Mayonnaise in a jar... you're a psychopath?

Squeezy is the only acceptable form.

OP posts:
OnlyOneAdda · 21/05/2026 21:40

We moved back to jars from squeeze…was easier for a sandwich as didn’t have to bother to spread but always about half of it left in the bottle at the end and plastic 😬 (though we do have squeezy plastic ketchup…)

With a jar and a spatula literally zero waste.

NerdyBird · 21/05/2026 21:43

Jars for us. We used to get French style but now get Polish. I’ve got silicon jar scrapers to get every last bit.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 21/05/2026 21:46

Yabu. Single use plastics need to be banned.

InveterateWineDrinker · 21/05/2026 21:47

You buy your mayonnaise? How common.

Yep. Polish mayonnaise is a game changer. If you try this and still prefer squeezy crap I'm afraid it's you who is the psychopath.

You are a psychopath and a sociopath if you put mayo on chips.

Mayo on chips is amazing and even better on cheesy chips

AmazingGreatAunt · Yesterday 06:14

Another one, who makes her own. It takes me less than 5 minutes and I know what has gone into it, unlike bought products. Recently saw something on YouTube about mayonnaise, which confirmed my choice to diy.

Empress13 · Yesterday 06:26

Not mayo but I like honey in a jar so I can use my spooly to twirl it around (not sure what it is called)

Strandas · Yesterday 06:37

Is Helmann’s even really mayo? Why is it so white? White mayo makes me feel a bit queasy, it has to be yellow!

This is the nicest mayo! DH bought me 4 jars for Christmas a couple of years ago - best present ever 😋

Who cares it tastes so good

DoneWithMIL · Yesterday 07:11

When you are done with it - the plastic can go to a landfill or be recycled which creates microplastics - hope your convenience is worth the damage all this plastic will do to humanity and the planet.

SliceofTosst · Yesterday 07:15

You can't get the last lot out of a squeeze one.

I get jars and use one of those long sundae dessert teaspoons to get it all out when it's low.

TheDogsMother · Yesterday 07:52

I have turned my back on the Squeezy bottles as it’s impossible to get the last of it out then impossible to clean. Good lord fashioned jars here.

TunnocksOrDeath · Yesterday 07:56

I don’t know abt Helmans, but the only difference between the ingredients in Sainsbury’s mayo and stuff I’d make at home is that they use a small quantity of xanthan gum to stop it splitting. The gum is used by a lot of home bakers anyway, so it’s not something we’re particularly bothered about. Jars all the way though… it’s so much easier to get the last bits out and you can recycle the jar and the lid.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 08:03

I’ve tried both, squeezy and jar. Now I prefer jars. The current jar fell out of the fridge and whacked the cat who was passing so she wasn’t impressed.

andnowwhatdowedo · Yesterday 08:08

You plastic-squeezing goader. Nobody likes those travesties. Jars forever.

TheyGrewUp · Yesterday 08:09

I think I'll make some later - it's quite a soothing thing to do.

Deliaskis · Yesterday 08:18

We have both. Squeezy for 15yo DD who is a bit useless at practical tasks and would leave a mayo spoon on a worktop and the jar lid somewhere else, and not put it beach in the fridge etc. But jar for the adults in the house who are capable of more sophisticated logistical tasks😀. Squeezy is really annoying if you use it in recipes or make your own coleslaw or tuna mayo etc cos you have to use about half a squeezy bottle for anything like that.

In Germany they have mayonnaise in metal toothpaste type tubes. Think about that.

Also WhoTAF has ketchup on a BLT??? Ketchup does not belong anywhere near 2/3 of the key elements! Ketchup and lettuce??? Hard no.

Shoxfordian · Yesterday 08:21

Are there any good tricks for people who make their own? I've tried and it didn't work a few times.

I have a squeezy basic mayo and a posh lemon one in a glass jar

Deliaskis · Yesterday 08:27

I have also been known to have a secret posh mayo that only I know about, the heathens I live with don't deserve it.

Is it wrong that I'm as bought into this thread about mayonnaise containers as I am about threads that discuss Serious Issues Of Our Time?

Newnewcoffee · Yesterday 08:35

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 21/05/2026 21:06

I understand where you're coming from but I have to say that the Hellman's squeezy bottles are bloody awful because you have to repeatedly smack the bejeesus out of the things to not waste the last quarter of the bottle.

My son in law showed me how to put squeezy bottle in one end of a double oven glove with cap end inserted first. Then twirl in an upright circle. The vortex I think it’s called pushes mayo to cap end.
after hearing some horror stories,l I only do this outside because I don’t want clear up the mess it potentially might make

but it works well

and if jars weren’t so expensive, I definitely buy buying them

CanterThroughChaos · Yesterday 08:37

Noooo! The squeezy stuff tastes funny 🤢

BarbarianBabs · Yesterday 08:41

Jar has less waste if you scape out with a silicone spoon.

squeezies seem to end up with so much lurking in the bottle it feel like I’m kicking out a quarter of the stuff!
