Is Andy Burnham reasonable to say only a small minority of women object to men being in their toilets? YABU he's right, YANBU he's wrong *titled tweaked by MNHQ at OP's request*

'I don't think that's a majority view. I think it's a minority view and quite a small minority view, actually. But it is a view so you can't completely ignore it. Possibly they might be women who have experienced male violence at some point in their life. I don't know, that's one way of looking at it.'

Andy Burnham backs men who identify as female using women's toilets

The Greater Manchester mayor said the idea that single sex spaces like toilets should be protected for biological women was a 'minority view'.

He believes Grin

I hope they wipe the floor with him at the fake by election.

And why are all those women wearing trousers queuing when they could be using the trouser toilets?

This is what really annoys me. Why can’t politicians say what they think, rather than saying what focus groups tell him he ought to think? I want politicians who have their own views and can defend them because they think they’re right, not politicians who say whatever they think will make them most popular.

In fact the whole reason we are in this mess is that Keir is unwilling to tell the truth about the financial mess the UK is in and do things like getting rid of the triple lock and reducing welfare because he’s worried it would make him unpopular. I’d like a grown up in charge who takes the right decisions no mater how unpopular they may be.

This isn't even what Focus Groups tell them to think. The polling is clear that most people don't want men in women's toilets.

It's what activists in his own party are telling him to think. Potentially even some donors, who knows?

Gloriia · 20/05/2026 12:48

Oh dear. He'll be out before he's even in. Wanker.

The Mail headline says he backs men using women’s toilets. But that’s not what he says in the quote- he says it’s a minority view & which should be respected.

you have it backwards.

I shall forever refer to them as the trouser toilets.

Quite a few places now have unisex loos. Personally I’m quite happy to use them. And I wish they had them at e.g. the Albert Hall, where you can guarantee massive long queues for the ladies’, and a fraction of that for the men.
I dare say a good many theatres/venues are the same.

Thing is if you use unisex toilets you of course expect to see blokes in there. If you use women's toilets you don't. It's simple imo.

I'd use them if desperate but not out of choice purely because men's public loos stink so I can imagine unisex do too if they piss everywhere.

If all single sex communal toilets are replaced with single occupancy unisex toilets then the queues are going to be longer for everyone. There will be fewer toilets as the single occupancy toilets take up more room and they will take longer to use.

Oh, it reminds me of when a male boss of mine angrily complained "why do the women take so much longer in the toilets than the men?"

I hope you explained to him! Including pointing out that many men don't bother to wash their hands.

ApplebyArrows · 20/05/2026 12:54

Even if only 5% of women feel this way, why do their feelings count for less than those of the <1% of men who identify as trans?

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/05/2026 12:54

Voting currently 84% / 16% against his opinion. So that's not a small minority of the women here Andy! And the women on Mumsnet must be a fairish representation of women in the general population otherwise why would policiticans pay us so much attention?

A man assuming he knows what all women think, the bloody arrogance of him.

I'm also part of that 'minority'

Exactly. Men who just want to pee get take about 2 mins. Don’t need a stall. Once you force them to use the stalls then it slows everything down. They also leave the loos in a state. At my last work with unisex loos the women had to launch a mass complaint about the state men were leaving them. (And yes it was the men unless women were able to pee all over the back of the toilet seat and leave giant skid marks in the bowl-personal never seen anything like it in the women’s loos).

Gloriia · 20/05/2026 12:57

I bet Starmer is pissing himself laughing at this enormous clanger dropped even before said fake by election.

There are far more women in the country than trans women. What happened to Labour being “for the many not the few”?

It’s a typo - they’re “for the men”

IdaGlossop · 20/05/2026 12:59

Some proper data on this would be useful. It bothers me. Biological men should not be in women's loos. However, it surprises me how many women I talk to who don't see it as an issue.

Hotmess101 · 20/05/2026 12:59

Depressing, as I was hoping to have someone decent to vote for should he become the next Labour leader. Into the bin he goes, with all the rest 😞

CraftySeal · 20/05/2026 13:00

I wouldn't care if a trans woman, or for that matter, a man, was using the women's toilets as long as they weren't behaving inappropriately. And then the issue would be that they were behaving inappropriately rather than that they were trans/a man.

allthingsinmoderation · 20/05/2026 13:00

Could anyone who voted YABU explain why allowing women and girls some female single sex spaces is unreasonable?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/05/2026 13:01

Zimunya · 20/05/2026 11:54

Totally agree.

Honestly, I never understood why he was so popular to start with. Maggie Oliver has a lot to say about him and all he didn't do when she flagged grooming gangs to him.

He's clearly not interested in women's rights or welfare at all.

He absolutely needs more heat on this as well.
