To think Andy Burnham will not make Labour any more electable.

I think there is little appetite for a new PM and a new Labour leader will make 0 difference to their chances of winning. I also think the best the public can hope for, from any government, is a slow, well managed decline. I don't think there is much of a future in the UK and the public need to accept the social contract is no more. .

St Andy of Burnham is a cynical career opportunist who has managed to position himself as the King over the Water without having ever actually delivered anything he's promised in his life, because he promises everything then bottles it.

Greater Manchester CAZ anyone?

AKA Andy's Van Tax: "I will tax polluting vehicles off the road to meet my legal obligations on air quality, but nobody who might vote for me will actually have to pay it because I know it's a vote loser." The proposed tax was therefore loaded onto commercial vehicles instead and he went and had a celebratory wank to congratulate himself on his genius.... right up until the point someone pointed out that small business owners vote too.

The proposed CAZ was paused in 2022 and there has been nothing proposed since.

The £2 bus fares are decent.

He isn't an MP, so it isn't currently an issue?

Swiftie1878 · 14/05/2026 17:20

Speak to any Mancunian and they’ll tell you he’s done an amazing job as mayor.
His politics are a distance from mine, but he has sorted Manchester out tbf. He’s clearly good with local issues. Will that translate to the National stage? I doubt it.

Macclesfield MP just stood down to allow him to run.

How fast can they turn that around? Is it feasible that other contenders will wait?

Tellmetomorrow57 · 14/05/2026 17:22

@Swiftie1878 does he need permission? He did when there were talks about Levenshulme didn't he. Can't see Stamer allowing it if so...

I just heard that. Not sure he will get in. People have turned against Labour.

Starmer won’t be able to block him again. That would look really bad in the circumstances!

Grumpie · 14/05/2026 17:26

So he’s going to resign as mayor first? Is there a back up plan for him if he doesn’t get elected as an MP?

Good question!

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/05/2026 17:28

That’s not really the point though is it? The labour party are unhappy with their leader. They have 2 more years in government. They need a leader to be prime minister

It’s Makerfield which is near Wigan I think. Beth Rigby mispronounced it about 6 times making it sound like Macclesfield

Ah, thank you! x

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/05/2026 17:31

It’s such an affront to democracy. There’s no guarantee he’ll win a seat, the Greens and Reform will throw the kitchen sink at it and Josh Symons is taking the piss out of everyone who voted for him less than two years ago.

I think there is an appetite for a new PM, Starmer is absolutely reviled. But what a fucking mess of a thing this shitty coup is turning out to be. They’re as pathetic as they’re cynical. I hope he loses, I don’t care who to. And who’s going to win the mayoralty? That’ll be a mess too. Good job there are no wars going on or massive price increases coming down the track. Fuckssake.

I agree. She made it sound like Macclesfield. Andy Burnham wouldn't have a hope there

tarheelbaby · 14/05/2026 17:31

Andy Burnham won't necessarily make Labour candidates any more electable.

I live in an area where Labour never has a chance. The dominant parties are the tories and the lib/dems. Currently our MP is a lib/dem and the previous one was tory - he worked jolly hard b/c he held the seat by his fingernails and he knew it; he was a great local MP but unfortunately he voted tory in Parliament.

Would Andy be able to unsnarl some of the economic mess? Would his ministers address/mitigate some of the recent changes (NI, VAT, hospitality) which are hitting businesses and the economy hard?

Safarisagoody · 14/05/2026 17:35

God it’s awful isn’t it. How they are all crawling out the woodwork, showing their naked ambition. Andy burnham and the mp who will reject the people who voted for him and stand aside need to lose the bi election. Leave both of them with nothing. The voters need to take out these opportunists and give a message that if you stand and are elected you do the job.

I cannot think of many things I'd like to see more than Andy Burnham resign the GM mayoralty, lose the Makerfield by-election, and end up unemployed with Keir Starmer still in number 10.

Hankunamatata · 14/05/2026 17:37

Last thing we need is change of prime minister.

Me too actually, I think they all deserve it. I abhor what Labour has done to this country, their self serving behaviour and think Starmer is way out of his depth. But he should stay,

burnham, dropping the job he was elected to do, without a second thought, for their own self serving benefit, and the rest of them deserve to end up with nothing.

HaggieOTara · 14/05/2026 18:42

I think he’s brilliant. But if he becomes PM he’ll become a lying evasive egotist like all the rest.

Pinribbons · 14/05/2026 18:45

What's the demographic of Macclesfield? Any chance he won't win? I couldn't vote for someone scheming to be PM when more upheaval is the last thing we need, even thought I might otherwise vote Labour.

Sorry I've done it as well, I took the contituency name from PP

Wingedharpy · 14/05/2026 18:50

I think it's really Ashton in Makerfield.

OneTealShaker · 14/05/2026 18:50

Picture this:

Andy Burnham stands for the parliamentary seat.

Reform throw the kitchen sink at the by election for parliamentary seat and Manchester mayoralty.

Walter Titty and the party of weirdos and misfits split the vote in both elections.

Reform win the parliamentary seat and the mayoralty.

Andy Burnham, who set out to unseat Keir Starmer now has no office.

Entertainmet gold. Reform voters need to make this happen. Your country needs you.
