Do you know what, if I was her, I would have 100% helped my children out.

But I would have been honest about it for gods sake. Did she really think people would buy it? How many scripts are sent to agents each day and we are supposed to belive that her son is so incredibly talented that his, out of hundreds that week was picked up?

Pull the other one Kate.

You can't possibly be saying that being the son of one of the country's most famous actresses AND one of the country's most famous directors might just offer him an advantage?

Surely not?

SwedishEdith · 04/05/2026 17:32

Stephen Graham is proper Kirkby.

BleedinglyObvious · 04/05/2026 17:32

@MrsEmmelinePankhurst They may have got them on their merit but I find it hard to believe that nobody made the connection.

Wouldn't you help your kid find work?

I get Tom Hardy and Tom Cullen mixed up. They're nothing like each other.

kerstina · 04/05/2026 17:33

Even Ben Fogle had an actress mother. He deserves his success though. Worked very hard but it just gives them an easy break doesn’t it .

Of course not. He’s just very talented young man and his script would have definitely been picked up and commissioned if he’d been working in Lidl in Bradford with a teacher for a mum.

Bellasmellsofwee · 04/05/2026 17:03

Wow. Baffling how she got her big break then 😳🤣

I’m not denying that but stating that she is his stepdaughter is factually incorrect. HTH

I fucking hate it when they pretend to be working class, like it’s some sort of a badge of honour, instead of an absolute ballache that holds you back in life.

Yeah, Lilly Allen, is the most cringy at playing wc 😂

HazRab · 04/05/2026 17:40

Sabrina Carpenters aunt is Bart Simpson

Oh she can get in the bin with that!

Little miss “I put my song on my space and look what happened, I’m just a working class girl!” Ffs.

Keith Allen dad, Alison Owen mum and Harry Enfield as a step father. Yes darling, properly from the gutters.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/05/2026 17:42

There's another one.

Keith Allen - actor, The Comic Strip
Alison Owen - film producer, his first wife
Their children:
Son - Alfie Allen, Game of Thrones
Daughter - Lily Allen

The top teir of the acting world (particularly in America) is pretty much a closed shop. It goes along with inherited wealth. Like their version of the aristocracy.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 04/05/2026 17:52

But even without the definite leg up having a family member doing the job would be an advantage how to go about things.
I am sure most would be medics have the family member who would get contacts for the work experience and similar for the legal professionals.
Plus there may be some genetic/environmental factors growing up in an acting/medical/political family picking up on discussions around the kitchen table.
Although in many cases I am sure it is mummy/daddy/uncle etc putting in a word or having the surname of someone famous

They are all connected, all of them.

Yep

CliantheLang · 04/05/2026 18:11

I only learned upon her death that Olivia Newton-John was the granddaughter of Max Born. He was a famous Nobel prize-winning physicist and one of the giants of quantum mechanics.

I had always thought she made it on talent, alone.

Ahh yes, celebrity gobshite, Laurence Fox! I’d forgotten about him. Mind you, he peaked as Morse’s sidekick Lewis’ sidekick 😂

Laurence fox sister is married to Richard ayoade and appears in the ‘gay! The musical’ episode of it crowd 😄

The biggest shock I had was finding out that James and Emily Blunt WEREN'T brother and sister - similar ages, both talented, both good looking and posh.

Then found out his name is Blount

I dont know if the Who Do You Think You Are episodes are still available but Courtney Cox and Josh Widdicome are both descended from English royalty. Now there's connections. I dont think it helped them get their jobs though 😂

Most people who are mostly English are descended from Edward III. I suppose the difference is which of us can prove it.

The drummer in a band I like worked as an Asda delivery driver during lockdown.

Did the band’s name begin with D?

I’m nearly 50.

so some of that was still around. But I still had to leave school and work to keep a roof over my head, I was alone in the world.

Not everyone could make use of grants or just stay on the dole.

I'm the same age as you. I also had the privilege of free higher education. I don't think it's anything like being a Hollywood movie star. We're talking of a whole different world.

lobeydosser · 04/05/2026 18:28

Such an incestuous industry.

I never knew until this thread that the Gyllenhaals' ancestors were WASPS or that Oliver Reed's uncle was the director of the Third Man and grandson of Sir Herbert Beerbohm-Tree.

Don't think this one has been mentioned yet. I think of it every time I catch a bit of Porridge. Kate Beckinsale's father was Richard Beckinsale who played young Godber in that. Her mother Judy Loe was also on telly a lot over the years.

Another one is Tom Burke who plays Strike. His mother is Anna Calder Marshall. They appeared together in Troubled Blood. His godfather was Alan Rickman.

This is why it's possible to waste hours on IMDB!
