AIBU to refuse removing lilies because next door’s cats keep coming in?

Next door neighbours cats frequently cause a nuisance to me. Pooing in my garden , getting in the house if back door or windows open etc. I shoo them out or pick up the poo it annoys me but I tolerate it.

She has messaged me today (she can see directly into my conservatory from her garden and she is always staring ) asking me to shut my windows / door or to get rid of my flowers as they are poisonous to cats! They are 2 bunches of Lillies that family got me for my birthday yesterday! I also have some in a pot in the garden and various other flowers. I’ve messaged back and said maybe she needs to make her cats indoor cats as I’m not changing anything and that the cats will be fine as I’ve had the same flowers in the garden for a month and they’ve not gone near that pot (dig up my other ones though to use as litter trays!) so I’m not getting rid of my ones in vases in my own home just in case her cats come in !!!!!

She's batshit.

WallaceinAnderland · 25/05/2026 16:37

Get more lilies

modgepodge · 25/05/2026 16:38

Totally unreasonable. I never had lilies in the house when I had my own cat as was worried about poisoning. But when she went out 🤷‍♀️ I couldn’t control what she did. Even if you get rid of yours, there’s nothing to stop another neighbour who’s garden she can’t see having lilies.

Error404FucksNotFound · 25/05/2026 16:39

She is massively unreasonable.

GrumpyCommuter · 25/05/2026 16:41

I am fully committed to Team Cat - you are absolutely not unreasonable. If someone allows their cat to roam, they are allowing the risk of the cat being exposed to whatever hazards it encounters. Happy birthday, and enjoy your flowers 😊

Iusedtobefun95 · 25/05/2026 16:44

Outdoor cats can also be hit by cars is the owner expecting the whole town to walk. Iv cats and never in a million years if I let them out would ask anyone anything like that

ParadiseIsNoBunker · 25/05/2026 16:46

I’d have sent this 😂 and gone out to buy more lillies. All the colours. All the varieties. Planted, cut, potted.

I’d have spent a fucking fortune on them.

OttersOnAPlane · 25/05/2026 16:48

Oh, and happy birthday for yesterday!

Ooodelally · 25/05/2026 16:50

Happy birthday! Please buy yourself a MASSIVE bunch of birthday Lillie’s from me! Your neighbour is a fucking lunatic.

JulietteHasAGun · 25/05/2026 16:59

If I wanted to be nice I’d pull the stamens out which are the poisonous bits. But obviously you don’t have to.

Catwalking · 25/05/2026 17:00

I’m more concerned for your beautiful lilies, will they survive in a hot conservatory 😳?

MyArtfulGreySloth · 25/05/2026 17:01

wtf 🤣 I’m a cat owner, but my god she’s unhinged!

staceyflack · 25/05/2026 17:04

🤣... your neighbour is ridiculous!

PonyPatter44 · 25/05/2026 17:07

I have lilies in the garden, I also have cats. Your neighbour is ridiculous, just ignore her. I hope you had a lovely birthday!

Fluffybuns88 · 25/05/2026 17:07

Absolutely not, we transitioned our cats to indoor cats last year because one of the neighbours mentioned he sets his aggressive dog on cats that go in his garden and they it had already killed two.

I am not responsible for my neighbours gardens, I am however responsible for my cats.

I would also keep them in if they were becoming a nuisance.

Tryingtobenormal124 · 25/05/2026 17:08

Totally bat shit and id be throwing the cat shit over into her garden too. Stupid woman. Happy birthday 🎂

Hahhaha. Nailed it.

Esmeraldathe3rd · 25/05/2026 17:11

Do they also want everyone to stop driving down the road and stop letting their dogs in the garden?
Don't put lillies in their garden. If they don't think their cats are safe outside then they need to keep them in.

ThankYouNigel · 25/05/2026 17:11

YANBU- she needs to keep her own cat in her own garden, her responsibility to cat proof her own garden. You are free to enjoy your own private garden as you so choose. What is wrong with people?!

Pineapplewhip · 25/05/2026 17:18

"Hi Sue, I am not shutting my house up when its 28c outside or removing flowers (they were a gift - though not that, that matters). The responsibility lies on you as the cat owner to keep your cats inside if you are so anxious. This would be miles better for me too, since your cat is always pooing in my garden and coming into my home uninvited! Also please dont stare into my home like this, I feel uncomfortable about that".

edwinbear · 25/05/2026 17:21

YANBU. I have a cat, we’re obviously careful with the plants we have in our garden/home but wouldn’t dream on expecting our neighbours to restrict what they do with theirs. Cats roam, you can’t keep them 100% safe if you allow them outside.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 25/05/2026 17:23

She sounds unhinged but if her cat gets sick she will blame you and well… she seems unhinged. How I would respond depends on how crazy she actually is.

hahabahbag · 25/05/2026 17:24

The only reason why I personally wouldn’t have lilies is because I’m allergic, terrible hayfever from them. But as far as cats, keep your cat in your garden, plenty of options to do so

cramptramp · 25/05/2026 17:25

I didn’t know they were poisonous to cats and because they are my favourite flowers often had them in the house over the many, many years I had cats. None of them died from Lily poisoning. Ignore your neighbour.

DavidStopActingLikeADisgruntledPelican · 25/05/2026 17:26

If she’s that worried about her cats being poisoned by her neighbour’s plants she needs to keep them indoors until she feels it’s safe.
