To think Andy Burnham will not make Labour any more electable.

I think there is little appetite for a new PM and a new Labour leader will make 0 difference to their chances of winning. I also think the best the public can hope for, from any government, is a slow, well managed decline. I don't think there is much of a future in the UK and the public need to accept the social contract is no more. .

If I lived in this constituancy, I would vote Reform to keep Burnham out. Opportunist and a complete affront to democracy for him to run for Prime Minister. Absolutely no one voted for him in the General Election.

It was the Tory gov forcing the councils into caz. Burnham issued a statement to that fact. But it suited the Tories to make everyone think it was him.

Of course it was the tories fault my bad.
Did the tories force Burnham to spend £186,000 of taxpayers money on 'under review' stickers for the signs too? Give over.

lol, I’m sure it will be the next ge in 3 years and Labour supporters will still be saying it’s the tories fault, 😂

OneTealShaker · 14/05/2026 20:42

The sitting MP and Burnham are taking the piss out of the electorate.

They are treating the constituents like pawns to be treated however they are want in their pursuit of power. These chancers don’t care about the country, they only want to line their own pockets. Watch Burnham give his minion who is giving up his seat, a knighthood as soon as he can.

The voters in this constituency need to teach Burnham a lesson by voting Reform.

Since the Tories were still blaming Labour at the last one after 14 years, it would seem fair enough

He is principled and charismatic. He will do well. For the record I don't think there should be a change of leadership.

I think he will be punished as they will not let him win the local election . If I was in that area I’d vote reform. And I hate reform. But I’d do it to keep him out and make him unemployed. And I’d encourage everyone I know to do the same.

Don’t know the area at all do you?

It’s really not far off Leigh, in fact parts of it were carved out of Leigh constituency. Andy Burnham was MP for Leigh before being elected as Mayor. This is practically his home turf.

I don’t know how locals will react but personally I think he’s the best to replace Starmer. And he did not start this process. Streeting did.

Personally I cannot stand Streeting, the smarmy got looks like he’d sell his own grandmother and then look all innocent about it. He’ll say whatever he’s paid to say.

We know Burnham. He’s practiced and actually knows what real people have been going through for years. I feel an alien bit of , something that used I think to be called ‘hope’.

Principled? Ditching his promise to Manchester because he’s got an eye to his own advancement?

@Littleorangeonaplate Everywhere is nice if you have money. Manchester isn’t the national economy though. It’s not dealing with the fallout from
the Iran war or Brexit, our soaring government loan interest costs, the tax burden on business and individuals, the lack of jobs for young people, rising unemployment, immigration, the nhs, out of control spending on benefits and the feeling that people actually working are being rinsed so others do very little. Burnham has never done anything in recent times about any of this but he’ll rinse us of money because he’s going to spend, spend, spend.

tttigress · 14/05/2026 20:50

Would be hilarious if Burnham lost!

Seems like an odd seat to go for. Not a massive majority from Reform in the 2024 election when Labour were popular. So what damage will 2 years of a Labour government do?

Plus from a practical point of view if he wins he is likely to become PM, so you basically wouldn't have an MP.

Streeting is literally nothing to do with whether Burnham stands.

asillysausage · 14/05/2026 20:52

As a constituent I am extremely pissed off with Andy’s arrogance. I will not be voting for him. I will hold my nose and vote Reform. Would love to vote Tory, but they don’t stand a chance here

Dexternight · 14/05/2026 20:57

I never voted labour but Burnham is the only one who will bring stability and fairness back.
I'm sick of how Farage has made a mockery of the electorate. Badenoch is no better.
The country needs stability and to show respect to one another.
We need to stop the nastiness.

Ilovemsrachel · 14/05/2026 20:59

Well, I think he’s quite fit. Would bang! And that counts for a lot.

How on earth is it stable and fair to the people of makerfield to use them as a stepping stone for no 10 and have no intention of being their mp. He will be focused on being pm. What’s not nasty about that.

Can I ask a) why you think Starmer isn’t stable (current agitating aside) or fair and b) why you think Burnham would bring stability and fairness where nobody else could? I don’t understand

Bollocks.
Andy Burnham lives in the area, his kids go to school there.
Manchester has become a better place to live since he has become mayor and it was the first area to come under devolution.
He has improved economic growth, transport, employment, education, probation and homelessness.

I appreciate it’s not on the scale of running the country but 10 years of doing it has given him a better grounding than any other candidate.

His advocacy for Hillsborough victims and their families also holds him in good stead.

Reform aré dangerous and will depend on the amount of money and dodgy tactics they employ.

MaidOfSteel · 14/05/2026 21:13

I think whoever the leader turns out to be, they will face the same problem Starmer has.

He’s been hamstrung by his own majority. Many Labour MPs in this Parliament seem to be very left wing, so they’ll vote down measures designed to save money, eg cutting benefits.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 14/05/2026 21:16

I'm not a fan of Labour but I think he's doing an ok job, for Labour.
