on a keyboard but i soon adjusted.

Probably not but it's what they deserve, the noisy typists and the ones who hold every conversation at a million decibels!

You wouldn't have thought there'd be that many people still in offices who learned on a manual typewriter these days, I'm mid to late 50s and I learned on a computer keyboard as a teenager.

BashfulClam · 08/06/2026 16:23

We aren’t allowed headphones in the office ac it bakes you unapproachable and a colleague can’t just ask a question apparently 🤷🏻‍♀️ one of my colleague doesn’t move her mouse she kind of throws it it it gets to me.

ohyesido · 08/06/2026 16:27

I had this with a colleague, no one else typing bothered me but this particular person used to type in what I can only describe as staccato, nothing for ages then suddenly a load of sharp taps like they were playing piano with flourish and pizzazz.

I ride a motorbike so always have rhubarb and custard ear plugs on hand.

Noise cancelling headphones AND ear plugs are still not enough.
