As far as I know - Tom, Leo, Brad, Judi, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Jodie Comer - no contacts / family in the business but all fantastic.

I don't think Brad Pitt has any family in the business, but he also started a long time ago, when it may have been easier to break through. A lot of his ex's do, however. And at least a couple of his kids are actors / dancers.

Brad Pitt is blessed with exceptional good looks and is a talented actor (in spite of his troubled personal life). Keanu Reeves also fits that mould. I think looks count for a hell of a lot, particularly if you have aspirations to be a leading man or woman. The vast majority of nepo babies are not as pretty as their parents, the notable exception being Kaia Gerber who can give her mum, Cindy Crawford, a run for her money. Most modeling nepos would never in a million years have got modeling work were it not for their parents.

A hill that I will die on is that Lillia Turner (lily in eastenders) is Stacey's real life sister - it doesnt matter but just irks me that theyre not open about it 😄

They aren’t sisters

I'm the same age as you. I also had the privilege of free higher education. I don't think it's anything like being a Hollywood movie star. We're talking of a whole different world.

I don’t mean that. I was a writer/comedian for years. But I got nowhere as I was always blocked as I wasn’t part of any of the cliques. “What I were you at?” Was always the first question.

Although not mega famous, Rupert Graves has managed to carve out a prolific acting career without any prior connections that I'm aware of. It probably helps that he's likely very easy to work with and get along with.

Also rather easy on the eye...Smile

The drummer in a band I like worked as an Asda delivery driver during lockdown.

Did he come to your house? Could you say which band?

There's no shame in musicians/performers doing normal jobs.

All the musicians and actors I know have day/casual jobs.

Except this one older guy who's a concert pianist but he's the exception that proves the rule I reckon.

So yeah I doubt the guy from Suede got his brother into telly. He was probably doing Asda or call centre work.

Me too.

Darlinghag · 04/05/2026 18:48

The one that always gets me is Big Mo from Eastenders being sister to Gary Oldman!

Northermcharn · 04/05/2026 18:50

Cary Grant and Marylin Monroe - the original and the best. And not a contact between them.

A bit like Tom Hardy. He often plays 'hard man' roles but came from an arty background and was privately educated.

Vincent Cassel is a French equivalent. He made his name playing 'lower class' characters but he came from a very wealthy Parisian background, the son of a very famous French actor.

Colin farrels dad was a minor footballers. The accent isnt fake he isnt posh but his parents wanted him to have the best chance wanted him to play footie. He comes working class family who done work to make sure there kids done good.

RamsaySnowsSausage · 04/05/2026 18:53

Caleb in Emmerdale and recently(ish)-deceased Paul in Corrie are brothers. Rhona and Cain on Emmerdale are married in real life.

On the nepo-front, I can't wait to open doors for my son in Local Government admin and start a dynasty!

I... didnt 🙈

Wow

And didnt know that Natasha Richsrdson (may she rest) was a daughter of Vanessa Redgrave of the Redgrave dynasty!

And she was married to Liam Neeson and her sister is Jolie Richardson. Was surprised when I found out Sue Jenkins son is Richard Fleeshman and Sally off Corrie is Phoebe Dynevor’s mum. also that Emily Blunt’s sister is married to Stanley Tucci

No, he didn't come to my house! 😅 I just remember him mentioning it on SM at the time. His drumkit was locked in a warehouse or garage somewhere that he couldn't travel to with the lockdown rules, so in the absence of being able to play or practise he made himself useful elsewhere. They were strange times.

Absolutely agree that many musicians having day jobs is completely normal and to be expected - it's only the minority who make enough money to live off day to day.

I dont know if the Who Do You Think You Are episodes are still available but Courtney Cox and Josh Widdicome are both descended from English royalty. Now there's connections. I dont think it helped them get their jobs though 😂

And Danny Dyed and Alexander Armstrong I think?

Even Ben Fogle had an actress mother. He deserves his success though. Worked very hard but it just gives them an easy break doesn’t it .

Julia Foster in half a sixpence

AImportantMermaid · 04/05/2026 19:12

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that many kids go into the same occupation as their parents. It’s similar in many professions and trades. They see family members doing it, hear it being talked about over the dinner table, can easily get advice about how to get into the industry, and yes, have access to contacts who can ease their pathway into the roles.

It’s one of the reasons it’s so important that kids (particularly kids who wouldn’t otherwise get the opportunity) get access to the people who can help them into career roles through, for example, supporting school open days, mentoring, work experience, placements, etc. If you get the opportunity to do this - please consider it.

Northermcharn · 04/05/2026 19:18

Blake Lively - dad was a director and actor
Gwyneth Paltrow - mum and dad actors / contacts

Most people who are mostly English are descended from Edward III. I suppose the difference is which of us can prove it.

This is true. I believe the figures are that 98/99% of the English, or anyone with English lineage somewhere, is descended from Edward III.They found out Barack Obama isn't, but is from Edward I by another line.

It can take genealogists to find the 'gateway ancestor' that connects to the Plantagenets, but really, it's pretty much most of us.

Had no idea

Her playing The Maid was a bloody good call, it made me see her as someone who worked her way up 😄

There’s a lot of this in football too, sons following in their father’s footsteps. Siblings too.
