Tippi Hedren is Dakota Johnson’s Grandmother.

Jennifer Aniston's godfather was Kojak, aka Telly Savalas.

That makes sense as they were both known for their unique, trend setting hairstyles.

Bellasmellsofwee · 04/05/2026 17:06

The grunge rabbit hole is a very interesting one to go down as well.

Especially Courtney love and Fave Ghrol family connections to government/CIA, Geffen records all being connected.

I am very happy to say I’ve been out of the game too long to know for certain about Richard Osman (I worked mostly with Americans and stopped ghostwriting in 2010), so I try to just enjoy his books. But judging by his public personality and the fact he’s been willing to appear on Taskmaster to support friends with almost no notice (because he lived near the filming location), I would say there’s a high chance that he was at least involved with his books, considering the fact that it would look pretty shite if someone who graduated from Warden Park School and then Cambridge wasn’t able to write a cozy mystery with just some heavy editorial support; he should have the chops and he’s talked about being a fan of classic written mysteries like Agatha Christie.

The best way to tell a celebrity didn’t write the book is to judge by what they normally do. Have they ever talked about books and reading, ever expressed any passion for the subject matter, have referenced writing a memoir for years before they actually do it, or are they just claiming the idea hit them like a lightning bolt? 🙄 Celebrity memoirs are almost always cash grabs, unless the celebrity was already a writer OR they really want to share something publicly, often before press manages to share it without their permission, and a full memoir is the best vehicle. There have been one or two female celebrities I know for certain who were very passionate about and involved with their memoirs though, and were willing to put in the collaborative hours necessary to get a good product, even if they didn’t have the writing ability.

Oh, the only English one I did hear about and I wasn’t directly involved, but rumour was that Danny Dyer DOES write most of the material in his books, but his “editor’s assistant” who had to compile it into non-random order of anecdotes and clean up the bluest parts was signed off for a short time for stress. That could absolutely be horseshit though (sounds like a story he’d tell about himself!!! The fact he hasn’t is what makes me think it might be BS); I wasn’t even in the UK at the time I heard that, and some “proper” male authors tend to be pretty judgmental and exceedingly bitchy over those they consider less capable. Interesting industry, but just like most others, a fuckload of toxicity and gossip.

Re: Danny Dyer, it was the same when he "wrote" a column for Zoo magazine. I know someone who worked there and he said DD would ring up, spew a load of ex-rated anecdotes down the phone, then a poor junior staffer would have to try to cobble it into a printable column.

That’s the same with a few celebrities.

A friend of mine worked for (I think) New or maybe it was Closer, when Kerry Katona “wrote” one for them. Did she fuck!

Moving away from acting a bit, but would Stella McCartney have managed to persuade Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell AND Yasmin Le Bon to walk in her graduation fashion show at Central St. Martin's had she been the daughter of a teacher or accountant?

All credit to her for putting in the hard work, and clearly people won't buy her clothes just because of her family connections. But let's not pretend they weren't a massive help to her career.

But you know about James Fox, Edward Fox and Robert Fox, right?

Her mum is an actor too. Plus the Fox dynasty goes back further in history - see her Who Do You Think You Are

A bit like Tom Hardy. He often plays 'hard man' roles but came from an arty background and was privately educated.

Vincent Cassel is a French equivalent. He made his name playing 'lower class' characters but he came from a very wealthy Parisian background, the son of a very famous French actor.

Another one that surprised me is Guy Ritchie - his mother is Lady somebody, and he went to private school.
I always thought he was working class because of his movies, but definitely not!

Happypotter77 · 04/05/2026 17:13

Louis Theroux is the son of the great American travel writer Paul Theroux.
Louis is also cousin to actor Justin Theroux, who was previously married to Jennifer Aniston.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/05/2026 17:14

Colin Firth went to comprehensive school and had no actors in his family (until his younger brother Jonathan followed him into the biz). His family were not working class though and, honestly, it is increasingly rare to find non-private school educated actors. In the UK certainly.

I fucking hate it when they pretend to be working class, like it’s some sort of a badge of honour, instead of an absolute ballache that holds you back in life.

AllaMova · 04/05/2026 17:14

The late (and great) Tallulah Bankhead’s father was a very prominent politician, he became the speaker of the House of Representatives.

Most definitely not!

I think his posh background was a major part of why Madonna married him. Quite a few Americans are fascinated by the English upper classes. Remember that cringey faux posh accent she affected during their marriage?

DareDevil223 · 04/05/2026 17:16

I was amazed that Emilia Jones who was totally brilliant in Task, was not only not American but was Aled Jones' daughter. It was a great series and she was the stand out actor in it.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/05/2026 17:17

I know for 100% certain that Charlie Higson wrote his own books - to pp who asked.

Kate Winslett has been in the media recently for denying helping her own kids get acting / scriptwriting jobs and claiming that they got them all on their own merits with nobody in the industry having a clue that she was their mum 🤣🤣🤣

Kate Hudson has two actor brothers- Oliver Hudson(Rules of Engagement) and Wyatt Russell who has recently been in Monarch alongside his dad!

Oh wow- I did not know Oliver Hudson was Kate’s brother!!!!!!

Mariska Hargitay, Detective Benson in Law and Order SVU, is the daughter of the English 'Blonde Bombshell' Jayne Mansfield.
Her dad was a baseball player.

Oh my goodness!

I didn’t know that.

Louis Theroux also attended Westminster School, a very elite public school.

Do you know what, if I was her, I would have 100% helped my children out.

But I would have been honest about it for gods sake. Did she really think people would buy it? How many scripts are sent to agents each day and we are supposed to belive that her son is so incredibly talented that his, out of hundreds that week was picked up?

Pull the other one Kate.

Next to none, I'd have thought. No showbiz connections in their background as far as I know. Their parents split up when they were young and their mother brought them up alone thereafter, on a teacher's salary. Not really a good example for this thread. Two bright and motivated brothers who have each succeeded in their different fields.

Someone mentioned ghostwriters, can’t be bothered to find the post. But I’d be astonished if Richard did and also Graham definitely doesn’t.
