AIBU to think these boys should have been incarcerated?

BBC News - Teenage boys sentenced for raping lone girls
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clypg68e2neo

I've never started an AIBU before, but I'm genuinely really shocked. I'm just not sure how this sentence is justifiable. Their actions were premeditated and deliberate, they were carrying a knife and they filmed themselves. They're obviously a danger to women/girls, and probably to other boys too.

If anyone knows how and why this sentence might have come about, I'd be interested to hear it.

Teenage boys sentenced for raping lone girls in Fordingbridge

The boys filmed themselves laughing and encouraging each other as they raped girls in separate attacks.

Thanks for proving my point.

Melonmango70 · 21/05/2026 17:46

I have also submitted a form. This sentence is disgusting.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

blublub · 21/05/2026 17:50

I have literally just read this, it is appalling, basically a green light for teenagers to rape!!

More info in the Daily Mail. Horrendous. I am running out of words to describe the fucked up everyday hatred of women and girls. Rape is practically decriminalised.

The Daily Mail for all its faults is almost the only paper that takes violence against women and girls seriously.

Summertimesadnessishere · 21/05/2026 17:50

I read this today whilst I was in the gym and I had to stop training I was just so appalled disgusted and angry. I feel so much for the poor girls. I am not one to campaign about things but this needs addressing so I’m writing to my MP and will sign petition. I hope the press get and whip up a storm. Those boys mothers and fathers raised monsters not boys. Those girls lives are ruined. So are their families. This sends a dreadful message to boys that they can rape young girls and get away with it. They deserve absolutely to get a decent custodial sentence. The judge is deranged and the government need to step in. So much for protection of women and girls. Starmer has nothing to help the cause - I saw what Jess Phillips MP said in her resignation letter who resigned as safeguarding minister - it just proves her point .

Greedybilly · 21/05/2026 17:54

Form sent and email to Home Secretary. Scandalous

ChalkOutlines · 21/05/2026 17:55

Funny how they’re all too “disabled” or/and of low intelligence to get a real sentence, but they weren’t disabled /low intelligence enough when they groomed a girl, planned their crimes, got weapons , decided to film it, and repeatedly raped , assaulted and humiliated two girls.

Voneska · 21/05/2026 17:55

These boys have probably ROBBED these girls of experiencing Falling in Love for the first time and getting innocently married.
These girls probably will have psychological serious trauma symptoms including Panic episodes, PTSD which will last for years and could need intense therapy for a long time.
As for the boys , they probably just went home, had a Shower, change of underpants, and life carrying on as normal; until they get bored again abd find another lone girl to r @ p e.

StephensLass1977 · 21/05/2026 17:56

Hard agree with you. One of the most disgusting things I've read in a very long time. The fact the judge said they didn't know what they were doing and PRAISED them for their conduct in court - ugh.

Martha23 · 21/05/2026 17:56

Explaining his sentence, Judge Nicholas Rowland said: "I should avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily…”

what the actual fuck

MulberryBrandy · 21/05/2026 17:57

Reacting to the sentences, Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Donna Jones said: "I'm deeply concerned these boys felt they could carry out such terrifying acts and share them online and not go to prison.
"Their sentences reflect a clear focus on rehabilitation rather than criminalisation. They are far too lenient."

Nextweektoo · 21/05/2026 17:57

This has been playing on my mind. I wondered if I had misreading the sentence they received.

aquitodavia · 21/05/2026 17:57

Looks like the police agree - from the BBC article. Hopefully they'll push for an appeal too.

Nogimachi · 21/05/2026 17:38

Fair but taken a little out of context. My point was simply that the judge would sentence differently if he suffered from the same crime.

You said nothing of the sort. You said the boys should be caned and you'd favour the judge being gang raped in an alley. Don't try to justify it.

Periperi2025 · 21/05/2026 18:03

Monty36 · 21/05/2026 14:55

The fifteen year old you have to wonder if he was fit for trial. Their learning difficulties / ADHD were assessed as being in the bottom 1% for their age.

So how will they be capable of re-education/ rehabilitation if they don't have the capacity to understand that rape is wrong.

What would you suggest is done with them.

Mental asylum for life?!

Monty36 · 21/05/2026 18:03

I do think the Sentencing Council and the guidelines they give to Judges need to be changed.
The sense of public outrage needs to be factored into sentencing.

I have filled in the online form to say I thinks it’s too lenient a sentence. It’s absolutely disgusting. We’ll be reading more about the crimes these boys commit in the future.

They showed no remorse and didn’t even admit they’d done it. I’m crying as I type this - I can’t believe this is the world we live in.

Edited

Please don’t interpret my question as some sort of apology for their crimes.

The Court found they were fit for trial in any event. Given the low level of capacity I did wonder how.

Backedoffhackedoff · 21/05/2026 16:18

Judges follow the law to sentence someone who has been found guilty. Unless they have made an error in the sentencing, they are not responsible for the guidelines they follow.

Do you think they just use their own personal opinion to sentence people?!?

He had guidelines. The guidelines include an option of a custodial sentence. He chose not to do that. So yes another fucking man supporting rapists. And if I had a male child who did something this horrific I’d be appealing myself; I’d want the little shit to receive a custodial sentence and allow society to do what I’d failed.

I’ve also complained about this appalling sentence. Let’s get as many people as possible to fill in the form - use the link in the box where it asks for the names of the defendants.

I’ve just filled this in too. I’m absolutely raging for those poor girls

Jesus Christ I haven’t yet RTFT (at 16.27) but @FinchiePinkWe get it. You have told us it’s a waste of time. To be honest in the war against VAWG most actions are pissing in the wind but this is a way of getting voices heard. Some poor bugger in an office is going to open a blown up inbox soon and the response will be noted.

It is horrifying for the girls. I don't understand why the judge was so complimentary of the boys? In view of what the boys said in court, like this:

The boys attempted to portray their victims as liars in court.
One claimed of the second victim: 'She was flirting with me. She made it up for a story to make up why she went missing to her mum and dad.
'It stopped her getting into trouble with her parents. I hadn't used a knife at all.'

I apologise that my total of five short posts on the matter have made the thread so difficult for you.
